What's up TeamLiquid guess what?

Well, what a damned-funny yet cocky-ass bastard of a friend – or should I rather say ‘colleague’ – do I currently have to deal with mates I tell you. However, he doesn't have the skills to back up his trash-talk; not even close.

Him: “I am unbeatable in games!”

He challenged me to a StarCraft duel when he found out I played the game. However, he didn't know I formed part of a community of highly competitive players, in fact, he didn't even know there was one to begin with; he just sat there thinking the game had long died a decade ago and that for some reason he had all of the knowledge and skill necessary to put me to public shame in a one-versus-one.

Hell fucking no.

So I just trolled along with him pretending to be a casual player who's tried the game 2 or 3 times at most, just like him, while the funny thought of me having once reached low C on ICCup danced at the back of my head undisturbed. *Girly laugh*

Well the game turned out to be a rape followed by a rage and a rematch but this time he chose for it to take place in the no-less-than-famous AoE1 stating that his “Axemen rush would own my ass sorry.” I lol’ed; he doesn’t even know how to play it either.

”Axemen rush rofl lololol”

On the other hand: like what the hell! I don’t even know how to click that shit AoE1? Ffs!

---

So I hijacked my garage, found the CD and installed it. Now I’m just sitting here staring at three jackasses standing around a useless building with a bit of wood and food in the hole.

Note: We’ll be playing our match with standard settings; no BGH shit. Also I play Romans for demotivational purposes, and we’re playing Rise of Rome (Expansion).

I started a practice game against a computer.

The drive to split my workers as fast as possible and get this thing going flawlessly made me cringe and pain when I had no freaking idea on what to do with those villagers. I immediately realized that it is a really retarded idea to send out a villager to scout for my opponent for the fact that they have a 0.001 matrix sight, move slower than a reaver and have worse path-finding than a dragoon. So I kept the little pricks in base foraging nearby bushes.

Lesson 1: Do not scout with villagers.

The hell you guys went??

Immediately after making 1 or 2 more villagers from the town center I found myself supply capped.

Lesson 2: Make your first house asap.

I’ve annoyed Aldaris

I kept on making villagers, foraging those bushes, and cutting a bit of wood here and there, eventually building a storage pit nearby a dense wood supply and a granary nearby those darned bushes, keeping house building on time to avoid those pesky supply caps too.

After making a handful of villagers I start saving up to go up the tech tree into the tool age as fast as possible (can’t do jack shit in stone age). Then my system crashed; my foraging villagers were now standing there staring at each other. What the hell am I supposed to do now to get food?

Lesson 3: Foraging bushes don’t have 1500 food each.

I found that hunting was a waste of time because gazelles move faster than a speed vulture and travel half the map away when you get near them to a radius of 15 miles. Not to mention once you kill them they start decomposing faster than flash powder in the center of the sun.

Lesson 4: Don’t hunt.

Elephant: “fffuuu”

So I just sat there chilling with the former foragers thinking, trying to find a new way to get food. Well, moments after that I saw that What? My BUILDINGS evolved! I immediately built a market and found I could make farms and that they only cost wood.

So I developed a new strategy and I want you guys to criticize and shred it apart.

Upon game start: BUILD ORDER
  1. Queue 2 villagers, take one to build a house and the other two to look for the critical bushes.
  2. Upon finding the bushes build a granary next to them and keep making villagers until you have a total of 6.
  3. Start saving up to 500 food and start evolving to the tool age.
  4. Take a handful of the foraging villagers and make them lumberjack around, resuming villager (and house) production, eventually getting a storage pit in between a dense forest.
  5. Once you reach the tool age immediately make a market, start building lots of farms and lumberjacking reaps of wood with insane amounts of villagers.
  6. Make a stable and 6 barracks scout with a scout to find your opponent while teching up to and amassing axemen.
  7. Upgrade attack and footmen armor.
  8. Beat the shit out of him.

My plan goes up this far and I have a feeling that is a total piece of trash but that can get the job done; If he manages to survive that or my attacks aren’t working as I expected them to, I will throw down 4 archery ranges or so and start making bowmen and a handful of axemen while making more farms and aiming to tech up to the bronze age.

Alright guys I will keep on fooling around trying to find out better ways to execute this thing. Give me pointers oh experienced AoE1 players! Help me show this guy people can learn and to flatten down his fucking gaming ego ffs.

Ah, I remember this game! I loved AOE2 when I was young, but I played it before I got into competitive gaming with Brood War.

If AOE 1 is anything like AOE2, then it's important to rush him once you get into the second age. In AOE2 this is called the Flush, short for Feudal Rush. It appears that you already have developed a similar strategy.

I would suggest going to http://aoe.heavengames.com/ and check out some of the strategies there. However, you should let your friend know the same site, so that not only would it be a more interesting match, but whoever wins will surely be more skilled (which you probably are, seeing as how competitive Brood War requires a considerably higher APM than a noncompetitive average RTS gamer)

More specifically, here's a strategy guide for the Romans on the Age of Empires Heaven website: http://aoe.heavengames.com/academy/strategy/articles/CivSpecific/breydel_roman_guide.shtml

Good luck!

I haven't played AoE in a long time but I think you definitely want way more villagers than 6 when you tech up to a different age; something like 20 (the risk of rush is pretty small you won't need to tech out of the first age extremely fast).

Oh man, <3 AOE1. All I remember about the metagame is that heavy catapults are completely imba. I don't think they do friendly fire and there is no counter to a maxed heavy catapult army. The Babylonians get some advantage to catapults so I recall them being awesome in this regard. I think the Choson(?) only cost 35 food per villager - that might be worth exploiting.

The game puts such a high cost on tech though that you really can't expect much unit diversity.

I don't think building walls is a viable defense, there's just too much territory to cover.

I can barely remember the game, but wasn't the hard counter to like scatter your villagers, fast tech bronze and rush chariot archers?

I seem to remember that being the best play cause they couldn't find your base fast enough and your bronze units would just rape axemen.

AOE2 is the way to go

1 is just bad
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Oh man AOE1, I played it back in the day on KALI. The 2 best strats were yamato cavalry rush and assyrian chariot archers. The basic idea was to use yamato with cheap cavalry and rush to bronze age. Then you get cavalry and kill their villagers. Yes you want a lot of villagers (20? Been a long time) and no military units until you can get cavalry. You probably want to practice how to get food faster, building granaries along the berry patches and gathering pits near animals you killed.

If he gets hoplites (which are good vs cavalry) just ignore them and kill villagers as you can outrun them.

Didn't people work out that fishing was more efficient in the end? Or was it foraging? I remember there was a big revolution when someone realized one of those was faster.

OP, check both ^^

I believe AOE1 and AOE2 were broken because rushes were too strong. The inablilty to protect workers made it hard for a good player that doesn't rush to survive early.

As for the long game, most defintiely get farms and wood. (farm upgrade) you will have the most wood and food and you can make crappy units but gold is scarce and that is the resource that lets you build a really legit army So a good combination with food/wood units with some that use gold and you are set!

(Market!!!!)

Horse archers also wreck the shit out of everything if you have APM.

Random browsing on that AoE site gives the impression that everyone gets fishing ships up fast

I remember there's a cheat code that gives you a car. Used to abuse that shit in single-player so much.

FLYING DUTCHMAN is also a code. Believe it makes your ships fly. Also one that starts with E=MC2 that gives you some shit.

Such a great game... The memories..
