Social and information technology have allowed us to become connected in ways never before possible to humans. You can chat with a person on the other side of the planet, watch world news from the comfort of your couch and have endless information at the tips of your fingers. Yet, in other ways, technology has decreased our connection with family, our friends and even ourselves.
Our bodies and minds are constantly communicating with us, even if we may not be fully receptive to the information. Hours in front of the computer or television are so mentally stimulating that we often are too distracted to notice our physical and mental state. Those who train their body and mind regularly, such as monks, become more connected to their bodies and more aware of their own mental state. Instead of technology being a barrier of these communications, we could use it to be aware of them. Certainly, we will not all gain the same awareness and control as monks who practice for hours daily. However, we can gain more insight of ourselves.
Technology similarly distances us from those we care about, encouraging the sharing of ideas and information instead of emotions. With typed text becoming our main form of communication, we forget there are breathing, living individuals behind the screen. Tone and sarcasm can be lost, states of being that encourage empathy disregarded and excitement and passion dulled behind the 1s and 0s of our communication technology. We often forget how much we can tell by interacting with a friend in person, how their actions and simply the "feeling" they give off can give us insight about them. We can break through this barrier, though. Using technology, we can share more than simple ideas, we can share our state of mind and body. We can share our spirit, our aura.
It is time we use technology to connect ourselves in ways were have been distracted from. It is time to be aware.
+ Show Spoiler + I wrote this blog because of my work at a start-up company. We are working on cutting edge technology that addresses these issues in super awesome ways, but, unfortunately, I can't talk about our exact designs yet! [website/company name removed as not to be an "advertisement"]

You do know that you have to pay to make an advertisement post on tl right? Other wise its just a ban waiting to happen. Gl with your new job either way.

Technology is evil and is going rise up and kill us all when it develops the intelligence. I'm already building a tree fort, and stocking it with canned goods.

I was unaware a blog like this would be considered an advertisement, especially since I put the only mention of my job in the spoiler. This blog is more because I am very interested in how other people view communication technology right now.
I'll remove my company's name and such for good measure, though.

I don't think in this case there is anything wrong with putting your company name in a blog like this. You aren't saying "HEY GUYS COME BUY MY SHIT" you are a decent contributor to the community, and you are just talking about what you are working on.

Haha, yeah... and we're not even in beta yet, so we really don't have anything up.
If you want to check it out, it's www.oneaura.com .

wow, hippy cyborgs, that's AWESOME!
(I may have slightly misunderstood the website, but I hope not)

Grats on the startup!
Our bodies and minds are constantly communicating with us, even if we may not be fully receptive to the information. As a dancer/engineer, I agree. Building my own hardware startup to deal with this as well. I think the more information our body can transmit to the places where we consume that information, the better. (I'm talking about hardware to measure biometrics in non wizzbang vocab)

how come this blog has no pictures... im so disappointed

Haha, you are actually on a fairly correct track. None of our designs will be implants, but they will give you cyborg-like abilities.

Thank you! :3 It seems like our start-ups may be fairly similar! I'm just our industrial design engineer, so I only deal with getting all of our components into nice housings and fitting them on people in an ergonomic and aesthetic way, but I am amazed by what our EEs and programmers do to get our from-scratch biosensors working!

Here, graduating with QXC. Enjoy your media.

Love the idea, something I think about a lot. I have a degree in both computer science, and also acting... I've lived on both sides of the spectrum, one where it's all about ideas, text, problem solving, logic; and the other where high emotion, desire, physical ability and freedom and human connection are what are treasured most.
I think it's so important not to lose connection with your real human self and with the people around you. Sometimes I have to go and sign up for an acting or singing class just to connect back with reality again after months of working in IT. Yoga's also been great, but I have so little time now with a 3 month old baby
Good luck with your start-up (I have one too, we're developing video games!) but also thanks for sharing that idea.

I know what you mean exactly! I am as much of a "people" person as I am a technology geek.
:D
Admittedly, I just thought about the possible applications our designs could have in conjunction with video games and almost died from excitement about getting close to truly immersive gaming.

I thought riku worked at riot.

wow, you graduated with QXC. Makes me depressed for some reason...maybe it's because you're moving up in life, and you've got a thing you want to do...oh well. insta 5/5 just because you're riku and to fight the insta 1/5s

They retracted the job offer at the last second.
It was unfortunate, but I'm making more money as an engineer.

Ahaha... I have $68k in debt as well, I don't feel like I'm moving up yet! I just don't get homework now!
;p
Thanks, btw.

Okay, lemme guess... some sort of glasses overlay that has short range communication ability, is programmable, and broadcasts/receives 'moods' or other things from other people, and overlays it in a heads up display on your glasses or whatever.
That would be so awesome, if enough people adopted them. Kinda need to get a critical mass of people adopting it if that's the idea....
OH, unless it came with a free app, that was also downloadable and usable on its own just with a smartphone and in conjunction with the glasses (bluetooth) that did the same thing ... communication with other users could possibly be thru bluetooth, but that's pretty close range, OR thru gps, which would broadcast location info to a public database and notify everytime you're close to someone else who is using the app. . .
That must be it
If not, it's a good idea too.

Haha, that sounds way too close to Google Glass! We are going in a different direction! ;p
