While there are strong arguments to be made for not bothering with writing Kanji too much, I would strongly suggest to practice writing the most important (~100 or so at least) Kanji. It helps you a great deal with picking Kanji apart into radicals quickly and as such improves your Kanji learning quite a bit. Having a general idea on the stroke order of any given Kanji also helps.
Later on, you might want to focus more on kanji <-> meaning/pronounciation vocabulary instead and that's all fine and well. But I do think that some basic Kanji writing skills are important.

I'm thinking of putting together a very simple Anki deck on radicals, starting with the Japanese Wiki entry on radicals and then expanding by a few made up radicals. Just a Radical and a simple name (which can easily be changed to your own name for the radical) on each card. I'd upload it in case someone else can make use of it.
Any suggestions for made up radicals?
