I never played the first few elder scrolls, but just about everything else you mentioned is good stuff. Gotta throw some love out there for some of my favorites that you missed: - Theme Park (1994) - Command and Conquer (1995) - Heroes of Might and Magic (1996)
I'm sure theres more that I'm forgetting but whatever. You better not miss the BEST GAME OF ALL TIME when you finish part 2 (hint: 1997).

Part 2 is going to be the second half of 1991-1996. Trust me, there's wayyy more missing than those three. But you'll have to wait a few days to see!

I'm not able to read this right now but I like the concept and I look forward to future installments. I didn't list Myst as abandonware, I listed it as a game you should pirate lol. One of the issues with the game is that even though Ubi-soft has repackaged it, they haven't made any updates. To actually get the Myst Masterpiece edition to work you have to have version 2 or earlier of Quicktime installed. It's a bit of a pain in the ass. But Real Myst, the fully 3D remake, isn't Myst IMO. The clicking is part of the true experience. But I'll relist it's steam link for the MasterPiece Edition, in the interest of supporting the industry. I didn't know about daggerfall being freeware, if anyone has a download link let me know please. I apologize for my oversight in the case of Myst. As for Daggerfall the official download is at www.elderscrolls.com/daggerfallThere is also a community supported installer at http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN that comes with additional fixes and quests and a preconfigured DOSBox. As for the other games I will list where to purchase them: Duke 3D Atomic Edition: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/duke_nukem_3d_atomic_editionUltima VII: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/ultima_7_completeUltima VIII: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/ultima_8_gold_editionMasters of Orion (1 and 2): http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/master_of_orion_1_2All the games GOG are DRM free, have unlimited downloads, and come with extras such as manuals, soundtracks, reference cards and other cool stuff. There is currently a weekend sale for the Ultima and Wing Commander series at 50% off.
I've never heard of nor used GOG, what's your experience with it? I have real stranger danger when giving out my credit card to websites. Do they accept paypal?

I think I need to get a good emulator running now.
I'll probably do a blog on using DosBox as well if you're interested.

Excellent blog. The 90's will remain the greatest decade of computer gaming. It's really not just rose coloured glasses and nostalgia that gives these games praise, they are just fucking amazing. A few of these are dated and not worth checking out, but a lot of them are still worth playing today. I was lucky enough at that age to have an uncle who would ship us computer hardware from Hong Kong, and my parents jumped on the internet bandwagon quickly(14.4k modem baby).
I was also lucky enough to be one of the first LPB's in Quake, 5 points for anyone who remembers that term

A) The blog goes from 1991-1996.
B) Even if it went to 1997, you are wrong. Sorry, it's just how it is. When TheToast releases part 2 and this game is declared the greatest game ever to be created, you will see the errors in your ways.

lol.
Won't be getting to 1997 for a while, writing the first two parts alone have taken me probably around 30 hours at least over the past two weeks.

Ahh this brings back so many memories, always loved old pc games when i was a kid. Great write up as well btw, our family had a single pc when i grew up but i always hogged it since my dad would get me floppy games from a local pc shareware store for like 99 cents lol, i miss those days
Some of my favorite and first pcs games I played was:
Duke Nukum (original 1991) Commander Keen series (1990) Hugo's house of horrors! (1990) Kiloblaster (1991-2?)
There was quite a few others but those will forever be burnt into my memory, so many hours of my life wasted replaying those over and over. Oh god i have to go play these again, it's been over 20 years lol
Looking forward to more blogs, it sure blasted me to the past.

How did I miss this blog?! 5/5 good sir, I played every single one of these games although I never did beat myst, I got rather bored of it. My gaming predates this but this was indeed a fun set of years and I wasted much of my life in front of a moniter with friends. Well, wasted is too strong a word because man, the fun had.
