There are stories* and a lot of poetry and literature (the Chinese know their literature dam fucking well) about the moon, among the things people do is to "appreciate the moon" and there's even a phrase for it (赏月).

So the moon is pretty important in Chinese culture so people even pray/pay homage to it.
My father told me, back then, they were doing the same thing to, paying homage to the moon. However, after the Apollo 11 landing, he said that some were telling everyone to stop praying to the moon:
