It's just so much better than American TV.
Series I've seen (doesn't include a lot of movies, etc) with my personal rating out of 5 for [fun/story]
- [4/3] Claymore - excessive and fun action, plot is okay but the anime original ending sucks
- [5/5] Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - incredibly awesome and possibly my overall favorite (2nd season is currently airing), so I'm not going to spoil anything
- [4/3] Cowboy Bepop - overrated IMO, the story was too episodic for my liking, and not a huge fan of the characters
- [2/5] Death Note - never watched the last 3rd, but a very suspenseful and interesting story
- [3/3] ef - a tale of memories - teen drama, based off a pair of visual novels, decent but I really wish they connected the stories
- [2/2] FLCL - call me stupid, but I don't see why people like it so much
- [4/4] Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - reminds me of Gundam Wing, series has only aired halfway
- [3/1] Mobile Suit Gundam Seed - repetitive battles, excessive use of flashbacks, most uninspired overused plot, super-emo protagonist... second half just sucked
- [-/-] Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - first anime I ever watched so I can't give an objective score, but it blew my mind when I first saw it
- [4/4] Nodame Cantabile - if you're into nice, simple, fun stories and appreciate classical music
- [5/-] Ouran High School Host Club - shoujo, but it's great comedy and quite fresh
- [3/3] Rumbling Hearts - teen drama, also based off a game, decent story
- [5/3] Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - epic action and fun, extremely disappointed by ending
- [5/5] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - by far my favorite non-action anime, and an ending that I truly liked
- [3/4] true tears - probably the best teen drama I've seen
Yes, those ratings are pretty harsh, since a) I only watch shows that are highly recommended and b) I don't finish many shows. Although, I'd be happy to debate ratings -_-;;
So anyone have any suggestions? The only show I have lined up is Monster. At this rate, I feel like I'm going to grow out of my anime phase soon.
Also, if you mention Naruto or Bleach, I will ban you from my blog.

It's usually faster than anime tbh (at least for me) - since I finish 1 volume (200 pages) in 10-15 minutes.
Then again I'm a snail reading english --;;

I really enjoyed Kenshin OVA (4parts). Juuni Kokki, Wolf's Rain and Berserk.

Noir, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, Kenshin OVA (OVA, not the series), Elfen Lied.
Also, the Ninja Scroll movie, but don't bother with the animated series.
Basilisk I hear is awesome but I've only read the manga, never seen the anime for it.
I liked Berserk's manga so much more than the anime.
Hmmm... Fate/Stay Night isn't as enjoyable unless you're familiar with the game it was adapted from (if you know the game, than the anime is a pile of awesomeness, but if you don't it seems like every cliche in the universe lumped together).
BTW... Claymore's manga was infinitely better than the anime. I liked the graphics and all for the anime, but where they diverge from the manga plot it totally breaks down.

go with trigun or the kenshin ovas

It really wasn't. I dunno if you're taking the story at face value but it's a lot better than some of the stuff out there.
Edit: Monster is a great choice.

I'm putting together a list of anime I've seen with comments, and this reminded me to keep working on it.
|
Elfen Lied (Best seriers i've seen. Be sure you dont mind alot of blood and some nudity though) Full Metal Alchemist (Little childish at times but it varies alot. All in all a good series.) Shingetutsan Tsukihime (Extremely confusing the first couple of episodes but it gets better) Hellsing (A really good vampire series with a great main character) Fate Stay Night (Cool series which can be confusing if you dont know anything about the game) Gunslinger Girls (Helping young girls staying alive by machinery and in return make them kill people)

Fair enough. That does explain your ranking of Geass (which is a great anime to watch but it doesn't have much substance). I don't go out of my way to be like OH MAN THIS ANIME IS DEEP I'M GONNA PHILOSOPHIZE ABOUT IT (like eva fans maybe) but I can appreciate it. That said, most of the anime I'm watching currently falls into the category of "I'm watching this because it has a somewhat good story, and probably guns too" except for RD Sennou Chosashitsu.

Geass maniacs were touting it as "the next eva" and how it would spur a social phenomenon etcetc.
Then it got 1.4% ratings lololololol.
|
I go for entertaining action and interesting plots, I mean I just don't think anime is a good medium for "substance". I'd read about a philosopher if I wanted "substance"
edited with my thoughts on everything

don't you find the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya rather episodic as well. maybe its just me and their jumbling up of the sequence of episodes, but i didn't particularly enjoy the show.

I watched it chronological order, so yeah, the 6-episode main story was awesome, and the rest were fun at least

It's a short 6 episodes (2 hours) of incredible own. You're overrated!
I recommend watching Kekkaishi. Soul Eater and D.Grey-Man. Kekkaishi anime has completed after 52 episodes, unsure about a season 2 return but it's good. Soul Eater is now on episode 6 and it has the slickest animation I've ever seen (think FLCL only newer and more impressive) with good humour (different that normal anime humour as well) and sickkk action. D.Grey-Man is simply the king of shonen imo and a must watch. Great story, action, character development, it has it all, watch it.

Well if you want action, 100% for sure check out Fate/Stay Night. It has some of the best action sequences ever. The fights aren't super drawn out like Naruto or Bleach either, and there's very little in the way of "I was holding back." The only times when people do hold back is when there is a risk involved with not holding back. I.e., when Saber fights Assassin the first time, she knows that using her Noble Phantasm will drain way too much mana and she cannot replace it fast enough. Even so, she almost ends up using it anyway.
Tsukihime - The anime was "okay." The manga is infinitely better. Tsukihime is by the same guys who made FSN and is also based on a videogame. The anime is a LOW QUALITY adaptation. The Tsukihime manga is one of my all time favorites, right up there with stuff like Berserk, Basilisk, Gantz, etc.
Speaking of which, Gantz is a great manga, but I know nothing about the anime. Might be good, might be bad. Character development is HUGELY important in Gantz, and anime often fails at bringing out character development very well.
Kekkaishi - Great manga. It's a shounen action kind of like Naruto and Bleach, except that it is actually good. Well, Bleahc is okay, but Naruto sucks both in manga and anime. It was only okay so long as Orochimaru remained the main villain; Akatsuki has been a gigantic overhyped joke.
Gunslinger Girls is a GREAT manga, but I haven't seen the anime.
By the way, have you seen Evangelion?
Oh, and how can I forget Darker Than Black? Fucking awesome anime. The manga for it sucks ass though (manga is an adaptation of the anime, except that anime is seinen and the manga is shoujo).

I don't watch a lot of anime... FLCL is the only one I recognize, but I have to say I loved it :\. You can't really take the story too seriously. I don't think the writers did either, it was just so wacky. I love the quirkyness though, and there were some really great scenes, and the animation was superb.

The only animes i watch these days are the 24-episoders (forgot the japanese word for it). a) because the drawings dont suddenly suck shit (naruto / bleach) b) No fillers killing the story (naruto / bleach)
These three i liked the most: Black Lagoon Paradise action non stop, great animations, just a cool setup in general (the endpart is a bit off)
Darker Than Black Interesting setup, some really nice backgrounds and not too overboard. The huge wall is the object of interest, after that is get's a bit confusing.
Trigun I like the setup, i like him as a hero and i like the endpart.
Movie Tip The one anime i watch since nearly 20 years now at least 3 times a year and still loving it to the bones.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind This is in my eyes Hayao Miyazaki greatest masterpiece he ever made. The maintopic is as usual the enviroment but it's wraped and packed in a story, time and setup so full of great japanese fantasy that i made everyone of my friends watch it at some point. But make shure you watch the real (uncut) original japanese version. When Miyazaki gave the film to americans they cut 23 minutes out and made shure to kill the whole story of the movie. Even tough the anime does not go into that level of detail like the manga it's the one movie you have to watch.

A good one to add to that list would be Kaze No Stigma.

Bleach has pretty good animation and pretty decent drawings. The problem with Bleach is that it's just DBZ with swords.
I'm surprised I was the only one to suggest the Ninja Scroll movie. Maybe because it's too adult? o.0 But people did like Berserk. Lots of blood and rape.

rouroni kenshin, OVA's are probably the BEST OVA's ive seen for an anime... it is actually better than the original series.
claymore: read the manga
ouran high school hostclub, meloncholy of haruhi suzumiya, lucky star are all good.
