This is specifically at existing quickcasters but can probably be applied to everyone since they are basically pushing everyone towards a form of quickcast....


Quickcast should work without having to hold control to cast on allies.

For salve, tango and clarity: If you press 1 and your mouse is not over a friendly hero then you salve yourself. If you press 1 and your mouse is over a friendly hero then you salve them. Where is control button needed here?

For bottle: If you press 2 and your mouse is not over a friendly hero then you bottle yourself. If you press 2 and your mouse is over a friendly hero then you bottle them. Where is control button needed here?
This issue has come up suddenly because they just made it so that everyone has to hold control to use salves etc. We had to do it for bottle, and it was annoying many times, but I never really thought about it until today.

Should quickcast users really have to press control EVER?

I can't seem to see how it makes sense to make us use that extra button if the game controls can just be designed to make salving and bottling work without having to press it.

There is no conflict of information going on... if you have your mouse over an ally when you press salve/clarity/bottle then you use it on them. If you have it not over an ally then you use it on yourself.

What's the big deal with needing to hold control?



tldr:

why do we need control button in the first place if they can just make it so "hover over ally = use on ally" + "dont hover over ally = use on self"

make it a hotkey choice or something not a mandated fuck you to people with different control schemes

yeah

i've spent some time thinking about it and there are 3 different "styles" of using item hotkeys (at least) but this new change forces everyone (quickcaster and normalcaster alike) to use 1 "inbetween" style


here's the styles, using forcestaff (i know they haven't implemented controlcast with forcestaff or euls yet but this illustrates what would happen if they did and what sort of impact we would have on gameplay)

style 1
normalcast: doubletap to use on self, mouseover and tap and click to use on ally or opponent
slow to use on self and targets, but no chance of fucking up

style 2
quickcast: mouseover self (portrait) or target and tap to use
fast to use on self, very fast to use on target, chance of misclicks

style 3
controlcast: tap to use on self, mouseover and hold control and tap to use on target
very fast to use on self, slow to use on target, only works with limited hotkeys (eg 1, 2, 3)


as you can see they are very distinct styles of using the same item and you would even prefer one style over the other depending on what hero you play and how you intend to most use the item.

notably for pudge i use style 1: i turn off quickcast for forcestaff because i doubletap it more than i use it on allies

for lina i use style 2: i need quickcast to euls targets instantly and i'm easily fast/accurate enough to use it on myself when i need to


if style 3 (controlcast) is applied to force staff then what would happen?

for pudge: i could forcestaff myself instantly with 1 tap whilst maintaining my hook aim. i could forcestaff allies at a slow/moderate speed. i would def consider using style 3 for pudge instead of style 1 or 2

for lina: i could euls myself instantly with 1 tap but eulsing opponents would be stupidly cumbersome. i would never use style 3 for lina



style 4 is a theoretical implementation of quickcast without requiring self-targetting. basically its style 3 but without having to hold down control to target people.

to use force staff on yourself you tap 3 one time without any need to mouseover.
to use it on targets you mouseover them and press 3.

to use salve on yourself you tap 1 one time.
to use it on targets you mouseover them and press 1.

to use bottle you tap 2.
to use bottle on allies you mouseover and tap 2.

so what's the disadvantage of style 4 over style 3 where you need to hold control half the time?

with style 4, if you try to bottle yourself whilst targetting an ally with a spell (like warlock heal or dazzle grave) then you will try to bottle your target instead of yourself. infact , if you try to bottle yourself at any time with an ally accidently in your mouseover then you will not bottle yourself and instead try to bottle them.

so how does style 4 differ in potency from style 1, 2, and 3?
1) bottling self and bottling allies is super fast
2) you will fuck up your selfbottle if you try to selfbottle while mouseovering an ally.

so really it boils down to how problematic it is to selfbottle whilst not targetting an ally
