1 question (a serious one). I have no clue of HOTS, can u say me if Naniwa is actually good in the game? I am a huge fan and I wonder if he is as good in a team game as in sc2.

He's been playing with other people in his team, and has played with them on stream (not from his perspective since it's his teammate streaming it), he seems average at the game from a "pro" point. Better than the average joe but not particularly amazing. Saying that the account I saw him playing on was one named NaNiwa and unless he's changed the name (only way is to change the actual account name which is allows once) Hotslogs says he's Silver ranked, which means he's bad. So I think either he doesn't care, or isn't playing on a Naniwa named account.
To put it this way the popular teams for reaching the finals are EG and TL EG being the most likely to win, since they're team snowflake who were/are considered the second best team. The best team being SMG but none of them are in blizzcon.
Anyway it will be good matches all around I think. I'm hyped.
Much as I want to support Sheth and co, I think EG have this.

Esv iakona thoughts: So I really loved how they completely redid all the models to make they fit in the Egyptian theme. The giant camps were right next to each other. Which means its pretty easy to get double giants and push with that. not too sure how the new mechanic works but i think it will make the first forts go down very quickly.
Gmarshal thoughts:
Lost vikings: you have three individually microable heroes, while you start with no skills they can gain new one through talents. no stock talents for them, they seem to be really good at mercing, they're all about micro though
The sky temple map looks awesome asthetically they really went all in with the egyptian theme, and its visually awesome the objective is to hold temples held by neutral units, these shoot lightning at the opposing buildings

Holy shit Lost vikings will be strong for soaking exp, you could see some interesting passive level gain strats with them, assuming you can keep track of three heroes in such a fast paced game. How squishy are they?

How squishy are they? Except for the one bound to key #1, (olaf i think), they're all very squishy, olaf has a charge passive and a regen passive though, they all seem to have passives related to their character
Just played as jaina, she's super squishy but deals a ton of damage, her passive increases damage and slows the target for each previous spell that hit the enemy, her spells have decent range, one is an arrow like bolt, one is an aoe blizzard like she had in wc3 and the third is a cone of cold. she can get escapes through talents like a leve 20 one that makes her not dismount when she takes damage. ult include summoning a water elemental or an aoe ring of frost.

Tried thrall, he seems super strong, his ults are all disruption based (big aoe slow vs line stun) His passive heals him every 5 times he hits with an ability, windfury gives him attack speed and movement speed, chain lightning is chain lightining and his spirit wolf shoots in a line and roots. he's incredibly strong 1v1 and has super chase ability. he also mercs really well, using chain lighting + passive to heal.

Seems the heroes might need to be brought in line a bit? Well looking forward to playing with them.

Not sure about that, jaina is super squishy and will suffer the same issues as nova, lost vikings seem to be in a similar spot to other difficult to use heroes like abathur, its hard to judge without a lot more playtime. thrall seems the one without any real "drawback" but i have the feeling that he'd be a first target in teamfights which would cause him to explode easally, and to use his super disruptive ults\chase he needs to live.

I have only one simple HotS question. Please ask them if anything will be done to equalize the hero pool in draft mode, and if not, are they concerned by the unfairness of being more easily able to pick optimally for the situation when a team has bought a larger hero pool.
Thanks!

Closed beta on January 13th, that's actually not that far away. I'm really excited to try it out! Thanks GMarshal, great work. Not just this but with the entire Heroes coverage you're doing.

This last wave had 15x more invites than previous Ranked mode. DRAFT MODE. Including knowing the map ahead of time. Coinflip to see who goes first, order is Team 1 pick, team 2 pick twice, team 1 picks twice, team two picks twice, team one picks twice, team 2 gets last pick. there are going to be no bans in the game initially because "they don't want to add more time to the game". also because it limits people's heroes pool and because there is a small pool. this might change

Ranked modes: Hero league: any number of players, mmr will give you teammates and enemies of equal skill (also measures team compositon), looks for teams with similar compositions (e.g. if you have a three stack it'll face you against another three stack, if you're solo they try to find solo players). your ranking and skill rating are individual not based on who you play with. MUST BE PLAYER LEVEL 30 TO PLAY. Legends unleash\team league, requires you to queue up with 5 people. create a team with a name and a captian. up to 9 players on a team so you can sub out people. each person can be in up to three teams. team based skill rating and ranking. player level 40 required. Ranks: heavaly influenced by Hearthstone, rank starts at 50 goes to 1, victory gives you points, losing subtracts them. point # depends on differences in MMR. Seasons like in other games, you retain some points between seasons. match quality is important, so there is a hidden mmr. Mmr (skillrating) is persistent, not wiped between seasons.
LEAVERS: if you leave you still don't get anything (exp etc), leaver queue joins all the people who abandon games together. you earn your way out by completing games.

NEW HEROES Already talked about jaina, but from offical panel: updated look is a hybrid of wc3 look and wow look. she's a burster that requires managing mana and cooldowns to maximize damage.
AND THE POWER WENT OUT, PANEL PAUSED. POWER IS BACK STILL PAUSED
"We're terrified of melting the servers by adding too many people at once" :p Panel is suprisingly informative though.

Lol
that's pretty hilarious.

Ok, onto Q/A while the screens are down, going to try to ask about talentgating, but the line is long Will heroes be drawn from books\other sources: yes. Will get a grace leave Lost vikings brought on as a result of community feedback Will heroes from overwatch (new blizzard game) be added: eventually
TALENT GATING QUESTION: its still being looked at, "we want to see what's happening", we're still listening. "There are some real benefits to it" New question from me: gold economy, assuming i get up there
Question: improving metrics? yes, want to measure disables, damaged absorbed relative to death. working on improving how tanks do on post game measurements
DREADNAUGHT: why not bans? how are you balancing competitively? basically new heroes won't show up in competitive mode post draft, and might add bans later
Another question about leavers, blergh
Additional game modes: looking to add some in game modes, will see where it goes Additional skins: working on it
End of season rewards: being worked on, not figured out yet.
Rest of presentation: thrall looks awesome, burst oriented assassin, they tried him as warrior and it was meh
SYLVANAS IS COMING! Art based on wow model. Dark archer, stops enemy minions via trait, shuts down towers via trait, deals a lot of damage, has mind control to control mercs. seems very push oriented.
Lost vikings, control three characters, all three can capture objectives! Example, you can capture two shrines on dragon shire and the dragon
Sky temple: capture temples, guardians spawn, fight them off to hold: art is floating city over a desert.
TOMB OF THE SPIDER QUEEN: kill minions, collect gems, summon spider queen jackal and spider themed
Blizzaed universes in game: DIABLO MAP HEAVEN\hell Some guy with a giant mace, diablo concepts for the map. GOREGEOUS MODLES.

introduces new players to the hero without overwhelming them with options.. after like 3 games with the hero you unlock everything so i dunno why people bitch about it O.o

People bitch because of the reset and the rest bitch because X guide says this is the best build. It's annoying but it's not something that needs to be changed.

At the sound panel, where they're talking about how they make the sounds, like how jainas ice bolt sound was made by breaking a bottle and mixing the sound. they have a design philosophy where they pick three things to focus on when desigining characters. Eg: Lost vikings are: lighthearted, humorous and medival
Its really interesting imo.
Apparently chain lightning sound was based on the sound of fireworks and a tapemeasure. feral spirit has a toolbox being dragged accross concrete and a blowtorch. Earthquake is a bell hitting the ground, and was planned to provide players with an audio queue about what's happening. Knowing these things you can kind of hear them..
They're also talking about how in the design they're looking for the hero at their prime, e.g. thrall at the cusp of his power, right after wc3 in the timeline. Also mentioned that they go through a process to write the voice actors lines, and in establising the personality of characters that lack defined personalities in lore (brightwing, murky, etc).
stuff that goes into writing lines: Gameplay reminders ~error messages (out of mana) ~caution suggestions (low hp!)
Interaction ~promotes interaction (reacting to other heroes) ~responses to player actions (thanks for using fountain, etc) ~references lore (arthas\uther)
The nexus is obviously slightly humorous since diablo vs raynor, since it makes no sense. which means lines are slanted towards providing a much lighter atmosphere.
Music: combined styles from multiple universes, mix of innovation and nostalgia. The lead music guy is walking us through how he came up with the opening screen theme. it started with a chord progression, which then got arranged, it started slow, and required a little action, so he added a four note violin theme to go with the main melody. not musically adept here, but the process is really fucking cool, he does one part at the time adding melody and support, etc, blending it together with software. the guy is really, really awesome and talented, i'm really impressed
Q\a session: Apparently blowtorch soundeffect resulted in someone being burned Brightwing sounds are the result of someone's inside joke with their wife Are we gonna get sound effects\different lines with skins? yes, for master skins Each character has about 300 lines. Sound management: to reduce sound fatigue, all other heroes are 50% less loud than yours what's the sound hierarchy: prioritized critical information, ultimates need sound queues, lots of playing goes into figuring this out. Sound on loading screens is still being changed\evaluated
|
Sounds really interesting, I hope they can continue telling us about all the little things that go into making this game after blizzcon through their youtube channel, I loved the voice acting videos.

I'm late for the heroes panel. They're now talking about thrall's design, caught the end of it, explaining that the design of frostwolf resilience (hit with 5 spells regen a bunch of health) was a way for a meele assassin to deal with incidental damage
Jaina: originally they wanted to be able summon a water elemental as a basic ability, but they couldn't balance the duration vs cooldown. Jaina's design is partially inspired by the Wow frost mage, specifically cone of cold. her trait (the one that increases damage and slow) was a natural extension, the spell selection was partially inspired by hearthstone. the selection and design was so tight that there were no major changes after design other than numbertweaking
There's apparently a community panel i'm missing regarding the pro scene, heyoka is watching it
Lost vikings: were very challenging because it required updating a 20 year old ip, that have really limited definition due to the limitations of technology at the time. They showerd a screenshot of the game and now i feel like playing lost vikings 2. the entire design of the hero revolved around having all three vikings, this was a challenge because that was the original conception for chens ultimate (elemental split), but it was abandoned because it was too clunky for users. originally each viking had a skillshot, which made controlling them a nightmare, so they used a concept called "movers and shooters", aka units that are dull on their own but interesting together. olaf is slow and tough but has a charge attack, the small guy has a lot of automatic escapes, and the sword guy has an aeo rightclick. but with no active abilities people felt like they needed more stuff, so they put the abilities in the talents and made sure they were all "affect all vikings" and had shared cooldowns
Battleground philosophy: "its best to think to them as raids, they all have shared elements, bosses, don't stand in the fire", there are a lot of stable core elements, like mercs, forts, the core proper, so that players always have an idea of how the game plays.
Sky temple: general rundown: temples shoot lasers, defended by neutrals.
They're going to talk about skytemple and where they're going. Talking about the ancient egyprian vibe, it started with concept art, the aqueduct system and hot air baloons are all props they really liked. concept art looks really cool. "Snakes and scarabs" was a key concept. then they started 3-d modeling. they're taking a "scuptural approach", they make a highres 3-d computer model and then they downscale it.
They start with big blocky shapes and sculpt down.
With skytemple they redid all the models to match the theme, concept art is very very cool, all the asthetics were brought together to make it work astherically
TOMB OF THE SPIDER QUEEN All interior, movie lighting, lots of spiders. feels like a vast undercity. Lots of props. Exclusive look at the map, seems like two lanes, map perspective isn't great, couldn't really glean any details, but it looks awesome
WHATS NEXT: Diablo map, high heavens vs burning hells, three lanes, half hell half heaven. concept art is pretty impressive, looks like minion pulling a seige weapon? giant guy with mace again, hero or minoon? Guy with giant cleaver and crusader i think, idk, not a diablo guy.
Q\a: No one seems to want to ask questions Rogue abilities? High chance

Finals coming up eg vs c9
Kk, this is starting up, lots of talking that isn't super relevant.
Lz very articulate and mannered. 10\10
Video introduction that's not super interesting
Map 1 is haunted mines.
C9: arthas, tychus, uther, zagara, CHEN Eg: tyreal, faldstad, stitches, tassadar, rehgar
Chen is a surprising pick
C9 kill 2 eg heroes, but skulls are even, and eg got mercs, arthas picked off
Eg loses faldstad in teamfight, c9 slight level advantage
EG being destroyed, they lost all the fights
|
huge initiation from eg but c9 and arthas in particular are just doing so much work in prolonged fights

C9 consists entirely of washed up 3rd tier NA ex-LoL players. It was pretty fun to see some familiar names. Not sure what your background is, but you might be familiar with names like Zuna or BobbyHankHill. If I recall correctly, viewer numbers were about 20k for the Finals.
|
where did you get that number? it was shown via directv and that doesnt display any viewer numbers
|
Across all the twitch streams (which obviously doesn't include Blizzcon streams and/or DTV) it was around 30-35k. Which I don't think is too bad considering how small the player pool is right now.
