In regards to the AI, did you play vanilla or with Beyond the Sword? Because Beyond the Sword gives the AI a pretty substantial update (I think its also available as an add-in to vanilla Civ 4).

Yes, resource management is 3 > 4 > 2, but in 2 it was more understandable whereas in 4 it is a step back.
Beyond the Sword... Never played it.
