Sorry if this topic is overdone, I tried Googling it but all of the intros to MOBAs predate Heroes of the Storm. If there's a recent guide go ahead and link me to it.

I have a newborn and a full-time job, I only have about 2-4 hours per week of free time. I wanted to play DotA2 but it seems far too complicated for me to get into considering how much time I have to play it. I heard HotS is more casual and the average game length is only about 20 minutes, so I'm attracted to trying it. Or perhaps I should just go with LoL or HoN, or some less popular game. Thoughts?

Some info about me: I played a lot of DotA1 for WC3:RoC, but that was before its popularity exploded so I'm probably a huge newbie in comparison to the rest of the world right now. I also played LoL for about two weeks with some friends but that obviously wasn't enough time to get into it. Other than that I'm pretty much a MOBA virgin. In terms of other games, I mostly play puzzle games and FPSs, though I was very much into Brood War and Wings of Liberty (never bought Heart of the Swarm, but I watch WCS time to time).

If you are looking for something that doesn't take a lot of time or learning, then HotS is great. Soltice Arena is also good. Otherwise, LoL is pretty good if you are playing ARAM mode or Dominion.

You're gonna get a lot of responses from people who like their own game recommending their game.

I would suggest playing whatever your friends play. In the end, MOBAs are only fun because of the people you play them with.

Precisely this, since Mobas are more team-oriented in general. I tried learning LoL about 2 years ago, but I didn't enjoy it much by myself. Later on, my friends and family started playing LoL, and then shortly thereafter my gf started playing, so it's natural I got into it as well. Now I'm having a blast with it. If they had started playing Dota 2, I would probably play that instead. I'm sure any of them are fun though.

I'd say HotS if you have/can get access. LoL sucks unless you know others who play it because the community is by far the worst in any game I've ever seen, and Dota has a steep learning curve and can be difficult to get into. HotS is easier to learn, doesn't play as strictly as other MOBAs (i.e. you don't have to sit in your lane for ten minutes to get CC), and games are short.

Basically whatever your friends play. Most MOBA players (not all) are simply cancer, and playing on your own with them is not very fun.

If i were to be asked either go Dota 2 but the learning curve of dota is somewhat difficult. You can also go Lol but the community is really bad.

I agree with everyone just play whatever MOBA game your friends are playing.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and just don't play a MOBA.

I would say Dota 2 it's pretty easy to get into. There are some in game tutorials you do to teach you he basics. People are gonna be dicks to noobs regardless of the Moba. Heroes of the storm....honestly I don't like it, I've neem in the alpha for 2 weeks just don't care for it.

I switched from SC2 to Dota 2, and I really like it. It didn't take me long to learn, it's very fun to watch, it's very fun to play, and I dunno, I just feel happy playing it. The community isn't mature as the SC2 community, but from what I hear it's still better than most games, and more mature than LoL.

I don't know much about HotS, so I don't know how Dota 2 compares there, but it is an enjoyable game with a big community, and also an esport with a 11 million prize pool coming up.

Also, easy transition if you really get into Dota 2, since LiquidDota has many past and present visitors of Teamliquid, and the site layout is very familiar in structure and content.

Given your time constraints HotS would probably be the easiest but it is also (imo) the least interesting. Personally I think dota 2 is the best game objectively but I mostly play league since that's what (as many others have said) my friends play, which is much more important.

sorry this might sound like a stupid question .... but why mobas?

with your time constraints i would really recommend something that doesnt require as steep a learning curve as mobas (some steeper than others). also having to deal with a toxic community that behaves like assholes to beginners in that little time you have, seems ... un-fun.

but if you really want to i would also recommend that apart from the big ones, you should look at the smaller ones.

dawngate has a interesting concept about roles and how you should play your hero. definitly worth taking a look at.
awesomenauts is a 2d very casual approach to the genre with wacky graphics and heroes
smite is a 3rd person view moba with interesting hero concepts and a lot of skillshots

im sure im forgetting a few, but those were the ones that sprang to mind.
keep calm and play dota!

It depends on you as a person. For me, I like more complex and difficult games, so DOTA2 is the best AoS I've found for fitting that bill. I'm also highly competitive, so again DOTA2 fit well, LoL did as well. I find the metagame and some of the hero mechanics more fun in DOTA2 but enjoyed LoL as well. But if you're more casual, don't care about competition so much or complexity, then HOTS or some other simpler AoS would probably be better.

considering you played a lot of dota 1, dota 2 would be the easiest way to go.

really, there are no huge changes.

Wow, I didn't even know this existed. I love the show, so I guess I might check this out later for shits and giggles.

People are mentioning HotS, which I think is a decent choice for the casual gamer. It's not quite a replacement for LoL or Dota2, but it's a nice supplement. I don't find it as interesting to watch as those games, but when people say that it's really fun to play, I believe them.

LoL is easier to get into. The lower learning curve lets you get into the "fun" of MOBAs quicker, I've found. If you're finding Dota2 to be a hard to learn, LoL may be a good choice to at least get the basic MOBA gameplay mechanics down.

While I think LoL is fun, Dota 2 can be fun as well once you get past the steep learning curve. It's really not a bad climb if you take it easy to play with bots and good friends at first. Both LoL and Dota 2 have strong eSports scenes if you're interested in dabbling in that again. LoL has the backing of a strong Korean scene if you're into cheering for the old KeSPA teams, but I find Dota 2 to be more interesting to watch.

Honestly I feel Dota2 is the better game... but I play LoL because I don't want to invest the time into Dota2. I only play LoL maybe a few games every week or two. It's enough to keep me ranked in gold and keep up with changes. Dota2 is way to complicated for me to keep up with just a few games.

For the record I have 138 hours on Dota2. It's a great game I just get bored of MOBA's quickly and move back to Starcraft. League is that perfect middle ground of difficult to master but easy to play.

"Play LoL"... ahahahaah too funny. Don't waste your time. Start trying everything but LoL. It should be dead last in a long list of games that are much more rewarding.

I think mobas in general have their flaws. The communities are very mean and especially at more casual skill brackets you get a lot more unsavory types in your game on your teams. That said, I don't think you can go wrong. Both games have their pluses and minuses. I only have like 150 hours of dota and like 750 in LoL. The learning curve in both games is high. I still can't recognize many dota heroes by portrait or remember what they do. It's very frustrating to play a game where you don't know what's going on.

Someone did say you can stick to aram in LoL or dominion but dominion is filled with bots at the casual level from what I hear, and arams does not a man satisfy. It's like just eating bread. Sure you can do it. It's just not very enjoyable.

My friends got me into both games tbh. I think also you should try to find something you can play with your wife, but maybe you don't need that much time together.

If you're going for casual 20 minute games, most games of hearthstone don't go over 20 minutes. I'd say 95% do not. But LoL and dota games can reach 1 hour at the 95%. If you're looking to unwind, the hearthstone community is amazing as far as TL communities go and the games are not stressful whereas LoL and Dota can really get your blood pressure up. You can't say mean things to people in Hearthstone either as the chat in game is just emotes. The worst thing about hearthstone is that many cards are hard to acquire without spending either lots of time or lots of money. The depth of the game is fairly low and while there's a lot to theorycraft, you can be gated by the cards you own. You can get pretty high in rank playing a rush deck or a deck with several rares after a few weeks of playing.

I recommend you stay away from MTG though. At least TL's MTG community. There's a few really hardcore assholes in there from what I've seen. MTG is lots of fun in person but you don't sound like you have the time for it.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Dota 2 has all the characters and things available to anyone, unlike LoL where you have to unlock them. If you aren't prepared to tryhard a lot, consider just avoiding MOBAs and play some old RTS with friends instead and chill out (RoN or AoE, not talking about stressful things like BW).
