So on average what are the advantages for a keyboard and mouse over Controler? whats better for a controler?

I'm thinking keyboard and mouse is much better but my friend (who plays fps way more than me) is trying to tell me other wise.

the only reason anyone would do better on a controller is if the game has auto-aim/aim-assist (a la CoD or halo) or larger hitboxes than the PC version.

Keyboard and mouse allows you to do more, hence why computer requires more skill than console games...

for an FPS game It's harder to use a controller in my opinion... games like counter strike are easy enough for a six year old because point-click gl hf!

Personal preference, it's literally like whichever you used first you'll be naturally inclined to say its better. And it's spelled Controller

I have gotten use to both, but if I need to play to the best of my abilities, I'll play with mouse and keyboard.

Every FPS on consoles has some degree of autoaim. Otherwise no one would ever hit anything. The people good at those games are good at manipulating the autoaim. Hell, just read some halo forums there are plenty of articles about how to maximize damage through the use of autoaim.

its always funny when i watch my friends who dont play PC games try to play a shooter on my PC and need to turn the sensitivity way way way down (like 1/5 of my usual sensitivity).

The fact that a mouse can move very fast or very slow and that controllers' speeds are limited by their accel shows how mice are so much more functional and advantageous. Also, since you're using your wrist (or entire forearm) with the mouse, and only your thumb with the controller, control is much more evident in mice (ironically...). The only way a controller will EVER beat a mouse is if the game gave an aimbot to the controllers. Auto-aim won't help you for shit if you're playing against FPS PC players with a controller.

One more note - it isn't preference. Sure, someone may like a controller more and even play better on it. However, its inherent disadvantages to mice really do make it worse.

Edit: Another thing. With controllers you're using one hand to both move your cursors and do other actions simultaneously. Finger independence is not the easiest thing to be skilled at (piano?). On the PC side, one hand is dedicated to moving your cursor while the other hand moves and does actions. So the mouse is also more natural and easier to learn than a controller.

my 1st shooters were on consoles but after playing CS for a few years when I was like 12-14 I found it too hard to play FPSs on controllers any more. It's almost like you're not even really playing the game, its like youre playing a game about playing a game or something lol.

keyboard/mouse is much more versatile precise. Keyboard allows you to have virtually unlimited different buttons for different commands, making it easier to execute multiple commands and mouse is much more precise and easy to control. and also the finger independence thing that Everywhere mentioned 2 posts above me is also a factor

It's not just a matter of advantage, it's just so different. PC fps (kb and mouse) is like a formula 1, and controller is casual picnic bike ride.

Console fps are such an incredibly clumsy and inferior experience, but it's still possible to have fun with it online since no one there can actually play.

What is suffering the most - speed, you can't point at an enemy in an instant and start shooting at the limit of reaction time and this is so unsatisfying.

_First_ person shooters are not made to be played with controllers. Third person ones are though.

And i dont agree at all with the greater variety a keyboard can give you, sure you can chat and give commends but those are useless and a controller has more comfortable layed out buttons which are enough for the great majority of games. Although the precision of a mouse is obviously the most important difference, you can still play some console games with a mouse.

this is the reason why some console fans argue that controller > mouse & kb

when they attempt to play a FPS with mouse & kb, they play absolutely atrociously so they apply their own poor mouse & kb experience to the controller vs mouse & kb debate and believe it to be absolutely true.

its funny, after showing some actual outside input, keeps changing the subject and trying to tell me that we can't compare them until we can play keyboard/mouse on a console

but agrees keyboard mouse > controller for a pc.

sigh TT

The best way to deal with these people is to show something impressive. If you want someone to realize the difference, to start liking something you better show something impressive (my friends who refused to give a crap about MMA are now fans thx to Furious Angels highlight and some fedor's too)

this is my personal fav frag video, it's also short and pure action, no wasting time. Anyone with a half brain will realize that you can't move like that with a controller, aim like that, control recoil like that, be as fast, etc.

i dont think you understood what i meant. Think of it this way: when you are holding a controller, how many different buttons are within reach? Compare that to how many are in reach when your hand is at your normal position on the keyboard

Keyboard in underrated, lets even take fighting games, the most significant games were never on the PC other than guilty gear, but from emulators-kaillera experience i'd say keyboard is a better inputting device than arcade stick or a pad. And the reason is that you can manipulate wasd+zx with 3 fingers simultaneously for in-game movement so exceptionally fast, twitchy and diverse. Thumb+Analog stick on controller can never perform as well and Wrist+Arcade Stick is also worse for certain manipulations.

Keyboard and mouse is far far better to use for FPS.

If you want to test your theory with your friend, you can buy those wireless usb devices that allow you to use xbox controllers on your PC. Give him a game on LAN and see how dominated he gets.

Many console gamers dont realise that there are autoaims helping them aim. They just assume that they are gosu.
