So it has been a really long time since I made a new entry mainly because nothing really that extraordinary has happened to me. Just the usual things go to school and hang out. Nothing really worth posting about. But this weekend I am on a 5 day break from school due to a combination of national holiday, school anniversary and my friends having a practice exam. So I decided I would do at least 3 entries this weekend to make up for all the time I have missed. I will do one on Korean food, my trip to jeju island ( even though that happened months ago) and then the last one on just a general update.
So first begin Korean food, Korean food is fucking delicious! Final. /blog.
But seriously I love the food here so much. I eat like a pig here, and still somehow I have managed to lose over 15 pounds. I guess the food is just straight up much healthier than what I was eating in Canada. Even though I would say I eat more fast food here. Also food is ridiculously cheap here so I end up buying a lot of food from stores and restaurants. My favorite food is like Bulgogi 불고기 in a spicier sauce, not sure of the exact name. Probably the thing I hate the most here is either some of the soups I have to eat besides the soups it is probably lotus root, which is probably one of the worst things I have eaten.
So now I will pics of foods then talk about them a little. I could have sworn I had more pics saved on my computer but I have no idea where they are.
First, I guess I will start with my school lunches, mostly they are pretty bad to be honest. But sometimes they can be alright. The school caf is like just out of the movies like you just grab a tray then walk down line and they slop the food on your tray. But sometimes if it is one of your friends giving out the food they will sometimes give you extra if the item they are serving is good. Eating in the caf is cool sometimes it is really quiet as everyone is starving and just wants to eat. But mostly it is funny, copious amounts of food stealing goes down along with messing with other peoples food. And also people share a lot of food and trade stuff they don't like and so on.
So this is like a pretty standard lunch, always there is rice no matter what. Rice is either just white rice or sometimes has beans in it. then usually always a type of kimchi this being the most common type(kimchi is red stuff in top right corner if you didn't know). Kimchi is really good, at first when I came to Korea is really didn't like it but know I usually want to eat it everyday. Same thing goes for rice, need to to eat everyday. The main dish for this lunch was like a pork cutlet, which is pretty good. Probably one of the better lunchs. The soup is some cream based thing and the greens are just greens.
These pictures are of some lunch, those are all pretty typical Korean side dishes And then the other picture is just a mix of main dishes ranging from chicken to seafood and such. Pretty sure this was on Jeju island aswell.
Some like chicken that you mix and cook at your table, is pretty good. Not really sure what the name.
Next is one of my favorite foods here
짜장면(jjajangmyun)!! It is noodles in a black bean with onions or sometimes other stuff mixed in. This is also my favorite type of instant noodle, whenever I can find it. Instant jjajangmyun isn't to bad. I think it is considered a Chinese dish though but whatever.
Next one of my other favorites here is the ramyun.
I pretty much eat this everyday, always with rice after I eat all the noodles to add to the broth. So delicious sometimes add an egg if I want. Like all types although I prefer the non-instant ones where you just add steaming water. Usually taste is a little worse in those one but still delicious.
This was my meal with my host family on Parent's Day.
This was similiar to the chicken thing above except instead of chicken it was octopus. First pic is the octopus then the second is after finished eating all of that you add rice to the left over and the rice becomes ridiculously delicious. Pretty good meal.
Pretty sure this isn't even korean( think japanese) but whatever it was delicious I have no idea what its called but yeah. Like i'm pretty sure it is squid on the inside but not 100% if anyone know please tell me.
So that is pretty much it for all the pics of food I have. But overall Korean food is amazing and I really enjoy it. If anyone has any question or such please ask away, could be about anything doesn't have to be about food.
And finally, Thank you for reading!

Nice. 짜장면 먹고싶어요!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How long have you been in Korea?
|
I'm hungry now gawd damnit
|
the octopus ball thing is called takoyaki
|
Most foreigners I know here love the food, but I gotta say, I absolutely despise 75% of it. Blaargh. Especially kimchi (in all its various forms), how people eat that crap and apparently enjoy it is a mystery to me. Oh well, good for you if you like it!

The noodles in the soybean sauce/paste or w/e is indeed Chinese

Some good Korean food... I would seriously take the school lunch over the fucking food at my university even though its claimed to be #1 in the nation or around there.. I think #3 this year.
|
Even though jjajangmyun is Chinese it is very different from the typical style that is served in Korea. But damn the lunches! I would consider that luxurious compared to the dubious mass-factory produced stuff we consumed before university... Albeit I stopped eating it during high school.
And lotus root has no real flavor, I've personally just started accepting it as another root vegetable alternative.
|
That Takoyaki looks pretty good... mmm
|
I'm going to try and find the courage to try 산낙지 today or tomorrow, I've never eaten octopus before though and I don't know if raw moving pieces are a good start.
|
Yeah Korean food is ridiculously good ^_^
Also you probably lost weight because of all the walking around

I'm a native korean, but to be honest, i really don't like a lot of korean food. the same could be said for a lot of other koreans too. i feel like a lot of foreigners (especially those interested in starcraft) have some kind of fetish about korean food. yeah, you will probably like the bbq we have here, but it's kind of like eating a few tacos and saying that you love mexican food.
nevertheless, there are a lot of korean foods that i do like, but it's not really something to dream or fantasize about

Korean is by far not one of my favorite foods, probably not even top 3. But it is a lot better than i expected. At first I hated things like kimchi and most fish but after being here for a while they grew on me and now I actually enjoy them.

Looks delicious, have been meaning to try. Is there anything you'd recommend to first-timers?

I really have no idea. But you cant really go wrong with any Korean BBQ or most Korean noodle dishes are really good. I just really tried everything at least once then decided what i did and didn't like.
