So I've been pretty bored lately and I've been looking for competitive PC games to play. I play almost any genre aslong as it has a ladder and is fun. Any suggestions would be awesome because I've been googling my ass off but I can't find anything. Apart from the obvious "go play BW", ofcourse.

Pretty shit blog, I know. But I'm bored to tears. T_T

counter-strike 1.6 but it doesn't have a ladder that is simple to get onto. OGL or ESL have 2v2 ladders, but it would take time to find a teammate.

ESEA is good actually, it's not a ladder but its ranked. The problem is it would take like half a year to not get tooled on all day.

Unless it was 5v5 team-based, a ladder would truly suck for 1.6

and most of the people in #findscrim are half the time hackers

but I hear that ESEA is good but you pay money

I've been liking quakelive but punkbuster keeps kicking me for no reason, ever since the latest update.

Besides:

If you've got Windows 95 on your computer, I'm sure you could fill some hours with 'Chip's Challenge'

Here are some tips:

1. Chip can't swim without flippers.
2. Watch out for monsters!
3. Chip needs boots to walk on fire.

Wow I remember playing that game, the "dut dut dut" kind of movement is so nostalgic.
It's a great game but quite frustrating and single player.

You can get over 100% accuracy if you use explosive weapons that hit more than one person per shot.

RTS: Wc3
FPS: CS 1.6 Call Of Duty.
Ladder wise in 1.6 it does have them now since ESL season 1 just started but its a 5v5 ladder. If your just looking to play a lot of pugs or scrims just buy ESEA(even though i hate there servers and it doesn't reg!) its fun

Cheers! //¯◡◡¯\\ 문채원 | 한지우 -___-

Might I add more to the Counter-Strike tally. As well as WC3, big fan of that. Similar to Starcraft, but not really. Plus it's fun and slow paced so it's not as intensive as SC.

I kinda find it sad that only 5 different games have been mentioned. They should really make more competitive games, the casual market has enough as is! Also what are the chances of getting over 100% accuracy with over 9000 shots? o.o

trackmania
quake
cs
street fighter IV
trackmania (cant play that in euro :<)

the thing is, games that actually reguire training are rare, and they aren't very popular.

Starcraft is your best bet if you want a competitive game.
Or quake.

Trackmania has a lot of players and stuff, but i dont really like it =P

SF4 is console only right? It should be available for the PS3 no?
Hmm, a fighting game for the comp would be sick. Are there any? One with a ladder would make me cream my pants.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tremulous! Its an open source stand alone mod for Quake 3. (Tremulous means "being in a state of shaking", shaking, quaking, get it? Yeah, i didn't either, at first) Anyway, its a combination fps-rts. While the game has been getting pretty low on population so far, its still very fun. Quake 3 is not required, and the system requirements are pretty low.
Download it at: http://www.tremulous.net
My ingame name on Tremulous is "Dr. Salvador" PM me if you decide to play and need any help.

Alot of you are missing the whole "ladder" thing which is a main selling point atleast for me. Some good suggestions I'll look into though! Still no game that I've seen and wanted to try immediately. Something like this Dungeon and Fighter thing the Koreans have would be sick I think. Is there any way to play it as a foreigner without a proxy (for lag reasons)? I guess everyone would just be able to talk korean anyway so it wouldn't be very fun.

I used to play a pretty sick game called Neverwinter Nights. I don't know how active the user-base is nowadays but I know back when i played they intertwined solo-play with multiplayer, and it was pretty ownage. Check it out if you want. Storyline was pretty beast too

Ugh, WoW PvP ladder. Don't even mention it. Played it at a pretty high level, but 95% of the time the outcome of the match is decided when the gates open and you see the setup of your opposing team. The other 5% of the time someone pulls out a luck-win. This is because WoW is such a simple game that noone will make mistakes that cost games (exaggerated, but it's pretty damn close to the truth.)

Oh there's a ladder for DotA (garena, the iccup of dota), but I found the game to be pretty repetitive. Sure there's a fuckload of heroes you can play but it lacks in depth.

I'll look into kar rider, It'd be pretty cool if it's anything like Mario Kart (wii version had a ladder but the matchmaking was pretty broken, GAH I'm beeing too picky.)

Play America's Army. That game is so complex... as you play and play any given map, there's always something new to learn about the correct strategy in any given situation. For example, I play on the map Bridge Crossing exclusively, and I'm always learning new tricks of how to use the map to my advantage. Give it a try. It's got a fairly steep learning curve, though.

quake and cs are easily the closest to sc in terms of competitiveness. cs is easy to get into and play competitively but quake has a much higher learning curve (1v1 ofc).

Why not starcraft? Because I'm not korean. I've tried starcraft marathons but I play a pretty layed back style so I always get myself into 1 hour macro fests and tire myself out in 3 games tops. Also, variety is good!

Then you'd hate Total Annihilation/SupCom.

It's already been mentioned but if you haven't given it a shot, try your hand at Go. It's a blast, the community is a billion times nicer than the starcraft one. Tons of people that are willing to help, and very few unsocialized kids who feel that their "skillz" are the only thing that matters in life. You'll have no trouble at all finding experienced players who are willing to go over your games with you.

It's a little harder for most people to jump into than chess because it's so open ended (unlike chess where most of the time even a very new player can find a few moves that look good), but I think it's easier to get decent at, doesn't require a lot of memorization like chess does, and the community is just outstanding.

Yes, yes, joseki is memorization, but you can be pretty dang good and not know any joseki if you have solid fundamentals and know how to read.

I've been playing qlive the past few months. It's surprisingly similar to SC. Much more smarts are required than I would thought, although map knowledge plays a larger role at low level qlive than at low level SC. It requires the same kind of mental juggling as in SC, in that you need to keep tabs on mega time, armor times, and your enemy's position. It also requires similar judgment calls, in that you need to decide whether to go for the kill, wait at a spot for the kill, or go collect the items you have timed.

Qlive is also tremendously fun to watch in first-person view. It doesn't look nearly as impressive as SC does, but I still found myself shocked the first time I loaded up a demo. Of course Quake has frag videos, which I think most would say are >>>>> SC videos.

I wouldn't say at the low level it has a comparable learning curve to SC, but it is probably more frustrating at times.

Personally, I've decided to come back to SC because you can actually listen to music in SC without suffering too much for it. I'll save Quake for when I only have 10-30 minutes to play.

You beat me to it! I was going to quote my blog about NetStorm.

NetStorm is the closest RTS I've found to Starcraft in terms of competitiveness. I've found that most Starcraft players take to the skill required to play NetStorm. There's a decent learning curve and the skill ceiling is as fast as you can be (like SC). There is a ladder but the player base isn't huge, or at least people tend to take extended breaks, so the ladder isn't nearly as large as iccup. Anyway, I'd highly suggest giving it a shot if you want another RTS.

Go for Team Fortress 2, if you want to play an FPS.

Europe has the best leagues for TF2, so it might be worth giving a shot at least once.

WoW- reasonably competetive ladder. ( about 12 iccup sized ladders for each continent). But be warned, even if you are highly skilled at this game, doesnt mean you will succed at it. Most the top players are noobish-decent. (I used to be rank one on the ladder, but dropped down because i became a much better player) Yes, that makes no sense so trust me on that one. Oh yeah one good thing is that it isnt very gear dependant at all, since everyone who is half decent has the best gear in the game. The skill cap is way lower for WoW than sc, as people dont play the arena part as much as well as the game not being as old. This is the most frustrating game you will ever play as well, Be it the nerd rage, the 30 point losses(compare that to losing 500 points on iccup over one game), or the overpowered class combos that blizzard is never able to balance properly. WoW is the first MMO to become quite competetive as well, with quite a few tournys every year i think.

Warcraft 3 - obvious choice here, like sc but warcraft.

Dawn of war - more nooby version of warcraft, which is a nooby version of starcraft. But actually quite competetive since there are alot of noobs out there. Also i think its imbalanced???

Cs 1.6 - the most competetive shooter. Is quite similar to sc in some ways, such as the bm/crappy mods/hax you will encounter. I'd assume this is quite hard at top levels since it's been around for as long as starcraft.

Guitar Hero- Quite possibly the only micro based game where you dont use a keyboard. Fun game too. 200 apm guitars zomg!

Dota- mod for warcraft 3! I guess this is quite competetive but ive never played it so i can't tell.

You could also try out other competetive Korean games such as lineage, lineage 2 and kartrider. Lineage 2 has more subscribers than WoW apparently, which is quite a feat.

I'm surprised no one mentioned GunZ. Competitiveness and tech skill demand far outstrips those of games targeted at casuals.

Here's a pretty fun video:

The guy's tag is Gosu. You can't go wrong. Honestly I never went serious with this game since sc > all, but when you start reading about high level movement skills it becomes as technical as a good fighter. The graphics aren't spectacular but that's hardly relevant.

No hate, but if your problem with sc is playing lazily, just pick it up =P Fast-paced games can invigorate where slow-paced ones make you tired.

L2 used to have more than WoW, I find it extremely difficult to believe it does now. It topped out around 2-3 million, and it's not really a competitive game. It's something you need to invest a ton of time (or money) into, and you can only do meaningful PvP once you've made connections, joined alliances, etc.

There used to be 5v5 (5x 1v1, sort of) tournaments in Korea but I think they stopped because there's very little technique in 1v1, and Koreans are carebears when it comes to PvP.

i can play with you if you want, teach you the basics etc.

I had a friend who used to be part of one of the top 3 teams in the world in GunZ and he said it became flooded with hackers so he quit.

Love this game! Not sure how competitive it is, though.

There are seven races in the latest expansion...haha. It's impossible to balance.

Also, from what I've read, Space Marines are an entirely unusable race in that game...as in...they just can't be used competitively.

They're bottem tier but scout rushes are still feasible. The imba is actually greatly exaggerated in DC. Aside from Necrons, the other races weren't too bad.

are you talking kartrider USA or chinese version? I remember playing USA beta and it was fun; then I remember it going down and the chinese version is just annoying because there's no1 to play with and no clans to join.
You can't fight the feeling.

I used to play a pretty sick game called Neverwinter Nights. I don't know how active the user-base is nowadays but I know back when i played they intertwined solo-play with multiplayer, and it was pretty ownage. Check it out if you want. Storyline was pretty beast too

NWN is only for people interested in the genre, and fantasy of course.
I used to play this game for several years as well, online that is.
Great fun!

There is 4v4 svs league is ongoing, 6v6 smallpub league is finishing is in semifinals already, hockey league just finished, trench wars leagues (3 of them: 8v8 basing, 5v5 wb, and 5v5 jav), and others that I can't think of off the top of my head. The diversity in gameplay is pretty big.

^ Subspace (a.k.a. Continuum) is a good choice that I forgot to recommend along with NetStorm. I only ever played Trench Wars competitively but it was lots of fun. Highly recommended for competitiveness.
