For instance, if Gonzo wanted to get some heavier military hardware, like combat armor, assault rifles, even a rocket launcher; he could just talk to the master at arms and request said arms. They'll likely ask him a few questions, make him sign a couple papers, but at the end of the day not only is he footing the bill, but he is military (scout for 16 years), and thus might need military grade hardware.

Also, technicalities to our arrangement: The ship and i are technically still part of the imperial scouts. However, someone in the bureaucrazy had the genius idea of the following scheme: They allow older scouts to use scout ships in their own business, as long as said business involves scouting things and reporting back to the imperial scouts corps. This way, they don't have to pay me, and they don't have to pay for the ship maintenance (apparently some politicians got really upset about the increasing military spending of the great and bountiful Empire). I am fully responsible for any damage the ship might suffer, and i have to keep it in the same condition i received it in. Technically, they can demand that i and the ship return to active duty at any point they wish.

Your character being good at shooting other ships. Actually, everyone was useful in ship to ship combat except for sir Donald (grumble grumble pay grumble). You missed some screaming and arguing about space physics and space ship positioning, and then we won the space fight against Gary, the rival scientist. They surrendered and we moved in to board. Then as airlocks touched, a grenade was hurled in our direction. I'm not sure if I'm going to use my high initiative to simply say "I told you this was a bad idea", try to close the door or perhaps some crazy self sacrificing dexterious maneuver. We'll see next time we play, which is on Saturday again.

And yes, i might have slightly geeked out there about 0g physics. Related: I have thought a bit about our space combat. At 15Mm distance, light will take roughly 0.1s for a round trip, meaning we must basically aim on 0.1 s old data, since our main source of intel is LIDAR. Now, at the speeds we are talking about, we obviously need not only positional data, but also trajectories, because everything moves so fast related to everything else that positional data alone is utterly useless. Assuming at least one ship is interested in actually fighting, that means that that ship would be pulsing LIDAR pretty regularly to keep track of the enemy movement, but i have no idea what frequency would be reasonable. To not get hit, we need unpredictable movement, meaning our previous trajectory might as well be 0 because a known straight movement is easily predictable. Now, if the direction of thrust is not detectable at distance, we can obviously work with that. However, they might be able to tell in which direction our ship is facing due to our silhouette on their LIDAR. From the picture we have, i am guessing our ship is roughly 50m long, and if we assume that their computers take a few moments to produce a firing solution, we may have 0.3-0.5 seconds to randomly accelerate to make hitting us harder in between shots. Obviously, in that time we can cover a distance of s=0.5*a*t². So if we have, say, 0.5s, and want to cover at least a ships width in some random direction, we would require an acceleration of ~400m/s², or 40g. I am pretty confident that our space engines can deliver that. So Yay, we can dodge shots! Also, we apparently have inertial dampeners, since we are not splattered across the deck. Different choices of parameters might only enable us to partially move our ship out of the way, but of course the accuracy of the LIDAR would also be interesting. I should probably avoid thinking about this in the future, and try to think in traveller physics instead. Also, does the Imperial Navy have the concept of price money, similar to the british royal navy? Basically, if a military ship captures an enemy vessel, the crown buys that vessel at a reasonable price to encourage that sort of behaviour, and that money than gets spread among the crew of the capturing vessel? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prize_money
