I wondered across my mind what the two games (Dota/Dota2 and Starcraft 2) would look like if

our beloved SC2 lead game designer swapped places with Dota's very own curator

I feel like both communities seem to have held a sense of insight on their relative game developers at this point (even though David Kim is the one that leads the balance design in SC2) and this blog isn't really in trying to impose any flammatory behavior from either communities, just a food for thought. :D

I dont want to see destructible rocks in Dota T_T.

In all seriousness, I think that the unit design in SC2 would change from a passive to an active design, and DotA vice versa.

No game of Dota would ever actually finish due to no reconnect support.

Dota would be horrible, sc2 would be much more micro intensive through abilities. Pretty much that

i wish both worked together on both games, because they have to fight together against the evil casual game that is LoL.

It's as simple as that really, the game developped by Valve is gonna be great because they are smart people and the game developped by Blizzard is gonna be really bad and aimed at milking their customers with as little effort as possible on their own.

There are two possible reasons :

1) The developers and programmers are bad and not talented. (But their older games were really good so I don't think that is the explanation.)

2) Noone is working on Sc2 since it doesn't bring in as much money as WoW and what their future MMORPG will. (This is probably the true explanation and I will try to explain why below.)

First you need to understand that if the team working on Sc2 is a really small team, it is because Activision-Blizzard is using its ressources on games that earn them the most money; starcraft doesn't represent anything income wise compared to WoW and a game based on a subscription service. (They are developing a new MMORPG called TITAN and it is where all their budget is going imo.)

So basically they just reassigned most of the original team that created Sc2 to other departments and now they only do the minimum to sell the expansions, with no aim at all to make a PERFECT* game out of Starcraft 2. That is what every single capitalist company in the world would do : calculate and look for the maximum profitability (reduce the production costs as much as possible and make sure people will still buy their games).

And all they needed to do to make sure people would buy the extensions was to make the original game crappy and cut all the good features from it so they could add them later. They knew that people would still buy the original game blindly regardless of all the things cut and missing because of the notoriety the starcraft franchise gained with broodwar and because of the immense popularity and success of their previous title. Of course people quickly realised how bad the UI was and started asking questions regarding the features that disappeared but in the end everyone bought Sc2, including myself, and Blizzard never actually gave any explanations.

Now just compare this to what Valve is doing with Dota 2 and you will start noticing that my statement was actually more than fair based on how things are NOW. (Blizzard did a great job on wow vanilla / tbc, Wc3 and Bw but ever since they are part of Activision all their games are bad.)

*This is where the difference is between Valve and Blizzard, Valve actually cares about its community and is aiming for perfection, Blizzard doesn't care and is aiming for profit.
