Does anyone live in Chicago area? I don't want to get into the details, unless someone here lives there. Something, something, job offer. Something something, peasant. Something something, need a place to stay.

Okay, so I've been looking around on various websites for apartments since I have to be there in less than a month to start my new job. As with most large cities, CoL is insane so I have to find something accommodating until I can actually afford to get an apartment. I have one artist friend who lives in the city proper, but then the commute to work is an hour by train. That seems to be the way I'll have to take all things considered.

The firm is in Palatine but just looking, everything is expensive for now. In a month or two, I'd be able to afford to get my own place. Right now, as it stands, I may just have to hotel it for a paycheck or two and then see what happens.

Anyone ever do something like this when relocating? I'd probably only take my vitals with me, and make another trip to get everything else once I find a place, unless I get really lucky. If anyone has any help or information, would really appreciate it.

During 4+ years at a co-op university I moved every 4 months. My primary storage and mobility tool was the "Plastic Milk Crate".

Are milk crates a common thing where you are? i just ripped them off of various variety/convenience stores over the years when i was a teenager. By the time i was 18 and started moving every four months i built up a supply of ~15 milk crates. During the closing hours of a variety/convenience store say from 12 to 6 you see several empty plastic milk crates outside. I just helped myself.

Any how, the Milk Crate is a sturdy storage tool that can then be reassembled into various furniture pieces you might not have. I used milk crates to hold up my monitor. 2 milk crates stacked on top of one another functioned as the night stand beside my bed. Turn a milk crate sideways and its a bookshelf for books and games. The small holes allow you to put wires through them for the power chords on any electronic items.

I don't live in the city, I live in the suburbs but I help with with any questions you have. One suggestion I can make is if possible try to avoid living in either the city itself, Cook, or DuPage counties due to higher cost of living. However commute times may not make that an option.

The firm I'll be working for is in palatine and the apartments I'm looking at are around Mt Prospect. I have one good lead and a few others pending. I'm just trying to get a sense of costs and things like that. 3 weeks isn't a lot of time but I can make it happen.
