Why say GLHF?

So for a few years now this has always bothered me, why do we say it when it's lost it's meaning and should we say it anymore.

GLHF or HFGL if you have never seen it means "Have Fun Good Luck" which used to be a polite greeting to your opponent in the beginning of internet gaming.

In more modern times the gaming scene has become well more open to things like this.

+ Show Spoiler +

I'm sure you've all met him/her the internet badass 12 year old who has no respect for anyone and has probably had sex with your mother.

At the same time the meaning and respect between players has broken down and GLHF has become a reason for people to rage at someone who doesn't say it back to them.

I admit I normal don't say it and I also tend to have my status set to busy so I don't see the messages till I'm back in the lobby for long enough to notice them.

However with HOTS I had myself on online and well after a bad 1v1 game where I gave up pretty quickly to a 1 base all in the guy instantly rage messaged me to tell me what a terrible player I am because I didn't say it back to him

Now since it was meant to be a greeting to show respect would it not be reasonable to create a new greeting that isn't lost to abbreviation or used for people to flame others for not using.

So why do you guys do if you don't say it and what would you suggest to be a better greeting?

Personally I just like saying hi or dancing my workers about in amusing aways when I scout their base as well it's fun.

So, you made a thread about 1 dude who messaged you after a game?

Anyway, its just a greeting.

I do it and try to converse with the player since it makes me more likely to recognize the fact that it was their skill and not imbalance

Great thread. I think this might make it two the second page!

Saying GLHF is the equivalent of offering your hand for a handshake before a competition. You do not always have to shake hands, but if one person puts his hand out and your ignore/reject him you are an asshole.

So basically your an ass.

It has become a sign of good manner, that should be enough. It's a few characters and it shows that you are willing to lose a few actions that don't matter to acknowledge that your opponent is an actual person with thoughts and feelings, and not saying it implies the opposite, even if you are well meaning.

I think it's a nice gesture that you don't necessarily have to say, but if your opponent says it why not return it. If someone rages at you for not saying it they are dumb and just ignore them.

It doesn't bother me when they say it to me because I just type glgl back or something. It really pisses me off when they initiate glhf then by the end of a game they say how bad I am and how I suck despite me winning the game (I never cheese or proxy rush).

To show your intentions. If you do not want your opponent to have "good luck" and "have fun", then why say it? I tell my opponent "have fun" every game because that is what I want, for both him and me. I would never say "glhf" because that would imply that I wanted him to have good luck. Luck has no relation to skill, it is merely coincidence. It actually makes skill less significant. The less skill there is in the game, the less I personally enjoy the game.

Saying stuff like that also makes the game much less serious. There is no point in taking a game played for enjoyment to be taken seriously. That is usually counter-productive. I like my games competitive, but not serious. Ya know?

I always say glhf or hi or greetings and i expect the same from my opponent otherwise it just feels like i'm playing against something faceless and fake as if i was playing vs the A.I.

Also i always say gg or wp at the end no matter what(even if i am really mad).
All I do is Stim.

I only say "Have fun" because I can only hope they will have fun dying.

why not say it.

I do sometimes prefer not to return the glhf when I'm in a shitty mood or just don't want to type anything, in which case some people think I'm hella bm. F those guys.

I'd rather look at SC2 as a sort of gentleman's sport such as tennis or golf instead of something rowdy like baseball or American football. I think saying glhf and gg are part of keeping it that way and showing a mannered environment, even if it isn't meant. I guess my thoughts on it kind of also tie in with my beliefs from the thread about people booing in SC2, there is a certain type of conduct I would like to see in SC2 and I try my best to stick to that, and I am happy when others do too.

Why do you fucking say hello to someone on the street when they say hello and wave at you? Are you really debating the merit of greeting somebody when you join a game with them?

Do you do this for everyone you see when you walk down the street?

My point was ask has it lost it's meaning because we do just say it to everyone and if it has what could it be changed to to regain it's meaning.

I'm all for greeting people in games but I don't feel people should flame for it because you don't do it.

You can't invent a new one because even if it'd become popular, it would still become the new "glhf". Besides, why not put something like a smiley, for example "hi, gl hf! " or engage in some small conversation where you ask where he comes from etc.

I totally disagree with the premise that because we say something a lot or all the time that it losses meaning. If you personally don't mean it, then don't say it. I always say "gl hf" because I mean it, I almost always say gg (even if I loose to some random cheese) the only times I don't is when I'm too frustrated by my own play to feel like it was a good game.

I work a job that involves a lot of interactions with people in a drive-through and I was once asked by a co-worker why I always say "have a good day" when I don't mean it. I gave them an odd look and calmly told them that I do always mean it, if someone is super rude or w/e to me then I don't say it. Same thing goes for saying 'Good Morning' or 'Hows it going?' The only way these phrases lose meaning is when people say them and they don't mean it, it's not the phrase itself.

In other words personalize and own it, if you wanna come up with something you like better than glhf, do it. There's no reason to worry about what other people think in regards to a greeting like that. If someone rages at you for not saying "glhf" then that's their issue for getting butthurt over nothing.
I can take that responsibility.

I typically don't say glhf at the start or a game, or gg at the end, and I don't think that's bad mannered.

It's a few letters that don't mean anything to me, so I don't see the point.

I never use "gl" but I do "hf" in every game I'm in. Why wishing luck to opponent? No way, we can all have fun but LUCK BELONGS TO ME.

thxbie

When I play a 1v1 game against a person I don't want him to get lucky as this amounts to my own unluck which I certainly don't wish to have. Unless he is a particularly gracious loser I also don't want him to have fun since that usually means you are stopming someone hardcore. In light of all this I believe GLHF to be a hypocritical and rude gesture.

It's just the same thing as saying "hi" in starcraft for me. Just something that seems polite.
