Hello TL! Welcome to another addition of Food Porn!.
Today, we're featuring....
Bourbon! Ginger! and Chicken! Huzzah~
It's a diablo theme! :'D
INGREDIENTS
- salt
- pepper
- 1 teaspoon of thyme
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 1 tablespoon of water (not shown)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of chopped ginger
- 6 cloves of garlic
- 1 cup of bourbon*
- 1 cup of quinoa
- 1/2 lb of french green beans
- 1 lb of chicken breast
- OPTIONAL: chopped green onions
PROCEDURE Prep work should take about 20 minutes. Idle time will be at least 1 hour (for marinating). Cook time should be about 1 hour and 20 minutes. This will make 2 servings.
- Finely mince your garlic. Reserve half of the garlic for the beans.
- Combine bourbon, garlic, and ginger in a bowl.
- Add salt, pepper, and thyme to the mixture.
- Pour over chicken and allow chicken to marinate for at least 1 hour (over night is even better) in the fridge.
- Remove marinated chicken from the fridge.
- Preheat oven to 375° F (190° C).
- Place chicken and marinade in a baking dish.
- Bake chicken for 55 minutes.
- Set oven to broil or change the oven temperature to 500° F (260° C)
- Allow chicken to brown under the broiler for 5 minutes.
- When chicken is done, remove from oven and let cool slightly.
- Set 2 cups of water to boil in a pot.
- Add quinoa and a pinch of salt.
- Reduce heat to medium and cover with a lid. Quinoa should take about 15 – 20 minutes to cook.
- Place green beans in a skillet on medium heat.
- Add garlic, salt and pepper to the green beans. Add 1 tablespoon of water and set heat to low.
- French green beans should take about 5 minutes to cook.
- Plate chicken, quinoa and French green beans.
- OPTIONAL: Add chopped green onions to garnish.
- Eat!
And this is what you get:

Thanks for reading TL :D and happy holidays and such. <3
PER SERVING: ~613 calories 1 serving is: 1/2 lb of chicken 1/4 lb of green beans 1/2 cup of qunioa 1/2 of the marinade + Show Spoiler +1lb of chicken = ~500 calories 1/2 lb of green beans = ~136 calories 1 cup of quinoa = ~222 calories 3 cloves of garlic = 12 calories TOTAL: 870 calories
marinade*: 1 cup of bourbon = ~560 calories 2 tsp of honey = ~128 calories 1/2 tbs of ginger = ~12 calories 3 cloves of garlic = ~12 calories TOTAL: 712 calories ADJUSTED TOTAL (the 1/2): 356 calories
*this is assuming that you only really consume about 1/2 of the marinade since most of it just kind of sits around in the baking dish and doesn't adhere to the chicken. (356 + 870)/2 =613
edit: fixed a typo T___T edit2: As request, here's the rough "guestimate" of calories. will add the nutrition part later D: edit3: changed the calc a bit. rather overestimate than underestimate, i guess! edit4: I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO MATH. Revised the calorie count again!

Dear god that looks amazing.
|
oh my goodness. food porn indeed. i've got some chicken thighs and spices, i am definitely making this tonight. i'll replace the green beans with some other veggies that i have and the quinoa with rice.
|
Bourbon chicken is already delicious, and with the addition of some flair in that ginger, I bet this is bomb as hell. Will definitely make, though I'm concerned people will think the name is less a reference to Diablo and more a reference to the after effects of consuming a bit too much delicious chicken
|
That looks sooo delicious. I would die for one of these, right now. Well done.

Would be cool if you'd add nutritional values info for the meal.

That is something I can try doing, though most of the nutritional values will be very very roughly estimated. D:
I did a quick search and here's the rough estimated nutritional values:
PER SERVING: ~494 calories
1lb of chicken = ~500 calories 1/2 lb of green beans = ~136 calories 1 cup of quinoa = ~222 calories 3 cloves of garlic = 12 calories TOTAL: 670 calories
marinade*: 1 cup of bourbon = ~1120 calories 2 tsp of honey = ~128 calories 1/2 tbs of ginger = ~12 calories 3 cloves of garlic = ~12 calories TOTAL: 1272 calories ADJUSTED TOTAL (the 1/4): 318 calories
*since you don't necessarily eat the entire marinade, I had to really super "guestimate" the actual calories -- I would say you maybe consume 1/4 of the actual marinade since most of the marinade just falls off the chicken during the cooking process.
edit: fail, forgot to calculate nutrition -__-!! I'll add that to the main post when I have a bit more time to research. D:

I think I might do some experimenting and replace a decent portion of my rice with quinoa instead.
|
Kier, you have ruined my life. I have no interest in women or men anymore. Only food.
|
Wait, does that say that one cup of Bourbon is 1120 calories? wtf...
According to google, an ounce of bourbon is 70 calories, so an 8 ounce cup would be 560 calories. Why is it doubled?
|
Looks awesome.
But isn't that an awfull lot of garlic?

I'll re-adjust the numbers when i am home Thanks for the catch!
edit: Realized the serving size is 2oz.. so 2oz = 140 I need to math better :'D

But isn't that an awfull lot of garlic? I'm a little biased, so I typically put a lot of garlic. However, since a good portion of it is in the marinade, most of the garlic will end up sitting on the bottom of the roasting pan.
I also like really garlically veggies. D: Please feel free to scale back the garlic though!

I would not use that particular brand of bourbon for cooking.
Otherwise, sounds fantastic.

What kind of bourbon do you suggest?
I know nothing about alcohol, so I just got the cheapest. D:

I'm quite interested in this question about the bourbon aswell! I usually don't have bourbon at home (like american stuff aka Johnny Walker), i do have irish stuff will that do?
As always your blogs are fantastic!

Looks amazing.
But Makers Mark is awful (maybe it tastes good in food i dunno, but on its own ugh)
|
Wow... half a pound of chicken per person?
Regarding the alcohol; don't waste your money on expensive brands for cooking, whether it's wine or bourbon.
|
Mouth watering. I'm so hungry now, damn you

I really disagree with that statement. Don't know about the bourbon but if you make a sauce with red wine for example, the quality/taste of the wine makes quite a difference. Cheap wine can have to much acid or way too much sugar. It doesn't need to be really fancy stuff, but the cheapest wine can ruin a nice meal quite a bit.

Looks tasty Your pictures are always so nice!

That chicken looks too good to be true.
|
mmmm... looks delicious.
...so what's quinoa? o_O
|
holy balls this looks good. Definitely going to try this recipe sometime. Probably just use jasmine rice instead of quinoa though haha.

Quinoa is a type of grain. It's pretty light and fluffy with a mild taste. :D

Bourbon is kentucy whisky, it usually taste like brown sugar, maple syrup, dark fruits, dark chocolate, spices like nutmeg and cinnamon and things like that. Johnny Walker is scotch (from scotland) and it probably wouldnt be good for this recipe because it has a peat flavour. Irish whisky tastes more of green fruit, almonds and soft floral things, so that wouldnt work either.
Heres a few suggestions for bourbon brands, in order of cheapest to most expensive:
1-Evan Williams, its got a sugary almost bubblegum sweetness to it. 2- Jim Beam black , its very rich and full flavoured. 3- Woodford reserve. Its pretty expensive, maybe a dumb idea.
I would try it with Jim Beam black. And hey if you dont use it all you can mail the leftovers to meeeeee! lol jk

Hmm Seems tasty, when I stop sc2 (thus having more timexD) will browse your blog more:p What's the theme of your wordpress by the way?

Nice simple/simpler recipe than many others I've seen you make.
Although it's quite expensive with the bourbon marinade.
I'm wondering, what made the chicken go red like that?

It's the bourbon caramelizing.
