I've had Starcraft 2 since the midnight release in 2010. Since then I've played quite a lot, although not as much these days as before. Improvement was never something that I focused on, in the sense I never thought of my playtime as practice. I played to have fun, which also meant a lot of team games. Over time, I did notice improvement though. I remember when I first realized that I could properly macro a two base all in. It did not seem like an incremental improvement, rather a tipping point, after which I did not have to focus on macro as much in order to do it properly on 2 bases. I could then turn my attention to other things like controlling my army around the map, and execute a more complex timing attack than a 1 base all in.

Eventually in my improvement though, it felt like I hit a ceiling. That ceiling was at the mid-master level back when master was easier to get into (it was the top 2% I believe). The problem was that I could not properly macro 3 bases; that is, keep pace with production cycles while being active with my army. Once it got to a certain point in the game, when I had 3 bases humming and was attacking, I would bank thousands inevitably. Even playing for several years, this remained the case.

Just recently though, I think I passed another tipping point. I suddenly can tell that I know how to properly macro 3 bases and more. I now feel in solid control of the game into the late game. The result is a more whole awareness of the game, with the mechanics to actively meet every aspect of it. The most important thing is that I can now maintain production cycles while being as active as possible with my army. What's really cool though, is that there have been other, unexpected benefits. These are things that I did not consciously seek out, they just all the sudden came to me. So for example I now think to look at the minimap, to keep tabs on my army and my vision. I also think to keep tabs on my production cycles, keep tabs on where my rallies and reinforcements are and where they should be, keep tabs on upgrades, base defense, and the timing of further expansions beyond the 3rd. I think my apm has also increased by maybe 20 or so, again without a conscious effort to improve it.

The reason for the change must have a lot to do with improvement through repetition playing the game, but I think it also to do with my confidence in myself. This is something I've been working on over time, and now led by improvements in my job, I have just felt more confident. I think this carried over to Starcraft, and I feel more relaxed when playing, and can focus more on the game.

It's a great change, and it will probably keep me playing Starcraft for a long time to come.

What's your race? If it's toss, their macro is laughable compared to the other races and you should not be that proud. I mean robo constantly making and sprinkle gate units as needed is not that hard to do with multiple building selection.

You must have a lot of friends.
We have multiple brackets generated in advance. Relax . (Kennigit) I just simply do not understand how it can be the time to play can be 22nd at 9:30 pm PST / midnight the 23rd at the same time. (GGzerg)

Not only that, but the overpowered nature of the race means you will naturally get much better once you figure out how to exploit the imbalance. Wait, is Protoss still OP?

OT though I think the tipping point is usually once you've internalized all the timings, statistics, and basic builds in any game. For example, if you see your opponent in a 1v1 PvT with no attack upgrade while you have an armor upgrade advantage, you will know instinctively that a direct fight will be in your favor, and you'll posture accordingly. Or if a warpgate cycle is 30 seconds, eventually you remember to only check your warpgates after that amount of time (not every 5 seconds -- a savings in APM of 83%). Those things were what got me to the point of rarely slipping up on macro. Improvements in APM were to me much less significant.
