Hey again guys and gals, and welcome to yet another day of game analysis by yours truly, Phalanx. Today's game was a pretty hard nail-biter as the player, with a severely harsh mis-step during the mid game. I should really start getting in the habit of writing these blog posts earlier in the day, since I write them right before I go to sleep and as a result often rush the end game... but whatever.

A couple of quite notes before I start; First, I have been taken in by a new clan (part of the reason I decided to leave DOx was because I had talked about joining this new clan). Not A Chance Gaming, [NACSC], will be my new clan to play in for the time being. NAC has only been created recently, so make sure to give us some love to kick us off to a great start!
https://www.facebook.com/NacGaming
http://nacgaming.net/
Next; tomorrow will be another day in which I actually won't be able to ladder! T.T So instead, I'll be spending my time trying to make an overlay to use while streaming (which I plan on starting soon!).

Ok, time to get down to the dirty stuff! LETS GO REPLAAAAAAAAY!!!

replay : http://drop.sc/337902

The Game

Early Game
+ Show Spoiler +

In the first time since... I can't remember when, a while anyways. I decided to go for a full out forge fast expand. I've been trying to master a gateway expand versus zerg ever since all the pros used it in WCS and all that jazz, but recently my successrate against zerg has dropped so bad that my winrate has become below 40% against them. It's funny, that I used to suck hard and PvT and rock worlds in PvZ, but now it's switched up around.

"Forge Fast Expand or die trying"

Just as an extra kick in the face to myself as to why I should regularly be going FFE again, I managed to get a cannon down at my enemy's third. For some reason his lings only wanted to target my probe, rather than cancle my cannon.

Around around the Minrel' go 'round, the lings chase the probe~

Because the lings really wanted my probe, the cannon completes, forcing the cancellation of the hatchery. I must say that I love myself some delayed zerg 3rd bases.

Meat shards flying everywhere!

I feel pretty good about the way the early game is turning out already, so I decide to go back to my good ol' strategy of double stargate into voidray production while taking a third. I started to really avoid going voidray ever since all the zergs wanted to mass muta every game, but since that seemed to have cooled down a bit I was pretty safe in my decision.

My 3rd base managed to even finish before the 10 minute mark, and feeling pretty confident in my macro, I continue to build up voidrays and start teching to high templar as fast as I can.

Ooh la laah, a fast 3rd! Chicks dig fast 3rds.

Mid Game
+ Show Spoiler +

My gradual build up of mass air had it's disadvantages... namely fighting against lings. The first flood of lings came at 12 minutes, with roughly 60 lings running into my natural, which was only guarded by 2 cannons. The cannons fight bravely, but eventually are overwhelmed.

Nexus down

The losses from both sides were surprisingly even, so although I was temporarily set back in income, the difference quickly lessened. My tech starts building up quite well, and by the time the zerg attempts a second runby into my natural, Storm has completed, and carriers have started to warp in as well.

All 3 of protoss' most OP abilities/units all in 1 frame!

My opponent is really persistent with the lings... and even goes for a baneling bust, which is very successful. My voidrays were all out of position, leaving the base open for a few seconds too long, and the banelings bust down my ramp as lings swarm in.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END!?

After the runby, I checked the workers killed... 48 workers were killed in that runby. 1 hex space, causes casualties of 48 workers.

How many of you would just GG after that?

PRETTY FUCKIN ANNOYING DAMAGE. My army is completely immune to his lings, but at the same time I now am set far, far behind his economy. I start up a 4th base to suppliment my income and probe production.

End Game
+ Show Spoiler +

I actually have to admit that i probably only won this game because of one mighty flaw in my opponent's game plan; he made hydralisks. While hydras may be effective against voidrays, they aren't very good against carriers and Storms.

Like so.

And he just kept going hydras! The big fight showed above (which I won't go into detail in because it basically was a-move with some Ts thrown in) left me at a big supply advantage and freed up room to just blast out carriers.

Carrier has arrived.

Carriers, in my opinion, are the most looked-down-upon units in StarCraft (I'm sure there's a better word for that). Everyone bitches about them and thinks they're a joke. However, if you get into the late game with some upgraded carriers, they can deal some serious shit to your enemies. And nothing really throws in that punch of "I just beat you" than using carriers. I also was able to keep constant control of the Xel'Naga watch towers, allowing me to intercept incoming counterattack attempts as well as deny further expansions.

Having basically starved out my enemy... at least by zerg standards, I move out with all my units and Emily tagging along behind. At 10 carriers, +3 attack, many voidrays, and HT support, I feel invincible.

When's the last time you saw this many carriers in a ladder game?

My enemy goes in for a hydralisk counter attack to my 4th base; how futile! I'll just use Emily to recall my units!... Or so I thought. Surprisingly, the F button doesn't seem to be the same as the R button, and I end up not recalling my units ASAP.

...Emily? where are you going Emily?

I figured out that I pressed F instead of R RIGHT as Emily left recall range on any of my units. Luckliy, I have so much army supply that I proceed to run towards his army to crush it. My enemy smartly GGs out.

Damn right it was a Good Game.

Never give up Never surrender, words to live by. that mid game was pretty harsh, and I expected to lose, but since I kept going on strong with my carrier production I was able to pull forward once more.

Thanks again for having read through my replay analysis, and i hope that you all have a fabulous day. As for myself, I'll be having a hell of a road trip tomorrow to see a play T.T WHY DO FAMILIES, LIKE... NEED TO DO STUFF AS A FAMILY!? I'll try to work on some stuff to write about tomorrow, and until then, GL HF and don't kill yourselves IRL!

Oh also before you leave, I want your opinion; Should I keep unit lifebars on at all times? Or should I keep them off? I accidentally kept it on for most of the pictures today, but does that make the pictures look too crowded for you guys?

P.S.

I see you analyze your games daily, and I have a few questions for you:

1) do you see any signs of improvement after doing this for a while?
2) do you have 1 build per match-up that you play over and over again?
3) after my finals, I want to focus about 2 hours a day on SC and get masters before college starts again in september; what do you think I should do to improve gradually?

well, lets see...

1) Most of the time, I don't find much of anything new after watching the replay rather than just having played the game. If you're planning on doing this sort of thing yourself to improve your gameplay, I'd suggest to not look over every single replay you have, but rather just look over the ones in which you really don't get why you losed. I think that doing these analysiseseses has helped me improve a little bit, although I haven't been able to really play enough to improve as much as I'd like (Totally have the same goal of reaching masters during the summer)

2) I basically have 1 build to do per match up. Of course, the thing is that I do change the build depending on what I scout or whether I have a really messed up game going on (ex. I got my gas stolen by a probe, and decided to just go 4gate and win). I think that until you reach a point in your game play where you really are good enough to be able to pull it off, you should focus on just using 1 build... unless the build sucks, of course. As for the builds I use, they are:
PvP - stargate (phoenix) into whatever the fuck goes on
PvT - 2stalkers + MSC for early game, core composition of chargelot/colossi/phoenix
PvZ - FFE into double stargate voidray production, followed by carrier/ht once the 3rd is down.

3) If you wish to focus on something and be able to get to masters, I think that the things you should do to improve may differ depending on your league. The most important thing, in my opinion, is obtain the ability to learn why you lost. Don't just let a loss fly past you and derp along again, figure out why you lost; did you just have shit macro? Did you lose in positional fights? Did you not scout his fast gas? did you allow him to macro freely after a greedy expo?
Also just a quick tip on scouting; when scouting, don't scout for what he IS doing, scout for what he CAN'T be doing. This actually was advice I found that got me through quite a while, and the key concept of it is that it will really slim down the possibilities you need to consider while you react. If you scout fast double gas in the very early game, that means that your enemy can't possibly be going for a balls-to-the-wall fast expand (either that or he's doing it terribly so you'd win). At my level I've seen enough games that I can kind of figure out what exactly they're trying to do based on repeated scouting, but the general idea of looking for what they're not doing still is a very good scouting method.

GL on masters! (also maybe subscribe to me so I can get mohr consistent readers! cuz, I'm greedy like that <3)
