First and foremost, my first foray into silver was ultimately not very kind to me. I faced a couple gold league players and they tended to walk all over me. Something about the mid game, whether I don't expand enough early, I don't get upgrades quick enough, or I'm just generally bad at macro -- mid to late game I was getting destroyed. That's demoralizing to say the least. It's hard to win games really early especially against opponents who know how to open play semi-decently.
I decided that I was focusing too hard on learning the strategies and unit compositions of just one race. I think learning the overall mechanics of the game, and the match-ups, would be easier if I switched to random. Since having done so I've gone on a pretty good string of matches. My mid-late game has picked up a bit, and my scouting has been a lot better. My expos are coming around the same time as my opponents, if not earlier, and I'm expanding a bit more aggressively.
I'm 28 and 22 in my last 50 matches in Silver league, but most of my losses are against Gold, and top 8 Gold level players. With that said, in the 7 matches I've played today I'm 6 - 1 and I think all but one have been against Gold or top 8 Gold level players. I've noticed that Gold players tend to proxy rush, or try to all-in fairly frequently and it's really helped me with my early scouting and reactionary abilities.
Oh, so I'm up to a total of 45 wins on the season, 5th in my Silver league with 778 points. Now that the Ladder has been extended I might have a chance to actually reach my goal of becoming Gold before the ladder resets. That would be awesome.
