So apparently today while I was "hugging my laptop" it came to my mind why is there a 64 under the processor sticker near the keypad. The processor is AMD Turion X2 Ultra. SO after 5 months of owning my laptop I found out that it is 64bit compatibility! So I was thinking, when windows 7 comes out and I decide to get it for my laptop, should I get the 32bit or 64bit version. All I know is that 64 handles applications better and has more room for RAM upgrades. So if anyone can please enlighten me on this discovery

heres a decent rule of thumb:

If you have more than 2 gigs of ram, you want a 64 bit version.
otherwise, you're never going to notice.

You should check to see if there are 64-bit drivers for the wireless card in your laptop first. If it's fairly new (5 months you said) you should be fine.

32 bit operating systems can only access ~3gb of RAM. Even if you have 8gb, the computer can only use 3gb without a 64 bit OS. Other than that, most software won't be effected either way to my knowledge.

Well, nowadays it is a bit rare to find laptop hardware incompatible with 64bit, so there aren't much in the ways of drawbacks that would hurt. Some software can take issues with 64bit though. Made the switch myself about a month on a new laptop for work, not having many problems.

As for windows 7, you'll be able to get it in either version if you purchased it. Though the download off microsoft store is a bit foggy to me on that part.

Yeah I think you have to use a clean install. As for Vista, im currently using 32bit version. However, I might wanna try 64bit, i dont have the discs for my laptop as they said its directly in the harddrive or something, no disks needed. Anyone knows how does that work?

Even a "clean install" keeps/transfers everything from your Program Files dir. and some other directories. You can find everything in C:\windows.old after the install.

You have one of those HP laptops with the recovery partitions? Acer's thing, if memory serves, allows you to make a copy of that recovery partition. Haven't looked too hard for HP even though most of the laptops in the family are HP heh.

I have a Windows.Old folder from upgrading from Vista to 7, is it safe to delete it to free up space (it's around 20GB)? I installed from the HP Stock Installation (my laptop is HP) to Windows 7 RC, so I'm pretty sure there is nothing important in there.

IIRC, you have to use the in-built recovery software and produce 3 DVD's for back-up.

I do think you need the 64bit discs for this kind of stuff.

You're changing the whole system architecture, and I don't think the 64bit version comes in bundle with the 32-bit one. Maybe I'm wrong...
