Uh.. We've sold our souls how? By nagging blizzard half to death with MBS questions? Are you referring to the positive reports from all the live events - maybe the game is just fun?


Blizzard used to mean something for me. They represented quality. They represented late releases. They represented innovation. They represented long term support. But today, I only feel pessimism. Blizzard has not that many years ago released World of Warcraft. The MMO genre introduced subscription fees. WoW has and will still be a huge moneymaker for Blizzard. If Blizzard truely loved its community, it would ease up on the fees. Or it would at the very least make the expansions regular patches. I am not a WoW user. And I don't really care how much money it costs for people to play WoW. I just see it as a symptom that Blizzard continues to make big money off a game that was released long ago. Releasing SC2 as a trilogy is another symptom. Maybe competition in the market is behind this, but these days all I see when I think about Blizzard is a man in a business suit. We might also see BNet becoming a class divided society - Those who pay for it and those who don't.

Blizzard began working on SC2 in 2003 - that's 5 years ago. Furthermore, the only reason SC2 hasn't ALREADY pushed past at least a couple release dates is because they decided not to set one. When SC2 was first announced everyone was like "oh man, looks almost done".
People were talking about release dates ranging from early to late 2008.

Now we are talking late 2009. HMMMMMM.

And I don't know about you, but personally I want to actually play SC2 seriously, that means if they can get the game out faster by splitting the single player into 3 parts (they were doing 2 expansions anyway, which, btw, is only one more than SC) then go ahead.

Oh and Blizzard would have to be smoking some seriously fucked up stuff to ever consider dropping the fees on WoW - I'm pretty sure most MMORPGs run off fees, why should they say no to money?


Also, Starcraft 2 is being developed, not by people who created the original, but by people who designed C&C3. I find this especially hard to take in. I own C&C3. It's a technically good game. It has lots of nice features and it runs smoothly. But as a Starcraft player, I find that it is very strategically shallow. How can people who created C&C3 know anything about RTS strategy, I wonder. I get the feeling that they are also making a lot of effort into designing the metagame into the game itself. If they do that too much, the game ends up looking much the same everytime you play it, because your options are limited to strategies that are designed to be used.

Dustin Browder seems to absolutely love the game and I really cannot see how you could possibly be worried if you've seen ANY of his interviews.


Thirdly, what happens to Broodwar? The community will no doubt go to stores and buy SC2 the day it comes out. So there will be a drastic decline in users on BNet and ICCUP. Non-SC2 buyers may decide that this is the time to quit because of less available gamers to play with. And if SC2 fails to impress, we'll see SC2ers coming back to an empty community and they might quit by then too. The Broodwar community is already an aging bunch, caring more about careers, wives, children and pets as time passes. Blizzard may eventually decide to kill Broodwar on BNet too if they can sell more SC2 because of it.

So what was the point of this? I want to spread my pessimism. I want other people to be worried too. Just because it's SC2 doesn't mean it will be any better than other RTSes.

Blizzard still has battle.net up and running for:
Diablo 1, despite creating Diablo 2
Warcraft 2, despite creating WC3

Not to mention they have specifically said they will NOT discontinue their support for Brood War battle.net.

Seriously, be worried all you want, but make sure the things you are worrying about are realistic.

Teamliquid.net did create an SC2 forum. Most of the coverage from Blizzcon has been about SC2. Also previous news postings about SC2 have given the impression of some sort of arrangement between Blizzard and Teamliquid. So it feels like an endorsement to me.

Maybe you'd have preferred it if we covered mostly Diablo 3.

We could change our site name to something diablo-esque, say, liquidblood.net (fine I wanted to make some kind of reference to the whole "omg there are rainbows in diablo 3!! moar gothic!!!" but I couldn't come up with a good name after 30 seconds of thinking) while we're at it, just let us know!

Seriously tho, what else do you want us to cover ? Everyone wants to know what SC2 is like.

There is some seriously awful logic in this blog.

You've never seen the SC2 forum? People are constantly challenging blizzard's design choices and debating them.

They don't care about the community...because WoW has fees? What? All MMOs run off fees, and albeit that they're making a crazy crazy profit they still have to pay for server upkeep and what not and would be in the red with the game if they didn't charge anything. Why would they turn down money? Clearly it's an acceptable rate considering they have a few million subscribers worldwide.

People moving on to something new once a sequel comes out? This is Blizzard's fault, how? That's the very nature of a sequel my friend, and chances are if it's not good it's going to be like CS:Source and everyone is still going to play CS1.6 regardless because the game sucks in comparison

All of these points have absolutely nothing to do with SC2 as a game. Like in the slightest. What the hell, seriously

Having talked to Dustin and visited Blizzard you should feel fairly safe about what theyre doing for SC2. Firstly the teams at Blizzard work essentially independently (only coming together to playtest company wide alphas really). The WoW side has virtually nothing to do with the SC side bar bearing the same logo. The SC team is completely SC oriented and i doubt we'll see the business man show his head there.

Dustin is a great guy, seriously. Having met him all my fears about SC2 were laid to rest. Sure the game can look good and play good but the devs can't control longitivity. With that being said they are committed to making this game something amazing; and the mere fact that they have been working at this game for so long and released so much information about it and are still refining it even now (in comparison to WC3) just shows you how seriously this game is being taken.

Starcraft 2 worried me too. People will have such high expectations of what the game is going to be like once its released and it will be held in direct comparison with SC. The difference being is that SC had 8 balance patches before it was perfected, while SC2 will be looking to be balanced right off the bat in fear of being flamed to death. People forget that there was once a time where Scout/Reaver was standard, and Terrans still played bio vs Toss and Spawning Pools were only 150 minerals. The game has changed drastically since then, and if people were to play say 1.04 now they would probably be mortified at what they are seeing.

SC2 will take time to be perfected, and until then I hope the brood war community stays strong (it wont but meh). At least i hope that i can play SC2 casually and still enjoy watching SC1 in Korea, thats the scenario that im hoping comes true. All in all the longer SC2 takes the happier I am because;
a) BW gets to live that much longer
b) The chances of SC2 being that much better increase
c) The more time we all have to prepare for SC2

I'm the opposite, I want to play through the scout/reaver era of SC2, I don't want others to do it for me. I missed the first 4 years of SC and always wished I'd been there ;p

The got SC2 questions was more about if you had any gameplay questions because then i would go and specifically try it on the press sc2 comp lol. But yea, i asked dustin some questions at our lunch and holy shit they are on to it. Just don't worry about the dev team, SC2 is in the best hands it could possibly be in.

To what extent are those times something you want to relive because the game has lasted so long? Also, it is fairly reasonable to assume that the vast majority of users on TL expect the game to be as perfect as SC upon its release and that we will be able to watch it on the inet somewhere. Thus its likely we'll end up with a horde of disappointed people

And I Believe in what is happening now, SC2 is being developed like by scientists and like if they were using scientific methodology, and i believe in science...
BUT, if that oozing tumor takes over... then u got no problems, brood war pro scene wont die , forgg already said that he will play sc1 till it dies, and it will die only if sc2 become very good.
I've got a point, and i'm ready to kill or die for it.

SC2 is fun as shit, and it will get even better as a competitive game soon enough, have no fear. Seriously, when has Blizzard truly let people down with a game (aside from Starcraft:Ghost, LOL!). WoW -> HUGELY popular, SC -> #1, WC3 -> still very popular, Diablo -> HUGELY popular.

Whether it's good or not. I and most others, especially from TL, will buy it as soon as it is released. We can only hope it's a decent game.
