So at work we have this hand held scanner gun to scan UPC's And I've noticed that when you put it on the cradle (which doesn't really do anything except give it a proper resting place) the scanner goes into constant on.
Like exactly what happens when you press the trigger.
I looked at the cradle and couldn't see anywhere where it would be pressing the button. And I finagled the thing all different ways of sitting in the cradle and couldn't figure out why it would turn on when not in use.
All the cradle is, is some plastic and some metal coil that is poseable for the stand. So I figured it couldn't be some magnetic thing.
So today I finally got sick of it and took the shit apart. On the inside of the cradle on one side there is this little metal rectangle like 2mm x 1cm. It feels and looks like aluminum but I can't be sure.
Anyways it only activates the gun on the one exact spot on the bottom side of the gun. I can't for the life of me figure out why the fuck this would be there other than to maybe wear out the laser faster and cause businesses to buy more guns more often.
And I just checked, the laser is scanning when that secret metal is put into place.
I'm just checking now and I do feel an ever so slight pull from a magnetic force. Aluminum isn't magnetic though right?
Maybe it is just some malfunction that causes a circuit to bridge which inturn creates a minor electro-magnet. Weird.
I just noticed now too that after a while with the metal bit there it makes the laser about half the size and it kind of fluctuates.

I have no idea but I'd guess it's setup that way so as the scanner is resting in its cradle you can quickly swipe items across it like at a super market checkout counter.
Does that make sense?

That could be a possibility, but that doesn't really make sense for it to be on all the time.
Overall, I'm more curious about this piece of metal and what it is and how it works.

its so they can double as a checkout counter, that way you dont need to use a hand to pull the trigger to scan.

Its so that you can ring things up without having to use the gun in one hand.Really now stop smoking pot at work it leads to crazy tangents that lead you off in fun and fanciful ways much in opposition of the plain truth..or something.

magnet is so it doesn't fall out, and like others have said, it's always on so you don't have to use your hands.

No, the thing was like glued in there. It did have magnetic properties though, I picked up some staples on the carpet with it. Maybe it was aluminum with magnet inside. I brought it home maybe I'll try and crack it open.

Paintball players have been using this type of setup for a long time (it's actually kinda obsolete now), and I think I has some similarities to what you have.
We'd install a reed switch in the boards of our guns that would switch to a (illegal) full auto fire mode when a magnet was applied. The magnets needed to complete the circuit were, cleverly enough, sewn into our gloves. So when we gripped our guns the magnets would activate a fire mode that would make our rate of fire take off like a rocket ship. When the refs would check our guns for illegal modes, it would fire normal semi auto, because of course they didn't have magnets in their hands.
Your gun probably has a reed switch (or similar technology) in the handle that activates the laser when the magnet is applied. Conspiracy solved.

ooohh...I remember back when they were talking about that shit when I used to follow paintball.
Paintball became such a terrible sport as soon as it started getting big. In addition, it totally killed my wallet. I poured more than a grand into my equipment when I was in high school...every damn paycheck...T_T.

Lol yeah, guns alone can get pretty pricey. Then when you get good you have to worry about travel to national events and stuff. I'm glad I'm almost done with it.
