What is the mentality of most people here on TL? Mine is that I do the bare minimum possible to win and therefore I underestimate good opponenets and lose because of silly reasons half the time. If that same person had a C+ rank, I would try to play really really safely. As a result, I don't treat anyone the same when I play on iccup. There is never a strong, consistent level of play for me. Is this what happens with most people? Or am I just a special case

I don't know why you would do the minimum possible? I always do as much as I can and I like to focus on harass.

Well I just don't always try my best. Like sometimes I let my macro slip in low level pvz's and stuff like that

In chess they tell you "play the board, not the player". No matter if you're playing a god or a newb, you should always treat it as a test for yourself to make as little errors as possible.

I just go aggressive as possible, although I do lose because of it....

I treat D- like A+(not that i'm anywhere near that or anything) people in terms of timing and such, you never know when you would run into a smurf.

If you don't underestimate your opponents you don't make silly mistakes because of confidence.

You're better off not even taking their rank in consideration and just playing as if the person is amazing.

The way I see it; D player or A- player, all are the equal enemy at the beginning of any game.

Someone once said in Chess to "play the board, not the player."

I don't think it applies well to SC. A lot of skill in SC is based on reading your opponent, which does mean reading his skill level in the different areas of his play. You have to play differently depending who and what you're up against. Their history, the builds they know, their micro, their current mind-state, their current decision making, their influences, etc..

Iccup is like an expansion pack to SC. It adds simple new elements of play such as mind-games with "top rank?" and "where are you from?" and BMing to try and tilt the opponent. Maybe start every D ladder game with "I hope you like cheese!" It's legal, it's funny and it's genuinely effective. They'll be nervous, they'll scout early, etc..

Anyway, to answer the OP:
Against really good P's in TvP, I'll play pretty greedy sometimes, cutting corners and trying my best to gauge goon count to get earlier facts and later e-bay. I need every edge I can get so I'll play hyper aggressive. The first person to attack gains a lot of initiative and a psychological advantage. Against D/C players, I will play way more safe, play way more defensively(if I care about my record. If it's purely practice, I will play greedy a lot so I can clearly find the line between too greedy and just greedy enough), not worrying about the psychological advantage of being the aggressor because I have the confidence already to beat them. And D/C players tend to throw units away and you can just wait for that and then unsiege and a-move.

The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.

I don't really play player levels differently, but I do play matchups differently.

ZvP: I am aggressive early, and at some point I either go for broke or stop being aggressive and start macro whoring like crazy. Unfortunately once I start macro whoring it is hard for me to get back into aggression mode, which is why the longer a ZvP lasts, the more likely it seems that I will lose it.

ZvT: I have difficulty being aggressive early against Terran. Unfortunately, I simply can't get my apm high enough to handle anything past middle game armies in ZvT. Idk, I am very cautious against Terran players and I shrink away from fights that I shouldn't, inevitably letting them force fights on their terms that I am doomed to lose.

ZvZ: My best matchup, because I know about what you should have at any given time. I play super aggressive, but so does everybody else, so that isn't really surprising.

I just imagine I'm playing your mother, so I'm as abusive as I can be.

More seriously though, I generally always expect my opponent to be a B or higher smurf wanting to noob-bash, so I play my best then pat myself on the back for being a nub who did his best when I get my wallin and first two tanks destroyed by 2 goons.
