A while ago I was playing around with the idea of using optic flare against protoss to make vultures more effective.

this is the most entertaining game I played using that strategy.

don't expect high level play, but i think overall the game was fairly high paced and fun.

hmm downloading it

nice game, although you could've just kill him easily after your very successful fd rush.

in tvp doesn't make much sense researching optical flare, because for the same money you could've just gotten a fast armory, fast damage upgrade and goliaths, which can shoot off the observers.

though in tvz it can have some use, because you'll have medics anyway. in this case optical flare isn't too costly, and you can blind the slow overlords over cliffs, I find this quite useful.
And all is illuminated.

hah cool, lately i have been losing motivation to play tvp normally too, so i just decided id stop playing to win and start playing to have some fun, so every tvp i played since then has included vessels with emp, and ghosts to lockdown arbiters, i hope i get the hang of it, because its far more fun than doing my normal stuff tvp

Yeah you can make mines really strong if you blind his obs. It's a cute strat, I've seen it used before from time to time.

I made a thread about this a while ago, and I do this strategy every once in a while, it's pretty fun.

Good rep btw, very action packed.

Have a look at my version of Optical Flare TvP:

I use it mostly to cut off flanks, and take advantage of protoss' split army.

what about blinding YOUR OWN MINES so they only explode when a unit is right on top of them?

That wouldn't work on huge maps such as Python unless you put them in specific places

Besides, it would be much harder to hit anything with them unless they are 100% undetectable.

like i said, the players are newbie.

the reason for medics over goliaths is that optic flare is instant (as opposed to the 6 goliath shots it takes to kill an ob), has the same range as a range upgraded gol, cheaper than gols, not a target (you'll find that your goliaths will die in battle while your medics are the last thing standing) plus it frees up the factories for more vultures

not saying that medics are better than gols, just that for my particular build i think they can work well which i hope the replay sort of demonstrated

haha what a great idea! Freelander makes a good point, but on the other hand if the protoss sees he loses his observer he'll build another and be cautious of mines, but if he just has his observer still alive he won't expect blind and will probably walk into mines

I wonder if you could work this into a build. Yesterday I saw some guy do some weird FD build that involved an early academy and a medic to accompany the marines.
