Life after college is interesting. Sometimes you find you have more time than you could imagine and, other times, you feel so wiped after a day's work, you fall asleep on the couch before you finish dinner.
My post college social life has been extremely varying. It started with months of just gaming and keeping to myself, exploded into a plethora of social events, parties, clubbing, meeting new people, etc, then smashed right down again to sleeping and gaming when I got home.
I somehow got started on Dr. Who, which can take up a surprising amount of time. One or two episodes seems to eat more time than I could expect. And I have found myself with less and less time for games. I partially blame my own lack of motivation to play sometimes and I partially blame phone games, which keep me just amused enough to stay in place, but don't leave me with the same since of victory and accomplishment that more complex games do.
Spring was what seemed to revive my motivation, though. The grey clouds of Seattle have been parting and enabling the sun to drench me in a rejuvenating warmth. I don't think I realized how much the weather was affecting me until it was working once again in my favor.
I suspect the summer here in Seattle will be nicer than it was last year in LA. I still suffer from bitterness over the Riot incident, but the gaming industry is tempting me once again. More job offers, more motivation to dive into the gaming world that I know is so cruel. But, hey! I'm an engineer, right? It can't be too much worse.
What I have learned about the industry over the years is that connections matter. Perhaps they do in every industry, it would only make sense, but the passion and connections that can be shared in the gaming industry seem so much more natural for me. With my jack of all trades skill set, however, I am unsure how to proceed if I do go for this crazy dream. I have been offered both project management and game development positions, both extremely intriguing, but I can admit that I am quite uncertain of their expectations and my own ability to fulfill them.
I do believe I have underestimated my ability to make connections, though. To encourage and grow interest in a game or subject or project or person. I can't say that community work is the most intriguing option out there, but I feel like it may be one that I could excel at.

You are a female in a male-dominated world.
It's much easier for you to make those connections simply due to the fact that your average Game industry worker is more willing to get "buddy buddy" with you simply because of your gender. I'm not trying to be mean or hateful, and i might sound a bit jealous, but i'll admit that it pretty much IS the case.
Simply put a Game designer at Riot, who is male and single cares a LOT more about getting to know you, than they do any male fans/hopeful applicants.
Simply being a woman trying to work in the gaming industry is a big enough plus, just for companies to bring in a bit of variation into their workforce/design process.
IDK its just one of those... I would love to see the viewer #'s regarding videos starring Phreak and videos starring Nikasaur. Phreak knows a lot more, but Nikasaur is a LOT better looking in front of a camera, especially for a video designed to appeal to the 12-35 yr old Male demographic.
IDK just interesting for you to be so jaded and call the industry "cruel" for giving you a job when there are millions of applicants who would trade anything to work in that same industry.

I don't really like this post... It completely disregards the fact that the industry is desperately looking to hire more women for very valid reasons. It comes off as "hey, you think you're good at networking but in reality you're a hot dog vendor at an obesity recovery camp."
Don't get me wrong, i've worked with women who are completely hopeless in gaming for various reasons, but i've worked with even more hopeless guys and i can't help but think that if the m:f ratio was evened out, so would the prevalence of hopeless cases on both sides of the colon.
Female game workers might have an easier time getting hired for now, but the spotlight will be on each and every one of them. I've heard of so many cases of sexual harassment as a result of the culture clash that happens when the first girls are accepted into the workforce of an all male studio. While your post assumes that attention is flattering and beneficial (which it indeed may be, if you have the right personality), it carries with it a back side as well.
I don't find it hard to accept that OP is good at making connections/networking, i don't know why you'd go through the trouble of writing that post to disprove it. Make your own blog complaining about the alleged unfair nature of the industry instead if you want, directing your presumptions at someone in particular becomes too personal.

you shouldn't think too much about your own ability, if the company is giving you a chance, then obviously they think you have it in you the exact skill needed will be developed when you start doing the job.

I am quoting this post because I agree with the response, but, before I continue, I want to point out some things:
1) Phreak does balancing, QA, design, commentating, AND community interaction due to his high ELO and his WC3 days. Nika just does community interaction and is passionate about creative writing, etc. Rather difficult to compare the two, they have extremely different jobs and passions outside of just LoL itself.
2) I called the industry "cruel" due to the long work hours and high demands. Which is true. Ask anyone in it. This is, of course, similar to engineering work, which has long hours and high demands. They are not cruel for giving me a job, I have no clue how anyone read it like that.
As for my connections, some were made from mutual attraction, but more were made from shared interests and friends. For instance, I became good friends with Diggity, a name many of you are familiar with. This connection was made through common friends and our mutual interest in League of Legends. It was certainly not due to attraction and he treats his male and female friends similarly.
The magical thing with connections is that they grow exponentially in number, so the few I started with grew quickly

It was a contractor position (they try everyone out as a contractor for 3 months before hiring them in the entry level positions). Thus, I had no offer sheet, only the contract, which I had signed, but which was not going to be signed by them and finished until I came in to finalize the paperwork on my first day.
I may have been still able to pursue some kind of legal action, but I was so heartbroken and upset about the whole situation, I tried to just ignore it.

Anyways, I'm very sorry to hear about your incident with Riot Games, I have never heard of a company with such unprofessional hiring practices, even for contractor positions. Yeah, I'm starting a summer internship in the VFX industry this July and I've been sure to reply to every email promptly and enthusiastically.
There's a million awesome things about about these types of jobs, but you need to be on everybody's good list or doors can get shut pretty hard.

My job is currently at the point where I am waiting on so many outside resources to get information and products back to me, I get bored and find myself with little work to do. However, the software team just tried to recruit me yesterday, so now I'm studying JavaScript to see if I can help out! Luckily, I already studied Rackett and Java, so JavaScript is pretty easy right now. HOWEVER, === (and !==) is(are) retarded and someone needs to be smacked over that one.
Well, one of them was Capcom. I didn't get the details, because I said I had no intention to moving to Canada right now, so I can't stay if the offer was good.

Fill out 25 pages of legal paperwork but don't make a blog about it? I've only ever heard good things about Riot from employees. Given how incredibly unfair their treatment of you sounds, it would have become a story if you wanted it to be.
In retrospect you probably did the smart thing, but how did you manage to keep the lid on at the time?

Sounds like it was more of a mis-communication than anything else.
Someone promised something that they could not deliver/were not in a position to deliver.
It sounds like you moved and signed a new lease on a verbal agreement? And then found out that was promised could not be delivered?
Pure Speculation, completely made on assumptions, this is just what I think might have happened. Because businesses generally dont have you sign a contract, and wait for you to move, to try to tear up that contract, cause that is HUGELY illegal, and will result in a GIANT lawsuit.
I cant imagine, that they offered you a position, you signed a contract, and once you moved they told you there was no position for you.
It sounds like someone said "Come to Cali, we'll get you a job at Riot" and then you moved, signed a lease, and that person/people couldnt deliver.
Also Sidenote: I dont know how its disturbing to know that people arent interested in hiring people who have a history of seeking legal action against their employers.
No matter how you look at it there is no reason that something like this should be ignored.

and there will always be people who can do the job just as well, while remaining a non-problem.

I was shocked, unsure of my legal abilities, and was hoping they'd turn around and say "Yeah, that department was just going through too many changes, come back!" Also, writing a blog about it when you are taking legal action seems like a poor idea, as one poorly worded sentence could come back to bite you.
As for only good things about Riot, I don't know which employees you are talking to. Some like it, but I know of many issues that run deep in the company.
Truthfully, I cried and felt destroyed and scared. I was out of college, deep in debt, jobless and had just been betrayed by a company I was pretty much willing to pledge my life to. It's hard being treated like shit by something you love and cared about so deeply.
I even stopped playing League for a while, just worked on job searching and MLP crafts, playing a decent amount of Smite. I sent out a few bitter Tweets (which I generally deleted in a few hours/days), but I tried to keep it mostly to myself.
I apologize, I swear I had mentioned it before. I am pretty much over the incident, as it has been a year since then. It still hurts to think about sometimes, but I like to think I'm happier where I am now than I would have been there. Even if Riot Riku sounds awesome.

He replied to me that he would be handling my employment and that I would receive my paperwork the next week.
A week later, I had still not received the paperwork and I sent him an e-mail reminder, to which he replied the paperwork would come soon. A week after that (May 3rd), I had still not received any paperwork and e-mailed him again, to which I received no reply. While the last message I had received from him stated " I'm not sure what happened but I apologize. I'll email someone now and make sure you get squared away," I was informed by a member of the hiring staff that, in fact, *** had not signed the paperwork required and they were waiting on him to give me my paperwork. While I understand if there was some other reason he did not wish to sign my paperwork or if he forgot to sign a document, I found it unprofessional that, not only did he not keep me informed of the progress, but he also did not reply to two of my e-mails (one on May 3rd and one on May 6th) inquiring about the paperwork that I had been supposed to receive two weeks earlier.
On May 20th, I restated my ideal start date to be June 1st and *** confirmed this date on May 21st. However, *** contacted me on May 25th asking to speak with me by phone on May 29th, I told him I would be free to talk all day. I did not receive a call nor e-mail on May 29th. I received my final employment papers on May 30th from ****** and e-mailed *** to inform him of the papers and that I had not received a call from him.
He e-mailed late on May 30th informing me that the offer of employment was being retracted and gave no clear reasoning as to why. Note that this was less than 48 hours before my start date, well after I had committed to Riot Games by halting my pursuit of other jobs and moving to Santa Monica, even signing a one year lease. He said he would call me the next week to explain why the position was suddenly taken away from me. I agreed to the phonecall, but I received no future contact from him. It has been over a month and I still have not received an explanation as to why I was lead on only to have the position taken away from me in the last second.
I am shocked and appalled that this would be the professional behavior of an employee of Riot. This treatment has not only put me in great financial and emotional difficulty, but has also ruined my passion for a company that I had been putting myself into fully.
I was informed for months that I would be employed at Riot, then I was not even given a real explanation nor the formality of a phonecall when that opportunity was taken away from me. As this would have been my professional job, I am not receiving unemployment and spent the money I had saved up during my internships and previous jobs on moving to Santa Monica, which has put me in an extremely difficult financial position. While the hardship of my position due to this situation is distressing, that I was treated so poorly and unprofessionally makes this situation truly painful.

idk seems like a big miscommunication, and it sounds like they were very terrible/rude/shitty in the way they handled it, but even then if you were subcontracted out... idk how much of a case you would have had in court?
seems like someone was doing a favor, and then something happened so that they were no longer interested in making sure you received what was offered to you by said person.

Probably related to Serif, her then boyfriend (I believe he worked for Riot and probably gave her the leg up). He left the company, for whatever reason, and things just went to the shit probably.

They had 100% offered me full time employment for 3 months as a contractor. The only thing left was to finish my paperwork on my first day.
This wasn't a "favor." I was qualified for the position, I did 5+ hours of interviews and had a lunch with my supervisor in addition to those interviews (because he couldn't make them). Certainly, my connections there helped me get my foot in the door, but, after that, it was my own performance and qualifications that got me the job offer.
I did not receive an offer from a singular person, I received a formal offer and employment package from Riot Games, the company.

Pure Speculation, completely made on assumptions, this is just what I think might have happened. Because businesses generally dont have you sign a contract, and wait for you to move, to try to tear up that contract, cause that is HUGELY illegal, and will result in a GIANT lawsuit.
I cant imagine, that they offered you a position, you signed a contract, and once you moved they told you there was no position for you.
It sounds like someone said "Come to Cali, we'll get you a job at Riot" and then you moved, signed a lease, and that person/people couldnt deliver.
Also Sidenote: I dont know how its disturbing to know that people arent interested in hiring people who have a history of seeking legal action against their employers.
No matter how you look at it there is no reason that something like this should be ignored.
A. Person who sought action against the company was innocent. (Best case scenario). At the VERY best, you know that this person is willing to become a GIANT problem if you somehow offend or piss them off, even unintentionally.
B. The Person who sought action against the company was actually a problem. (Worst case scenario). This person is just a tantrum throwing, whistle blowing person who cant cut it/handle being a part of your industry, and is more than happy to go from annoyance to major issue.
C.The Person who sought action against the company is just high maintenance. (Every scenario). There is no positive way to look at the person who pursued legal action. Why couldnt that person get along like the other 100000 employees? Why is this the only person having this problem?
This isnt saying that this is the scenario, but as someone who is part of the hiring/firing process and one of the Higher up members of the company at which i work, this is pretty standard across ALL industries.
Nobody wants a high maintenance employee. Nobody wants to let in a potential problem. We want sheep who can get along with everything/everyone who bring the least risk possible.
and there will always be people who can do the job just as well, while remaining a non-problem.

After learning ***** had left Riot, I contacted *** on April 20th, inquiring how to proceed with my employment. He replied to me that he would be handling my employment and that I would receive my paperwork the next week.
A week later, I had still not received the paperwork and I sent him an e-mail reminder, to which he replied the paperwork would come soon. A week after that (May 3rd), I had still not received any paperwork and e-mailed him again, to which I received no reply. While the last message I had received from him stated " I'm not sure what happened but I apologize. I'll email someone now and make sure you get squared away," I was informed by a member of the hiring staff that, in fact, *** had not signed the paperwork required and they were waiting on him to give me my paperwork. While I understand if there was some other reason he did not wish to sign my paperwork or if he forgot to sign a document, I found it unprofessional that, not only did he not keep me informed of the progress, but he also did not reply to two of my e-mails (one on May 3rd and one on May 6th) inquiring about the paperwork that I had been supposed to receive two weeks earlier.
On May 20th, I restated my ideal start date to be June 1st and *** confirmed this date on May 21st. However, *** contacted me on May 25th asking to speak with me by phone on May 29th, I told him I would be free to talk all day. I did not receive a call nor e-mail on May 29th. I received my final employment papers on May 30th from ****** and e-mailed *** to inform him of the papers and that I had not received a call from him.
He e-mailed late on May 30th informing me that the offer of employment was being retracted and gave no clear reasoning as to why. Note that this was less than 48 hours before my start date, well after I had committed to Riot Games by halting my pursuit of other jobs and moving to Santa Monica, even signing a one year lease. He said he would call me the next week to explain why the position was suddenly taken away from me. I agreed to the phonecall, but I received no future contact from him. It has been over a month and I still have not received an explanation as to why I was lead on only to have the position taken away from me in the last second.
I am shocked and appalled that this would be the professional behavior of an employee of Riot. This treatment has not only put me in great financial and emotional difficulty, but has also ruined my passion for a company that I had been putting myself into fully.
I was informed for months that I would be employed at Riot, then I was not even given a real explanation nor the formality of a phonecall when that opportunity was taken away from me. As this would have been my professional job, I am not receiving unemployment and spent the money I had saved up during my internships and previous jobs on moving to Santa Monica, which has put me in an extremely difficult financial position. While the hardship of my position due to this situation is distressing, that I was treated so poorly and unprofessionally makes this situation truly painful.

I was qualified for the position, I did 5+ hours of interviews and had a lunch with my supervisor in addition to those interviews (because he couldn't make them). Certainly, my connections there helped me get my foot in the door, but, after that, it was my own performance and qualifications that got me the job offer. I did not receive an offer from a singular person, I received a formal offer and employment package from Riot Games, the company.

Because, at the time of signing the lease, Serif had fulltime employment that was more than enough to support both of us. Not to mention, the 3 month contract was a "trial" period. And you can't really get a lease for less than a year in Santa Monica.

I may be able to build an app with a lot of time, but it would unlikely pay for itself and I cannot hire a programmer with the appropriate skills to advanced beyond that level.

I feel like they were legitimate complaints that could easily come up. It is clear the treatment was poor and it seems unfair that Riot can hide from repercussions of their poor behavior through paperwork. It is something I can legally share and feel fine doing so.

unless there is something on those emails or contracts that sya dont share, it's probably legally fine and yeah they are valid complaints.
my point is, fair or not, your web presence is a thing that a lot of companies care about today, and this would unfortunately probably paint you as someone who is gonna rush to their computer to complain about shit at work. some places are really uptight about that stuff
basically, why put something out there that can possibly be found by hr when youre interviewing elsewhere

I've had to fire someone before because of the way they talked about our company on facebook. Essentially it's the same thing, but, of course, you did not have the job. You may try to get another job in the field and someone from Riot could be in contact with them and say, "Hey, maybe it's best to over look her. She's not worth the trouble she could bring."
