Another day of TheCore and I'm feeling more confident. I'm starting to integrate movement into macro now and I'm still holding a 120ish apm. But these actions are becoming more effective now. Taking just a second to hotkey the units after production into good control groups, really has helped me understand my feelings on army control.

TheCore Kata
Beginners Level: Army Production Kata
  • 10 times of:
    Build Zealots, assign to melee group
  • repeat for the rest of the units


After I was done with that, I started practicing controlling the armies with these control groups. I'm starting to formulate Katas such as Send in melee, send in stalkers, send in storms and the like. Right now I don't have much to post on it as I'm learning but just doing some unrefined Katas has given me control.

The time it takes to learn during play has made my macro not as tight. But each successive game is getting better.

One pain point I'm having right now is remembering to properly setup all of the camera positions. I still feel like I'm making good progress in my learning and having everything bound properly is allowing me to think differently about the game. Still no laddering yet, It feels like that may be a few weeks away from me at this point.

I think p90x would be better practice for sc than what you're doing. :\

I think focused meditation would be better practice, but there's no evidence for it being useful here. It's sad to see someone criticizing vaguely without offering a valid counter position. "Hey that's a bad way to do it. "Why? "Because. I don't do it like that."

What you're doing is an interesting experiment, good luck!

There's a blog about doing yoga already for warming up. Supposedly it increases your avg apm, and clears up your mind to think better...

I'm all for meditation and mindfulness practice to get in the zone. If I do that more perhaps I'll blog about that.

I'm doing this for one specific reason, I feel like I have reached my limits with my current mechanics and hotkey setup. I've done some coaching with the higher levels and they say my macro is fine, until I have to do both army control and macro. Then I fall apart. I'm not able to execute what I would like to do because I either mishit the hotkey or have the hotkey bound in inconsistent ways. With my camera hotkeys on the function keys, I rarely had time to remember to go press them.

I've played enough fighting games to know that you have to have a button setup that works for your brain. Moving my pinky over to ctrl every warp in cycle would make me lose my finger positioning. That hasn't been an issue yet for me with the grid.

Ultimately, I hope to show that the most important thing you can do when you are in a rut it to shake up something and try to start learning in a new way.

Have you tried using your wrist for the ctrl key? It keeps your hands over the keyboard, and it's fast. Repetition does make improvements, but why don't you just keep playing some one better than yourself, and keep practicing the same opening build vs him/her. This will put you at a disadvantage, but if you can get to a point, where you can beat some one better than you consistently, when they're using a better build than you, then it means that you're kind of far better than them. Also practicing the same build over and over again in the same match up will help your mechanics out more, as long as you're focusing on playing your best. IMO, the hotkeys are fine the way they are. People were playing with 400-500 APM in broodwar, so I don't see why changing them would make a huge difference. There are better guides on how to practice I think in the broodwar section. They're kind of old, but I know there's one about how the progamers would practice.
