Hello, I didn't know where to put this I placed it as a blog instead.

I was going around Facebook and I saw this game titled 2048. Out of curiosity, I clicked on it. It is an interesting game. You get a 4x4 grid with 2 initial tiles that may be 2 or 4. The objective is to combine tiles with the same number by pressing the arrow keys to move the tiles. Every time you move, another tile appears containing a 2 or 4. If 2 tiles would collide and have the same number, they combine to the next power of 2. The objective is to combine enough tiles to get to 2048. You lose when the 4x4 grid fills up and you have to legal moves.

So far the farthest I've had is a 512, a 256, and a 128.

Do you guys think that it is possible to get to 2048? This game is really tough since the new tile comes up at a random spot, and sometimes you get similar tiles but you can't combine them since it's tough to navigate the tiles the way you want to since new ones pop up at random spots.

If the new tiles appeared at a fixed spot, then I think it is possible since you have 16 squares. Assuming that one tile is already 1024 and you already have a 512 tile, you'll only need a new 2 tile that would go on to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 258, then 512.

So somehow, you need to play perfectly - every new tile is used so when you get to the higher powers of 2, the new tiles that would appear would be used almost immediately.

Fun game! Thanks for the share Got 128 on my first game, and it all went downhill after one move. It seems like once you've got an extra 2 on the board from a mistake you're gonna have a much harder time.

I wanna see someone write a program to beat this endlessly

Ah I was going to say if this wasn't an app yet it's going to be quick, very addictive.

They even cite Threes at the bottom on the site. My best score is 3092, I had a 256 block...

Thats such a mean game. It challanges humans to do what they are really bad at...following a stupid algorythm like a machine. Got to 1024 on my second try, didn't watch top row for one move ... still the first game figuring out the algorythm is fun.

Edit: Ok, third times the charm, spoilered a hint if you have trouble figuring it out.

The game does not care about in which, but put your highest tile it into one of the corners. hint3+ Show Spoiler +
You can move in 4 directions, you barely wanna use three, never 4 though.+ Show Spoiler +
lock your highest tile by always filling it's row up first

Damn, I got up to 512 on my first try, but due to the way the game works the game gets much harder the more tiles you have, so getting 2048...

Interesting game. My game only ended because I made one wrong move. I was going to merge the two 32s in the middle to combine with the 64, then that 128 with the 128 and then with the 256, but I messed up

First try:

play this for an hour "going into one corner" then suddenly start playing into the opposite corner/side. I feels like the numbers are on backwards!!

The strategy I used to win:

The key in this game is building up big numbers close to each other so that you can double them in a "chain". For example put 1024 in the top left corner, then 512, 256, 128, then in the 2nd line from the right to the left: 64, 32, etc. once you are able to double one of the numbers (for example you add a 32 to a 32 and it becomes 64) you can progressively double all the other numbers (64+64 =128, 128+128 = 256 and so on).

YESS! After _way_ too many hours, I managed to get it as well. I just kept getting unlucky and/or make stupid mistakes at the end, but finally I managed to have a bit of RNG on my side and make the right calls.

Yes, ending looks like a mess. I had to go for a risky shot at the end, it paid off.

The only annoying thing about this kind of games is that you sometimes build up a perfect position, only to have it rouined by RNG. My wife playes a lot of Move the Box on Android (a game where you blow up same pieces while they fall from sky and you get a huge bonus for blowing up a lot of pieces in one move), but it has the same issue, where you never know if your all effort wasn't in vein. Here, the cornering strategy is obvious, but I don't think you can avoid having no more moves towards the corner and once you abandon your position, you just have to pray that a lone 2 won't be stuck there forever ...

It's tough to line up the tiles once you get 1024.

Oh finally managed to get it. I have this feeling that when you get the 1024 block, you can't afford to have extra higher powers of two lying around since they'll take up space and they won't be of much use.
