A big thing for me in video games is the campaign/story. In fact, single player ends up being my primary focus when a new game I am interested in is released. As a result of this, I feel like it is only fitting that I create a rank/list for some of my favorite characters and personalities from these games. Before I begin, let me mention that I will be limiting myself to only one character per franchise. (Also if there is some huge character that you might expect but is not included, chances are its because I haven't played the game in question).
5. Lee Everett
Franchise: The Walking Dead Game: The Walking Dead Season 1 Honorable Mentions: Clementine, Kenny
I have to be honest, for years I disliked The Walking Dead and all of it's mediums simply because it didn't sound like it could live up to the hype of being a series all about the zombie apocalypse. Add this to season 2 from the show... and I think I get a pass for being a newer fan of both the games and the show. As far as Lee himself is concerned, it's hard to find a more selfless guy. At the start of the game we find Lee on his way to prison for murder. Well, zombies happen. He eventually finds Clementine, a little girl without her parents. Lee sacrifices everything to ensure her safety and her readiness to survive in a world that belongs to the dead. This culminates in his death at the end of Season 1 of the game, as he gets bit. Pretty cool dude.
I can't say this enough, but FUCK WoW. Holy shit! Warcraft 3 though, that was pretty tolerable/good. Thrall was our introductory character to the first RTS Blizzard made since BW. Pretty awesome guy, wants to save his race, and find them a land they can call home. You know, normal Orc stuff. Add this to Chain Lightning and Feral Spirit and yay :D.
Okay honestly, this game does not get enough credit. Considering the fact that this game was made for 6 year olds, it contains hands down the best story in any video game I have played (except maybe BW). It is literally a story of deception, time travel, saving the world, and sacrificing oneself by doing so. For the first third of the game, you the player, (and you the character) are under the impression that Grovyle is actually the primary enemy of the game. You are treated to scenes of him "Stealing time gears" objects that protect the constant of time. At first you believe the time gears must remain in their stored location or time will literally stop. Turns out that it's the other way around, Grovyle is a pokemon from the future who is trying to collect all of the time gears and put them in their proper place to save the world, and change history, before time stops. By changing history, Grovyle's timeline no longer exists, and therefore neither does he. In other words, he recognizes his success will result in his death. I will admit, the story is a little over the top, and there are some flaws to it, but to play it yourself, you realize how damn good it is. I really can't do it justice. All I can say on the matter is that Grovyle knew the meaning of sacrifice.
2. Fawful
Franchise: Mario Bros Game: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga Honorable Mentions: None
Fawful may be the single greatest sidekick/right hand man for a villain I have ever seen. He isn't a genius, nor is he physically powerful. His dialogue just so happens to be rife with non sequiters, and it is amazing. "I am the great Cackletta's most best pupil, who is named Fawful! I am here, laughing at you! If you are giving us the chase, just to get your silly princess's voice, then you are idiots of foolishness! Princess Peach's sweet voice will soon be the bread that makes the sandwich of Cackletta's desires! And this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom!" "Now is when I ram you!" "I HAVE FURY!"
It's pretty great :D
1. Zeratul
Franchise: Starcraft Game: Starcraft: Brood War Honorable Mentions: Alarak, Stukov, Duran
What the fuck do you mean SC2 had a campaign? BW Zeratul was the ultimate badass. I have written an entire blog about this before, so I will try not to rehash to much. I dunno, Zeratul was easily my favorite character from Starcraft, I was thinking about lowering him down a notch or two because SC2 story is a thing, but I decided to say that my number one character is Zeratul from the game Starcraft: Brood War, loopholes motherfucker. I feel like they could have done a lot more with him in SC2. For example not killing him in some animesque way after the 2nd fucking level....

have you tried Super Mystery Dungeon? It's pretty damn difficult.
Woah I didn't know there was a new version! I'll def snag a copy for myself this christmas. When playing explorers of darkness/time, i really missed the brutal difficulty of red/blue. I'm looking forward to the version.
you know I find it very hard to believe these are your best, most influencial, or most memorable characters out of all the video games you've played... but, I really can't recall the personalities that were created in other games i'd consider.
what's more interesting that out of your top 5 you only have 1 MC from an RPG, and it's a pokemon ROFL. there's no final fantasy, chrono trigger, or any of the famous characters from other games which indicates a degree of hipsterism, or in which case you should consider playing one day.
as for my most favourite characters, I would actually say some of them are from fighting games. what's cool and what's been popular is that games, are allowing you to insert your own persona into the characters you're playing and fill in the small gaps in subtlety or even in the plot to make it unique to you. I think it's actually hard to find characters that are able to stand on their own feet because even if everything has been designed to be tragic and/or dramatic around them, there are a lot of perceivable flaws surrounding the things they do. and that's just all opinion
Zeratul will always be my favourite. I really felt his pain/doubt after the bw bonus mission.
It's really hard to think of other interesting characters. Now that I think about it, i haven't really played many games. I just played some games a lot.
duran > zeratul... i still can't believe they WASTED such an amazing character in sc2.. also, illidan and arthas were awesome characters too, the completely made their expansions in WoW.. actually, all of BC's endgame characters were pretty awesome, TK and SSC were great raids but black temple will always stand out to me as the most thematic raid of all time
I would likely have some starcraft ones in a list such as this as well due to how few games I've played outside of blizz titles. My #1 in such a list would have to be Jon irenicus from BG2 though, hell I could prob make a list out of BG2 alone.

Whoaaaa. You gotta play Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and A Link to the Past... at the very least.
My personal favorites are Riku from Kingdom Hearts, Sylvanas from Warcraft series, DJ Professor K from the Jet Set Radio series, GLaDoS, and Yosuke Nakamura from Persona 4. But your choices are great, Zeratul and Grovyle are sick, Thrall too.
from the top of my head: Tassadar (Zeratul used to be my favorite from StarCraft but after replaying the campaign, I leaned toward Tassadar more) Max Payne (no not the one from the third game) Tommy Vercetti (gangsta) Agent 47 (Silent Assassin) Kenji Oja (both the good and bad side ) Tyrande Whisperwind (fuck blizzard after TFT as in the books and WoW)
the multiplayer ended up being an overhyped turd, but Trevor from GTA5 was just a hilarious and fun character.
video games as a whole never tend to be even close to well written so usually my metric for good characters is funny/memorable/witty/etc and he hit all that pretty well.
#1. Jim Raynor because he was a movie character first. and the guy who played Raynor,Jason Patric, went on to play other compromised cops put in impossible situations similar to Raynor. Jason Patric is Jim Raynor in the 1991 movie and in the 2003 movie called Narc. Overall, the Blizzard voice guy is not Raynor.. Jason Patric is Raynor.
This is classic Jim Raynor in a much more realistic setting..
.
i like Horace Warfield as well.... the name alone puts him in the top 5.

Plain truth! 5/5 for BW Zeratul boss love!
My list:
1) Melthas: Albion, Blue Byte RPG from 1998 2) Tassadar: Starcraft 3) El Burro: Grand Theft Auto 1, mexican-american Gangsterboss 4) "Horny": Dungeon Keeper 2 5) The Creeper, Morrowind, Elder Scrolls Franchise
