Getting back into MTG.

I'm currently thinking of getting back into Magic the Gathering again. I played a bit and watched pro-magic up until the Zendikar block (all the way out), in which case I stopped with that for various reasons.

However, I'm now planning to get back into MTG again, I will go on a release-draft for the new set Theros next week. So I'm wondering, is there anything that I should know? Has there been any major changes to the rules of the game since the Zendikar block?

Legendary rules: if you have a legendary permanent named X and you play a second copy of X, only one gets destroyed and you also get to choose which one goes to the graveyard. Both you and your opponent can have a copy of X in play simultaneously (so there are no more clone shenanigans to kill enemy legendary creatures). the same applies to planeswalker.

How long did you play? My advice is to get good at limited formats in general. I don't mean learn all the cards in a given block and the good draft strategies, just general card evaluation and limited skillsets including good combat math during games and trying to read what removal they have, etc. This way, you can always go play a draft for $15 and have a good time without having to keep up with all the details of the game. And you might even open/win some $ cards.

I'm going to the Theros prerelease tomorrow; I haven't played at a store in over a year or two. Should be fun, going to have some newbie friends at an event for the first time. :D

Yeah, I was planning to "start over" from Theros. Gave my old cards to my brother, maybe I can get some back.

And you might even open/win some $ cards.

Because I've gotten lucky opening a Dota2-chest, I know that I indeed can open good stuff

At the casual level the largest and I think only functional rules change is the legendary interaction. Your legendary permanents do not cause your opponent's legendary permanents to be destroyed. Second when you play a legendary permanent that you already control, only one is sacrificed instead of both, you chose which one is sacrificed. This means if you control a planeswalker you can activate it then play a second one, sacrifice the first one, and activate the second one.

The other one is the missed triggers overhaul, which shouldn't be an issue at the pre-release but at a competitive event, the judge will ask the opponent whether or not they want to put the missed trigger on the top of the stack before anyone else would get priority.

The best way to get back into magic is to definitely play a lot of draft and sealed to try and build a collection while having a great time.

yeah what is the current meta deck right now ? the last time i played was when the meta was still "all decks are cawblades"

I think this came after Zendikar (maybe in the middle?). Most important thing in that article is that Combat Damage no longer uses the Stack, so watch out when you try some cute combat tricks.

It came between the Alara and Zendikar blocks, so I am familiar with those changes.
