Why I Keep Playing: Three Reasons

Hello TL, this is my first blog post, and I was inspired to make it by an awesome experience I had on the ladder today. I suppose a brief introduction is in order: I'm a college freshman dual majoring in computer engineering and music (emphasis French Horn). I've played (and currently play) a lot of games, and I frequently find it a struggle to balance my schoolwork with my gaming time (a struggle I imagine many of you share). In addition to this, all of my RL friend have either left the game or cannot play for various reasons -- leaving me to my guild friends and the ladder.

Usually at this point in a game, I would lapse into inactivity and eventually quit altogether. That process has repeated itself for quite a few games over the years (Maplestory, Flyff, Runescape, VirtuallyAnyOtherGameOutThere), and in fact it almost happened for a brief period when SWTOR came out. I played SWTOR almost exclusively over my Christmas break, but as my server population grew sparse, my thoughts began to go back to Starcraft. As evidenced by my experience today, there are a number of clear reasons I keep playing the game. For simplicity's sake, I'll explain the top three that come to mind.

First off, the game itself. I've been gaming since early middle school, and I've played a great number of games over the years. From the first Call of Duty to Runescape and Age of Empires, I would say I have a decent amount of gaming experience. However I have yet to meet a game quite like Starcraft 2. Based entirely on player skill, the game provides an easy to learn, almost impossible to master play style that allows for incredible and dynamic games. This revelation shocked my click-based Age of Empires experience, and it's what originally drew me into the game. Very few games I've played feel as balanced as Starcraft, and because of that balance there is never a feeling of an unjust loss. Sure you may feel a strategy is cheap, but there's always a reason you lost, and there's always room for improvement. Getting repeatedly mowed down by pros in Call of Duty didn't give me that feeling, nor did any of the other games I've played. The beauty of Starcraft is that (at least at lower levels) you really have nothing to blame but your own play. Sure you might rage that mutas/mules/sentries are imba, but when you go watch pro games, you find that those races can be countered, and aren't really as OP as you originally thought.

This brings me to my next point: the community. Compared to many of you, I'm a newcomer to the Starcraft scene. As last summer was winding down, I began to look for a game that would really challenge me. I was on a long (1 and a half month) vacation with my family to visit relatives, and I'd just bought a smartphone with 4G access. Before the vacation I'd enjoyed a lot of small Age of Empires 2 LANs with a few friends of mine, and RTS games were becoming a definite interest. The best player out of the small group of us had been a fan of Starcraft 2 for quite some time (he bought it on release I believe). I thought it'd be just like any other game though, and I didn't want to spend the money for a game I'd probably put down after a month or two. However he was still playing a year later, and I began to grow very curious. While I was on vacation, I began to text him about it, and look up more information online. The wealth of information astounded me, and I began to watch HD and Husky among others, reading guides on Team Liquid and the official forums, and generally gathering as much information as possible.

Arriving home, I bought the game asap, and then got introduced to Day[9]'s videos. This opened up a whole new aspect of the community, and I learned about the pro gaming scene, and eventually the hundreds of streamers. Now in any game this would be awesome, but the quality of the community is where the real difference comes in. As a game that takes a great deal of skill and knowledge, Starcraft tends to attract engineers, doctors, and other individuals who have a love for complex things. Add to that the gl hf and gg "manner" element of the community, and Starcraft unveils a whole new layer of attraction.

This "manner" element is especially prevalent on my next point of interest: The Ladder system. Now most ranking/matching systems I've messed with in the past have been rather abysmal experiences. Granted I don't have a great deal of experience with systems of the sort, but not only does the match up system work, there is a gl hf and gg in just about every game. Sure they might not always really mean it, but the very fact that it's there gives the game a whole different feel. Then occasionally you will really find someone who means it, and those experiences are the ones that keep you laddering and loving the game. The motivator for this blog was just such a match.

I was playing a few ladder matches, trying to use up the bonus pool I'd accumulated while away on vacation. Reading some guides on TL and SCV Rush had inspired me, and I decided to adopt some slightly new strategies in my gameplay. As I expected, trying a new build, my first game did not end up well, and I was a bit deflated by the loss. I didn't have a great deal of time to ladder before my next class, and I wanted to reach top 8 in my division again (was 12th at the time). So I queued for another match, and got a TvP. Since my strategy was a 2 rax FE with an early ghost timing, this was perfect, and I proceeded to (fail) at the build.

I was extremely late with my ghost academy, I threw away all my units in the attack, then forgot to make vikings and strung out my army across the middle. My opponent's army just happened to be moving at that same time, and he wiped out my entire force before I did virtually any damage. Now in a normal gaming community, I'd probably get laughed at: "Nice job, man. You trying to lose?" But instead my opponent uttered a sympathetic "ouch." We struck up a conversation of sorts over our various engages, and what could have been an incredibly frustrating match turned into a rather hilarious one. Starved for minerals, I tried to take out one of his expansions. Then I found out what he meant by "trying something new too." He had created a Mothership and 17 carriers, then proceeded to max out all air upgrades. By this time it was more than obvious that the game was over, but knowing the satisfaction of destroying a base, I asked him what he wanted me to do. He asked me to stay, and we proceeded to share some laughs about the destruction happening in my base. Trading ggs, I was about to ask him if he was done with the destruction when he left the game, giving me the win. Now it could be that that was purely accidental, he might've thought I'd already left, but given the overall feel of the match, I think he gave me the win as a thank you. He turned out to be a Top 25 Gold player, and with my bonus pool, I jumped up 10 ranks to land at the #2 spot in my division.

Even without the win, the match was probably one of the most enjoyable and memorable I've played so far on ladder. I was fighting a losing battle for most of the game, but I was having more fun than I usually do in a winning game. It's these sorts of games that keep me playing. The games when win or lose, I'm having a blast. These games can only happen with a game as well developed as Starcraft, and a community connected by the likes of Day[9], DJWheat and the pro gaming scene. It's a unique flavor in the gaming world, and one I think I'll be hunting for as long as my gaming career continues.

Sorry about such a long post, I tend to start out with one thing in mind, then go on to talk about a thousand others in what was supposed to be a short paragraph. If you're curious, you can download the replay here: http://drop.sc/130713 and here's the chat log:

Let me know what you guys think. Do you agree with these points, or do you have others you'd like to add? Also any suggestions on writing blog posts would be welcome. Normally I'd try to include pictures to break up the text, but at the moment I've got to run and I know this won't get posted if I try to delay. Plus there aren't really a ton of pictures that would be relevant, as I'm not talking about the game in particular.

TL;DR version:
3 reasons I play the game:
1. Skill-based very well-balanced game that is easy to play, hard to master.
2. The community is amazing and engaging, really adds a whole new level to the definition of a gaming community.
3. The ladder system works very well (in my opinion) and some great experiences can happen that keep you coming back for more (such as the replay I linked above).

for me the game itself is the largest aspect great game decently well balanced (balanced enough to where you have no excuses for losing if you are really better than your opponent (excluding unscouted cheese but that's just there and if you scout it you win ))

the community would be a much larger aspect for me if i were a pro or simply had the money to travel to some of the different events (or was 21 for a damned barcraft baltimore barcraft last mlg was 21+ :/)

then the ladder system...while i do love auto match making i do prefer the iCCup/pgtour ladder systems from BW with letter ranks and you start from the bottom...along with seasonal resets where everyone starts back at the bottom (i got a few games with very high level players despite being horrible at BW due to this (was only in the Cs w/P&Z and D+ w/T))

all in all your reasons are fairly good and pretty much the same as why most people stay can't really think of much else xD

I would agree that the game itself is probably the largest aspect for most of us. The iCCup etc systems certainly do sound neat, but I'm not quite sure what I'd think of it (I played like 2 games of BW online, got zerg rushed then totally demolished and quit xD). I imagine with a huge reset like that in today's system a ton of sub-par players would get so frustrated they'd just leave. Though it does give the opportunity to play with someone famous, I'm not sure if it'd work out in the long run. Would be fun to prove yourself and have a fresh chance at placing every once in a while though

Part of the community that I didn't mention a whole lot is all the streamers. I actually watched 3 different streams during the writing of the post (yeah it delayed me a bit xD). The ability to go out and do that, see how your favorite players or friends play and be able to apply that is just so awesome to me. I recently read this guide and that really hit home how awesome all the streaming really is. Limitless FPVODs are available for us, which can really add to our game.

I wish there were more lower-age events as well, but there would probably end up being more issues than good unless it was really local. I'd love to start a club of sorts at my college for example, but I'm not sure how many people play.

I like your post, I've wanted to make one similar to it for some time because the people who dislike certain aspects of the game tend to yell the loudest and all the optimism and positivity can get drowned out by the "not as good as BW" "bnet is a ghost town" "i have ladder fear" "x,y,z race imba so I quit playing".

So here is why I play it:

I play it because a 6 pool is as equally as viable as 3 hatcheries.

I play that I can spend 5 minutes getting the basics of a strategy or an hour thinking over my forge fast expand building placement.

I play it because the only thing defending me from my enemy is my game knowledge and skill, not a tower, or a fortified bunker or a huge expanse.

Keep on playing man.

it seems the higher league you are, the less "manner" the players become, at most I would be glad if they leave the game with a GG

But I love the game, the whole e-sport scene and casters really enriches the experience by a lot. There are some occasions when I was playing behind and made some very bold decisions and even out or win the game, I could almost hear Tastosis in my head saying "beautiful decision making, I am getting the sickest nerd chills all over my body right now" lol

I was interested by the title, but then your post was really long and I thought to myself, "You need a simple 1,2,3 method."

And then you did.

5 Stars.

@Dingobloo: I love those reasons, they encompass what I said in a nutshell. That is truly why I keep playing the game, and why it will never bore me.

@ETisME That's very interesting, I wonder if others have experienced the same? I know at least from Gheed's posts, Bronze league is a horrible pit of cursing, but then he worker rushes everyone so that doesn't exactly bring out the best in people. I've found most of my most fun games have been gold league fellows, but there's plenty of BM gold league players as well. Perhaps it's more of the luck of the draw.

Those games make you feel unbelievably awesome, I love the imagery of Tastosis in the background haha. Nothing can match that level of epicosity.

@TerlocSG Thanks! Though wasn't quite as simple as I was hoping it would be haha.

Agree with this for the most part. Becomes noticeable once you hit diamond and go up from there.

well me personally (mid/high master depending on mental state) i tend to recieve ggs in about half of my games and rage in about a quarter of them so i generally must be playing mannered people

however myself i don't rage, especially rage in text to another player i just tend to end up a little depressed after my losses mostly due to my own play which very rarely feels as precise as i want it to be (i can tell just how off i am sometimes and it just destroys me mentally :/) i do quite often leave without gg though

this is caused by my mental state being thrown all around due to my bad play which adds up to this no gg "ragequit" which is really just my mind wanting out of that game and either into the next, watch replay to make sure of what went wrong, or get up and jog a bit/other workouts

when i leave without a gg i mean no harm by it it's simply me being unsatisfied

leaving without gg isn't really that big of a deal however, raging at your opponent who played well to defeat you is
which is actually the problem i had with the old idra mindset (might still be there but he def rages less...gj eg guys getting him under control) of "i lost to a shitty player" every player was shitty to idra except a select few this was probably because he rated purely off of mechanical ability within the game and ignored other aspects where players made up for their lack of mechanics with well thought out and executed builds or making use of various other aspects of the game

no one is perfect at everything in starcraft (except flash but he weakens himself every once in a while to give the haters a glimmer of hope) so when you lose you should really respect what your opponent did right
ironically this mindset led me to understand how to play ZvP and TvP better than i knew how to play PvT and PvZ for a while because i was studying what my opponents were doing right and simply accepting what i did wrong and not studying what i did right while ignoring my opponents mistakes (unless they were glaring) giving too much respect to my opponent who beat me and all i really knew how to do was to get myself in unfavorable positions and lose won games for the longest time :/
damn i went on a tangent there xD

I think the wealth of information that this community brings is one of the coolest things about the game. There are so many ways to get sucked into the Starcraft addiction and when I first started, Mr. Bitter's 12 Weeks With the Pros was on most days. This is pulled me in because I started to see the depth that honestly wasn't in any other game I had played heavily. I don't think I've enjoyed a game outside of the game itself more than this one. Day[9]'s dailies, player streams, tons of smaller tournaments, and the GSL are constantly available. Like many, I spend as much or more time watching SC2 content than I do playing games.

It's been awesome to have a place like TL to come and instantly have resources to draw from. Even more awesome is that there isn't a correct way to play and the constantly shifting metagame instigates stylistic variance from month to month. The fact that we see new strategies emerge and recede over time is really fun to watch. This is what keeps it all so fresh. Just because someone understands how a build should unfold doesn't mean they understand why it works. For me, this constant shift has helped me to understand how to tweak a strategy rather than simply be stuck following a predetermined build order. If only someone could use Hydralisks and Carriers effectively on a regular basis!

It's nice to have a post with a positive spin on it. It's sometimes depressing to see all the complaints and I agree with Dingobloo on his points. It's cool to have options.
