I'm 16 years old. My dream is either to become a progamer or somehow work with e-sports. All these interviews with artosis and tasteless and stuff really makes me sad because it sounds so much fun. Like the clip with tasteless, rekrul and lilsusie at a starcraft match when they get on camera and hide their faces, haha. I wish I was there too.

I'm so looking forward to when I turn 18. I'll take a year off or something and travel to Korea, maybe even move there and study, who knows? The worst thing is that I won't be 18 when my hero Boxer will be back in progaming again.

How did you feel about turning 18? Did you have any dreams that you was looking forward to? Damn I need to stop writing, gotta practice some SC!

Moving to a foreign country because a game you like is popular there.

Not lame at all.

I just find that logic really, really hurting. Some people go traveling and that isn't a bad idea if:

A ) You have the funds
B ) You are going to go back to school when your finished

If your just traveling then go for it, otherwise I think your just making excuses (ex. I am here to study, it just so happens to be the place where Starcraft is also most popular, Zomgz!) to hide your real reason for being there.

If I gotta study, it's a bad idea to study in the country I want? Like why would it be any difference in Sweden where I live? (maybe Korea doesn't got good universitys I don't know really, but I'll find out)

Uhm, yeah, I mean that I'm looking forward to it but it feels just so far away.

Can't imagine myself in Korea actually as I have never been outside Sweden except for Denmark which is a neighbour country.

when i was 14, i figured, I'd get to A rank PGT/ICCUP get semi-known and go to korea, play the courage tournaments and win. Now I'm 18, and I'm at best C+/B- in div. 2 of WGTCL. I'm no where near where I expected to be, and I wanted to spend my summer in Korea going to pro games, etc... I figured I needed $12k so I got 2 jobs, and started playing poker. Made up to $9k and put it into the bank.

I hope to some day go to Korea, but as a pro gamer? not anymore. I figured out I'd rather go with the flow, get a college education, and do a semester abroad in Korea or something which I still can do.

He wouldn't be moving for the game he would be moving for his dream you dumbass. Some peoples dream is go to a foreign country and pick up shit for a living, but I am sure whatever you have thought up is better than that so that person would surely adapt to your dream immediately right?

Fucking dumbass. You could at least put him down in a more articulated way which would then serve to at least give a good reason why he shouldn't go, but I doubt you can think of any. Your probably just jealous since he has a dream and knows what it is, you dream of not envying people like him anymore cause you have no clue what to do. Seriously man why bother posting such a futile attempt at deterring someone from their goal.

:O Good luck with your dreams. Don't forget to enjoy childhood, though! It's the only time in your life when it's socially acceptable to be completely dependant, while spending almost all your time on your own interests; cherish that.

How did you feel about turning 18? Did you have any dreams that you was looking forward to?

Basically the only difference was that for all the years I've been staying out of trouble, now I know that if I do get in trouble it'll be much worse. The closer you get to 18, the more you realise you don't really want to take on the responsibilities that come with adulthood, and that it's going to be awhile before you're completely independent. It's sort of like living in a limbo of semi-dependency looking toward a dim future if you don't get really lucky. My dream is to write professionally, but I might as well want to be a rock star or progamer. Natural ability is secondary to luck and fate in the world I live in.

That said, there are privileges to adulthood you'll finally get to enjoy... Watching any movie you want, drinking (well that actually stops being fun after a short while), and if you're an attractive human being, maybe marriage and some kids one day. People will probably patronize you less, but you'll feel worse when they do.

I feel like dreams don't come true until much later in life... I'm on this sort of tightrope where either the cord is gonna snap and everything's gonna go to shit, or I'm gonna pull a miracle and make it to the other side, where I won't have to be so worried constantly.

i thought it was just a period of ignorance and bliss; thus giving advice like that is completely absurd to us children.

while spending almost all your time on your own interests

as opposed to not doing that later on?

Later on, you'll have a lot less free time. Work, active citizenship, and errands will suck the life out of you to the point that it takes a very strong person to still actively pursue their hobbies instead of just wanting to go to sleep.

It doesn't hurt to try.

Experience is great, traveling around gives you a new perspective, especially if its a foreign country. However if your serious about anything involving e-sports, you have to take into consideration your own benchmark for your own ability and not disillusion yourself. People develop differently, some pick up and get incredibly good fast (Flash) or others take quite some time to break out(Much), so the variability is quite stark. Also many talented pro-gamers who I think are better than most of the 3rd-rate crap that goes on proleague never break out either cause of bad luck in the prelims or simply because there are too many of that particular race on the team to pick out with. Savior, in his prime for example, could not qualify for the OSL for a very long time even during his reign.

Even if you don't succeed, remember the journey is more important than the end, take with you whatever you gained and develop it, take expectations and dreams one day at a time. But you have to ask yourself, how much do you want it, how much are you willing to sacrifice, and that's where the line is drawn.

O and for the 18 question, it pretty much sucked for me.
Didn't get anything I wanted, lost quite a few things in the process of attempting, but I'm still a young individual with potential.

No use in lamenting on past mistakes though, makes me motivated not to fuck up anymore. I suppose other people have it worse out there, and that gives me some solace in that thought.

QuietIdiot, I don't think he necessarily means to become a progamer... I think he just wants to be involved with the industry, which is not disillusioned at all. There are plenty of work opportunities that the industry creates. The pretty logos, translations, and camera work are all realistic possibilities for anyone who isn't necessarily an S-Class human being, but just wants to be involved with the industry they love.

Yeah I must've skipped reading a sentence, simply working in the industry sounds like a fun plan, would still be hard for a foreigner though, since most of the suitability and convenience would simply be from Koreans. Maybe GSI will become big enough to encase more opportunities outside, sc2gg could be cool.

You can still work in the e-sports industry and go to school, you know. Or he can finish his studies in Korea at a super awesome university (I got rejected from Korea University, like 3rd best in the country ;_;) and then go into the e-sports industry.

I think it would be awesome to have a non-Korean commentator speaking in Korean hahaha

ye you either have to already be a wellknown progamer or have videos on youtube to show as your resume and to show you have knowledge and experience in the game. no one wants a boring amateur talking about what the players are doing. people want those sports commentators like in ESPN where they're talking about their strategies and how the players trained for their matches, and so forth.

When I turned 18, all my friend turned 21.

It made me feel empty... I'll always be the one behind )=!

Instead of going balls out to Korea, maybe consider college with study abroad programs associated with Korea.

Just as a short anecdote... I received certification as an EMT in order to see if I wanted to continue the path to a physician or lab work later in my life. What being an EMT taught me is how screwed up payment for the medical system is and as such I'm going to stick to lab work instead of stressing out whether my patients will be in debt for the rest or their lives.

It might be a good looking cake, but it could taste like shit.

Hey OP - esports here is all about who you know and what you can offer to the industry. I think before anything, you should go to school in your own country and do a semester in Korea or something. Go to the games, hang out with peope involved in esports and see how you like it. I don't recommend coming out here as a progamer - at all. Do things as you normally would do, and make Korea a nice interlude to your life - and once you get here and decide then that you love it, you can make a job of it, you can DO something ... THEN make the plunge and move.

Oh yeah and don't thnk that you're gonna get an English teaching job to hold you over. You'll need a college degree for that.

When I was about to turn 18 I couldnt wait to buy a car because my girlfriend lived about 50 km from me.

Now I am 24 and she is still my gf so the car was a good investment I´d say

EDIT: And I still play StarCraft. As you can see, when you are 18, nothing changes anymore :D or should I be sad about it?... Think I should just watch MSL now....

Thanks alot of all the answers, sad tho that this blog entry got more posts than my first blog entry about Boxer.

I want to work with E-sports, not as commentator, just doing something to help the industry and be invloved in it. That is what I want to do. Fun people like lilsusie and Idra commented. ^^

Why the hell is everyone shitting on the people telling the kid that his dreams are unrealistic? Bringing people back to Earth is good. It's a very niche market, and I'm assuming you don't speak Korean either, so that limits you further. How many white, english speaking commentators do they need? Outside of TL, how many non-kors do you think watch BW? Certainly not enough to merit more commentators...

Plus, you have to know the game inside and out, to a T. Being good looking, well-spoken and charasmatic is also a definite must (and let's face it, people have some of those qualities, but very few have all four). And you want to cover bw (I assume), a scene which will, for all intensive purposes, be dead in the competitive sense when SC2 comes out. At which point, you'd have to start at ground zero again.

I mean, go to Korea and give it a shot, but certainly don't put all your eggs in one basket. Chances are, you're gonna leave disappointed.

Looks like most people think the only way to work with E-sport is to be a commentator?

lesser_god: I know of that stuff, got friends who told me just the same thing.

But I'm looking forward to it because I want to travel to many different places!

You better start working full time as soon as possible if you want to be able to finance a trip to Korea on your own by the time you're 18. I'm assuming your parents are not going to fund this, unless you have rich parents who don't mind spoiling you?

Travel expenses, housing, food, transportation once you arrive, etc. And keep in mind when you arrive to Korea all your income will stop because you will be unemployed using your life savings to pursue your childhood dreams in a foreign country.

Just thoroughly plan ahead, don't just sit there the next two years saying, "When I turn 18 shit is goin down!" like the majority of teens your age. Because, regardless of your dreams, if you do that it's almost certain you wont do anything you set out to do.

Also, I know you probably won't like thinking about it, but start making a plan B. When you get back to the states after spending all your savings traveling Korea for a year, you will want to be able to jump back into the real world without much hassle.

Snet: My parents are pretty poor, but I have some saved money. I'll also save all money I get and work somewhere during the summers, maybe at weekends too. And of course if I need more money I'll work for a year and save money that way.

Moving to a foreign country because a game you like is popular there.

Not lame at all.

He wouldn't be moving for the game he would be moving for his dream you dumbass.

My dream is either to become a progamer or somehow work with e-sports.

If his dream is to play a game, and hes moving there to fulfill that dream, then he is moving there to play a fucking game. If the game wasn't popular there, he wouldn't move there, because then he couldn't fulfill his dream could he? Sounds like what I said was rather accurate.

at least give a good reason why he shouldn't go, but I doubt you can think of any.

Heres one:

The game is already ten years old. I don't think anyone would disagree that his chances of making it at a foreign progamer or even getting into the proscene are beyond slim. His chances plummet even more because he isn't able to do this until he is 18. I don't think there is going to be much of a Brood War proscene in two years regardless, so I am saying that this is a bad idea. It would be a waste of money and time.

Your probably just jealous since he has a dream and knows what it is, you dream of not envying people like him anymore cause you have no clue what to do.

From my post, you've gathered that I have no dream and no idea of what I am doing or where I am going in life. Your pretty fucking amazing.

Lastly, I found this hilarious:

I kinda imagined myself wasted on a club since 18 is the legal age of clubbing in Sweden. Can't really say I was dreaming about playing sc/bw in korea =[.

Anyways if it's truely something that is important for you then I wish you all the luck ;O

18 is no big deal, 20 is since you can go buy your own booze at System Bolaget

I think you should heed Lilsusies advice, I mean she is actually there right now and it's pretty sound advice.
