Cool post
Before I left for Japan I would always spar against my friend who was a muay thai, BJJ guy and through that I gained an understand and appreciation for what he practiced and what he could make happen in the ring. I personally practice wing chun (I know I'll get alot of flak for this ) and I could see alot of the similarities in the method I practice and BJJ. The concepts were so similar we pretty much agreed wing chun, or at least the way I practiced, was just stand up grappling lol. Taking away space, positioning and using your full body weight.
As for the art in martial arts or MMA. I think its just about what you are trying to achieve in a fight or in the ring or wherever. Like how Bruce Lee said, you want to express yourself. Really being able to do that though while everything else is going on is exceptionally difficult. For me its about practicing what I enjoy and when in the ring making my opponent play to my strengths while avoiding his.

Cool blog, as always. Makes me interested in BJJ
Did you dad do the TKD part in broken english, Mr. Miyagi style, or was that just how it translates haha

Good read like always!
I took Taekwondo as a child because every other kid around the block did. I stuck around long enough to get 품띠 (I think that's one below Black). I wasn't much of a natural fighter anyway. I don't think I've been in a serious fight that lasted more than a few shoves and punches.
I haven't watched any MMA in a while, but I guess I'll give it another try.

I've never ever ever ever ever ever ever seen a 4-year-old have "talent" in taekwondo, EVER. What a ridiculous thing for a parent to do or say -.-

About the wing chun, that does make perfect sense, I try to learn it for a month, but again, striking and me don't seem to fit, and funny you should bring up Bruce, he doesn't seem to be worshiped as he was, but you could say JKD was MMA ^^

Thx, ironically(?) the earlier you learn a martial art, the less likely you are to ever get into a regular street or random fight because you have that confidence and I guess as boys, most of the times we want to exert our confidence through proving we can fight or something, but if you know you can then, you just don't. Unfortunately I didn't.

I have seen a 4-year exhibit that type of talent I've spoken about, and it isn't per say taekwondo, but the ability to mimic or observe physical movements in detail and my eldest son, who started walking at 9 and half months old and now who is 3 and half exhibits that physical talent (it comes from my wife). But I'm sure you can find some pretty amazing youtube videos on 4 year olds kicking some butt.
But I agree, it was a crushing thing for my father to say, and while it traumatized me for many years, I did finally understand what he really meant and him being the man that he was, I don't think his primary concern were my feelings, like ever lol. That being said, because he did say that I did understand that much earlier than others.
