I started with 3 and loved it. Played 1 a ton until I entered a cave and my files were deleted. Skipped ahead to 8 and loved it. Skipped ahead to 10, played it for about six hours before I lent it to a friend and never saw it again. Hated 11, loved 12, never played 13.
Two years ago for the first time I played and beat 7. Thought it was terrible. Not a bad game, just didn't come close to living up to all the hype I've been hearing for the last fifteen years.
Now two years since my last FF game, I am playing FF9. I recently purchased a PS3 and while I was at Electronic Boutique I spotted a copy of FF9 for only four bucks. I figured it was worth a try for four bucks.
And I have to say that I'm really enjoying the experience so far. There's a lot of charm in this game that I never noticed before. Earlier when I first played it, I was so turned off by the fact that the main character was some sort of monkey man. And he was like twelve or something. Ugh, I cannot stand children in the least, and role playing as one of them fills me with distaste. And the love interest between Zidane and Garnet seems immature to say the least.
However if I blank out the monkey man and his teen queen, then the rest of the game is actually quite enjoyable. I'm hooked on the story, I'm loving the "equip items to learn skills" aspect, and the supporting cast is, at least so far, really fleshed out.
In the past whenever a Final Fantasy thread popped up, it would inevitably lead to people posting stuff like X>Y>Z>>>>>>>>>>>>>>W.
Whenever someone slotted in FF9 in one of the left hand spots, I always laughed at them. I mean, come on, he's a damn monkey. Who was that monkey from Babar? Zephyr? That's who he reminds me of.
But now I can see why people enjoy this game. And so I apologize to all you monkey lovers out there.
Edit: As aforementioned it's Zidane, not Tidus.

Many people have tainted views on these games thanks to childhood experiences. I have the fondest memories of playing FF4, 5, and 6, because those games dominated play-time in my early teens. Not to say these games aren't good, they are just never as good as one remembers.

It wasn't Tidus in FF9 :p
The fact that the main character is a 'monkey man' is such a small portion of why I couldn't get into FF9 despite liking 8, 7, etc.
In general, everyone should stop criticizing each other for which FF's they liked or didn't like and just play the ones they like and discuss the ones they like with other like-minded people.
One problem with going back and playing old games after hearing about them for '15 years' is that there is a big time dependency on what makes a game good. Some FF's for their time offered things that couldn't be found anywhere else, and now look like nothing special. Some games have qualities that are timeless.... one game-type isn't necessarily better than the other.

There is an amazing reason for Zidane being a monkey but that involves spoilers although looking at the cast there are only 2 humans in the entire main party and even then one of them is very questionable...

7 is my favourite FF, and imo along with 6 are the game(s) that age the best with time, at least among the FF titles.
The materia system is boundless.. Though i might agree that 7's charm lies a lot in exploring the full depth of gameplay, a straight run through to the endgame and nothing else might not be as enjoyable (pure speculation, i ve nvr done that).

100% unbiased rankings: 6>7>9>>>5>8>1>4>>>>>>>X
I heart 9's ability system. Having a set number of points that could be allocated to appropriately-priced abilities is such an improvement over stuff like 2 imba relics or 1 limiting accessory. It let me give my characters themes and stuff too (ie putting all killers on Freya and thinking that made her badass idk). I also appreciate that at times you're forced to choose between using a strong piece of equipment and one you could learn from. Awesome game and glad you're enjoying it.
|
9 has always been my personal favorite. loved it from start to finish. I liked how the opening was somewhat believable (minus all the crazy technology and stuff). Just a group of thieves who parade as an acting troupe to disguise their thievery, so cool. That was like my dream job when I was 14.
|
FF9 is my favorite. Most cohesive story and characters, superb music and I didn't mind the art style either.
Combat felt more varied than 7 or 8 as well, which had every character feel the same way.
|
Did you guys know that Final Fantasy 9 had a multiplayer component? Its true!
|
I enjoyed 9 quite a bit, and only recently played it. For me the best FF I've played lately is the International Zodiac Job System Updated FF12 version on ps2 emulator

Why are you apologizing? It's just opinions and I think it's silly to criticize or judge someone on liking a game you never even played in the first place. At least you finally gave the game a shot and I'm not going to sit here and criticize you for liking it.
As for FFVII, I guess you have to put everything into context. For the time the game was very innovative for a console game.
I thought the characters were well developed and the story had it's moments.

Who is human besides *rattle rattle* Steiner?

You could argue for Garnet, I guess, but then you have to include Eiko as well.

Garnet / Eiko are summoners
Amarant is technically human

If you can look past his weird design I think Zidane is probably the best FF main character. He's not a mopey jackass like a lot of them (and when he does get like that he has a pretty damn good reason for it) and he fits the lighthearted adventuring theme a lot of that game has perfectly

Eiko isn't human

I played 9 first and it was the first game that made me cry. For whatever reason though I couldn't really get into 7 and played less than a fourth of it.

It took me a long time to really get into IX, because the first disc kind of bored me. I'd take it up and put it down countless times over the years, before finally resolutely giving it a shot 2 years ago. Once the story really got going, it was definitely a fantastic ride. I'd put IX up there among my favorites now (but fuck all y'all haters X is still the best ^^)
|
X > IX > VII > VIII
Those are the four that I initially played. X all the way!!! TIDUS T_T
|
I really enjoyed FFIX. It was my first Final Fantasy that I played by myself throughout the whole game (before then, I used to watch my uncle or brother play). Don't have to apologize, in my opinion, but I'm glad you did.
|
I accept your apology, haha.. but really, IX is amazing. It's one of the few PS1 titles I regularly replay.
|
9 is probably my favorite PS1 FF. I've played through it probably 3 times since I got it at release (a few years between each playthrough of course) and it's just as enjoyable everytime. The whole "learn a skill by using a weapon" system was pretty neat.
I really wish Beatrix was playable though...
|
FF IX is my favorite in the series. Played through it 4-5 times. Absolutely love the characters and story.
|
|
As far as I can tell, the idea of VII being overhyped is true basically because of how much freaking hype it gets. It's a REALLY great game for sure, but the amount of ballyhoo around it is ungodly hehe.
X is pretty good and XIII is the prettiest (derp).
|
FF4 was my favorite SNES ftw!
|
Still need to play IV, V and VI. Won't play X-2(only did for like 30 minutes) and anything after that.
So far VII=IX>>>X>>>>VIII. I-III are too "traditional" to really rate.
|
Kinda surprised to see a lot of ppl prefering 9 over the others... To me it seemed the least fun i've had to play. Sure the combat's system wasn't bad, afterall it was refreshing, but still i prefer the 12's one (too bad it has so many useless gambits, if only they worked a little more on it, it'd have been a pretty good game tbh).
FF6 and FF9 are the only 2 that i've never bothered to finish because of boredom :/ Guess i'm getting too old for those games now...
|
well IX was mostly awesome because of it's nostalgic look and setting imo. The setting was just something different. You were used to something futuristic around that time (VII, VIII and X probably as well?) so IX was something different in that regard. To me that was really the most important difference between those games. And yeah that's completly ignoring game mechanics and stuff.
But yeah it'd probably feel different if you play it as a grown man for the first time as it IS pretty childish compared to the other ones.
|
For me VII > VIII > X > VI >>>> XII >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> XIII (Didn't play the IX )

Dudeeeeeeeee I so much understand you.
FF9 was actually the first I played, so quite naturally it got my spot "best FF game ever".
But damn at first playing with a monkey man...Then the story unfolds and holyshit.
I loved sooo much the story and the medieval world around. Each character's quest for himself was also very touching to me in fact.
Even now, when I am in holiday, I get my very old PSX out of the box, put my FF9 in it and starts the game all over. I think i more or less did that 8 to 10 times, easily.
That's pretty much the same for FF12, even though i found the characters to have much more less personnality.

My CD-1 from FFIX is broken ;( I'd totally love to play it again as well

I loved FFIX so much when I first played it like 10 years ago. Maybe I'll give it another whirl sometime.

Ah, FFIX. Good memories. How far have you gotten so far, OP? Like another poster said, the "monkey thing" does get explained, and honestly, with all the other cutesy/cartoony/silly things in the game, it really kind of fits anyway. Well, in my opinion, at least. However, I must fault you for making me want to replay the game again ^_^

The soundtrack is another great addition to the game. You have such varied tracks like Vamo alla Flamenco, Esto Gaza, You're Not Alone!, Dark Messenger, and of course Song of Memories.

I just made it to fossil roo. The place is damn annoying. I don't use walkthroughs the first time I play a game and I keep getting lost. Also, I'm the type of guy that likes to get everything possible. Like when I did that monster hunt game, I kept reloading 'cause vivi kept winning instead of zidane. So I'm trying to reach every area I can in here, and it's bugging me out.

Ya FF9 was the first FF game I ever played while I was probably 10-12. I never really understood what was happenning besides vaguely remembering Kuja was the bad guy. It's like a lost love to me and I did revisit it 6 years or so later while I woke up secretly at night to play (parents didn't allow me to play on weekends). I didn't finish the game as I probably was distracted with another game soon after.
Just thinking of it makes me feel all warm and nostalgic because of all the time I've spent on it.........
I sure as hell wouldn't even have finished it if I were to play it now.
One thing's for sure, thinking over, I already had a deep passion for music since then. I can't remember the story but I sure as hell remembered the story and spent a lot of time trying to find it back in the limewire days.
Listening to the opening The Place I'll Return To Someday theme after revisiting it after getting a PS2 and never looking back at PS1 games (my brother laughed at me for playing an old game) gave me the same goosebumps as it did now while I'm listening to it. I can imagine the zeppelin thing flying with the title screen in black.............................................. That spanish song during the sword duel... Melodies of Life (Acapella)..... I'm getting transported as I write this
I always whine, while sweating at the piano, about having regretted that my mom didn't get me to learn piano when I was young so that I didn't have to start now but little things like this make me think twice.
I don't know when but I'll revisit it sometime, even if I'm 50. Especially when I'm dying.

Ain't no nostalgia goggles on over here.

I wasn't comparing games because I was too young to know enough. Though I remember mimicking FF8's Lion Heart in class while I was about 13-15 in class and the teacher laughed and asked me what the exciting story was about.
Lion heart was the craziest thing lol FFX moves (didn't finish 7 because my disc was broken) that break 9999 aren't remotely close. I remember laughing so hardly with my brother when we saw that move for the first time because it didn't make sense (SO IMBA). And especially when it deals another 9999 damage after it fell back down hahaha.
Just rewatched it. It felt much longer back then hahaha

Lion Heart was pretty hilariously explosive - FF8 probably had the most visually wild limits of any of the FFs I played.
