So I used to ladder on SC2 religiously and went from Bronze to Diamond so far with Zerg and with Random as well. However, I stopped playing for a while due to the fact that I was becoming increasingly frustrated with myself and the game. Seeing how other games gave me that same feeling but less of a reward, I recently have decided to return to SC2.

Now that I'm back, it's super hard to become a solid player again, even at Diamond level. I think I'm something like 2-8 with Terran on my Random account, and somewhere near 40% win with my Zerg account. I enjoy the feel of Terran a lot, but they seem to be lacking something recently.

TLDR: Super hard to get back into SC2 after months without playing

Any tips from people that have left the game for some decently long period of time and decided to come back and play again?

Thanks.
InseKt

Howdy
I came back after a long break.
I used to be a mid-masters random player. I quit playing because of work over 4 months ago.
I came back because of sick leave (my throat is so fucked up I can hardly speak) so I've seen how my game has deteriorated because of the lack of practice.
I've also noticed how I'm increasingly raging more with each loss, LOL.
What I've been doing to cope with the frustration is twisting a pillow.
No, really.
I've been playing with a pillow at my lap. It makes it so much more comfortable... And in between every game, I twist it. It releases tension and frustration.
I also play with relaxing music. Some chill-out or classical music (I recommend TLO's classical music playlist at Grooveshark) helps a lot.
And also, when you're in a losing streak, get out of the game and do something else. My rule of thumb is: If I lose 5 games in a row, I declare a "GTFO" moment and go for a snack, a coffee, to read a book, for a walk, to jog, or something else. Helps me keep my mind away from the bad stuff happening in game.

Hope it helps you too, man

I've worked on developing the Artosis motivation, "I have to play more, because I know I'm better than this!" sort of thing, but it takes time. After a long break (I've had several periods of skipping 1~2 months for exams or projects) I find that I just need to slowly re-scale my play, schedule at least 3 games a day, and slowly increase if time permits.

I'd say UmbraaeternuS has some of the best solutions overall though, listening to music to help ease stress, and being able to walk away to avoid frustration etc. You play better when your mind is clear.

Good luck InseKt, kick some butt!

When i was coming back to playing (for my eventual surge to masters from diamond), I started out each day playing customs as Terran (i play Z). no pressure, just try and play. then after a few warm ups do a custom as your main race (or if you random then i guess one of each?) then start laddering. just get that warmup in before you go up against good opponents.

I've never been away from the game for an extended period of time per say, I have gone a long time without playing but I always try and watch some games/streams so I can keep up with the current metagame and what not.

That being said, I think just playing a lot and working on things you think are cool, or you've seen before is great. One of the things I'm working on now is basically consistently drop in 2 or more places at once without dying.

Coming back to this game sucks ass. I stopped playing in April because I didn't feel like playing SC2 after working on custom SC2 maps for hours. Eventually I bought an EU account and played some games on that. That was pretty fun because it wasn't placing me against the same people I was playing against before I stopped. Now I am trying to play on NA again. I was in Diamond before and even though I have won 4 games out of the last 32 games it still just puts me against more diamond people. TT lost all 12 games played today.

Edit: Finally won a game after switching to EU

Options:
1) Don't come back to the game at all:D
2) Play only with friends in SC2
3) Play only custom games in SC2
4) Go back to laddering and suffer more!

I picked option 1 by the way, game is too much for brain

This game isn't hard, it's the real time strategy genre that is hard. This isn't one of the harder RTS games, neither in terms of strategy nor execution.

What you're doing is like saying Marvel vs Capcom 3 is hard. It's only harder than non-fighting games. Compared to other fighting games, it's not hard.
If it's stupid but it works, then it's not stupid* (*Or: You are stupid for losing to it, and gotta git gud)

I stopped playing for like 3 months and when I came back it was a whole new metagame because the queen buff happened.
What I did was laddering until I got back to my ancient MMR.
So yeah, just play the game :D.

Good Guy InseKtSC2,

Writes 6 sentences. Adds a TLDR.
A good way to threaten somebody is to light a stick of dynamite. Then you call the guy and hold the burning fuse up to the phone. "Hear that?" you say. "That's dynamite, baby."

I had an opposite experience. After not playing for more than a year. I could still remember my most used builds and my mechanics were almost the same. I was definitely a bit rusty and the overall skill level increased but I only really dropped from high master to mid master or so.

When i stopped playing it was really difficult to get back into things because I told myself I wanted to work primarily on mechanics and my foundation of play rather than what I had been doing (basically 1-1-1ing all day and telling myself it was working on mechanics and micro and scouting and unit positioning and unit interaction and decision making all together, which is was) and I was working on a more macro-centric style.

The thing I think that helped me most was forcing myself to watch my replays after each game, and forcing myself to stretch after each game.

I just use it as a comfort thing, I don't always use it though, but I have to admit it's nice.
