One thing that I've always loved about BW as a game is that individual skills matter. If two equal skilled opponents face each other, every game can be quite chaotic, unpredictable and downright exhilarating to play. This is especially prevalent in games where both you and your opponent are giving it your all. Once your focus climaxes, you feel like you have overcome any and all limitations.

You develop your own rhythm and roll with it as you constantly juggle different thoughts:
I gotta keep up the aggression!
I have to take another exp!
I should attempt to drop his main or contain him!
I need to keep making units!
and much more...

Though the constant macro and relentless aggression among other things are a huge drain on your limited APM, you realize that it's a rather enjoyable experience. It feels like you are at peace with yourself and even if your best efforts lead to your defeat, you are more than willing to accept it. Anyone who's gotten into the zone after playing with focused intent would understand this feeling.

Another thing I've always enjoyed greatly is the fact that each game is a brand new game. It really does not matter what just happened in the game played mere moments ago. It can look like you have someone's number in one game and look like a chobo against them in the next. Everyone has their ups and downs and even on your best day, your opponent might just be that tiny bit better. Moving forward, I feel like the following two games sum up my feelings perfectly. Both games were played on Tau Cross back to back against the same opponent. Results were widely different. For those who don't want to watch both games (I highly recommend the second), I have linked some good portions for your viewing pleasures:

a) oops
b) first big attack
c) might want to reconsider
d) I'll take it!
e) didn't see that coming

a) marine vs muta micro bit
b) thanks
c) worth a try
d) ...
e) Irradiated tanks, go figure
f) and onwards till the end...

Enjoy!

wp, your macro was better than ever before (200 minerals at 23 minutes) and the difference is evident.

for anyone who's watching, I was really rusty andin game one and I forgot to upgrade consume (I could've sworn that I clicked the defiler mound and pressed c), which I had only realised after making my defilers and wondering why the hell wasn't consume done yet, which would explain why my swarms were late and my defilers were just hanging around.

BigFan's has improved a lot.

One suggestion I have in the presentation of the video is to make it fit to screen, ie remove the empty black space.

The anti death ball way Brood war worked is so cool. It's still a macro game, but winning with micro, and smaller groups of units in smaller engagements is still critical.

Yes, examples like the bio vs lurker, bio vs muta, terran ball vs dark swarm are micro scenarios where the advantage is given to the person who controlled it better.

Given the same scenario, the terran could completely crush the zerg, the zerg could completely crush the terran, or they could come out even. It all depends on the execution.

And execution is something that we improve on over time. We could never have pulled off so many things we did in this game 1 year ago, and watching our improvement is extremely satisfying.

I've noticed, been reading BigFan's blogs over the months, his macro alone has gotten noticeably better

yes, BW is extremely fun in that regard. Engagements, regardless of size, are all important and can really swing the game back and forth so even a weaker macro player can win a stronger macro player if he microes better during engagements. Of course, if the difference in macro is that big, micro still can't save you lol but you know what I mean.

pretty much. Micro is amazingly fun in BW but you need to make sure you don't loose track of macro either.

Funny enough, we are both pretty casual and don't practice outside our various matches here and there, yet we have seen major improvements this past year. Watching improvements is extremely satisfying as JieXian mentioned. Of course, we also have our off-days but overall, more games than not are around the same level (or close to) the game above. Also, thanks for reading my blogs ^^

Nothing... NOTHING gave me more rewarding feeling in BW than winning a hard fought TvZ.
Those games where it goes beyond 25ish minutes with 4~5+ expansions for both sides... those games really gave you chills after it's done.

Also, it's been a while since I played/watched BW.
Gosh those sound of scvs mining mineral... music to my ear.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Yes, you just sit there and wonder what just happened after you manage to win a game that long. Really exciting.

I think BW sounds are quite therapeutic to ex- and current players lol

Please, don't do this to me.
For the last month I've been thinking of installing SC:BW again just to play some 1v1 with friends or have fun in playing 2v2's... Threads like this makes me want to do it even more and I don't know if I'm able to sacrifice my free time.

No more BW blogs !

lol sorry but I won't stop ^^

As for where we all play, iccup is a good starting option if you can host. Can easily get 1v1 games there then and play with friends. These games in particular were played on shieldbattery since we both got access to the beta. Sign up for it and hope to get access in the near future (just invited more people yesterday):
