you have 12-18 units that you pay for with a flat rate. most classes are 4 units and with a regular workload, 4 classes x 4 units = 16 units. what? you have 2 units left over? why do you think people take classes like weight training, ballroom dancing, archery, etc etc?

120 units to graduate; can't take more than a third of your units as p/np; required classes must be taken for a letter grade you either take decals for fun or if you can't get into one of your required classes and need a couple units to reach the minimum units required to be a full-time student

Use of calculus and matrix to calculate the effectiveness of armies etc. Although I realize they needed to show the rigorousness of the class, I find the calculations are jokes as the answers often are common sense. Uh, the Completely wrong - you obviously have no idea how to apply what you saw from that one lecture you watched. As far as math goes, we do a lot of theory. Exponential rate of mining, why scouting is effective in concrete terms (Check Sirlin's summary of Lecture 8 for an idea). While most pro-gamers have a "sense" of these things, the math is really used to bring it down to a level that anyone with the background can quantify. If anything, the math really opens you up to the strategic aspects of the game and just how deep it is. It's background, though - in a way, it's just as fundamental as learning macro/micro, and really teaches you the strategy side. It's easier to tell people "get better mechanics," but Nimue has done a great job of condensing strategy into something concrete, practical, and understandable.

The instructor is making it sound like starcraft is rocket science and attending his lectures will better your understanding of the game. It's all completely bullshit. I wonder is he here on tl.net? You can waste your time applying theories and effectiveness of scouting while your opponent owns your base. What sort of theories exist in Starcraft? His 5 bases owns my 3 bases but if I hold out long enough he will fall? What is the bullshit about effectiveness of scouting? You scout because you're not the only player on the map. You scout because you don't have map hack on. You scout because you don't want your opponent to watch the replay and realize you were map hacking. Starcraft was fun during middle school and high school. But mixing it with college is STUPID. God bless those kids for actually filling a classroom. The ONLY time he'll ever go pro is the eStro house needs a toilet cleaner and he has to be foreign. I don't think the point of the class is to teach how starcraft is played on a progamer level. The point is to use math to show that the basic intuitive ideas we have about RTS games are essentially true. The target audience for that class is definitely not your average tl.net user. I mean, think about it: If Nimue is going to jump straight into stuff like proper muta harass in ZvT, or the +1 attack timing in PvZ, who's going to actually enroll and attend the class? Only people who already know all this stuff. As I understand, this is a class that uses math to understand the basic theory behind RTS games. Also, lay off the guy. AFAIK, this is the first time something like this has been attempted. Why are you expecting so much? The Roman Empire wasn't built in a day. The Wright brothers didn't make a working plane on their first attempt. The first academic treatment of starcraft isn't going to be very polished either. If you want to see e-sports expand as much as I do, try to be more supportive of such "experimental" endeavors. I can tell you Nimue spent a lot of effort in getting this decal together.

However, totally new people, who cannot seem to grasp basic concepts of Real Time Strategy Games (I believe he used StarCraft as an example as it is arguably of the most polished RTS without glaring balance issues and which already has much prior analysis on it, such that math(which almost always assumes certain conditions) can be used to explain the rationale behind certain actions, building from simple concepts such as attacking to strategical movement and what not.) It is definitely not as magusmind stated, for people like us. We watch replays, VODs, actually PLAY the game. Its for the uninitiated.
