Hi TL,

I recently purchased a new notebook and it just arrived today. For those who are interested it's a Sager NP8150 with an Intel 2670-QM i7 processor, 8 GB 1600 MHz RAM, and a 2 gb ATI Radeon Mobility HD 6990m graphics card. I'm pretty excited.

However, in my last computer I was using Norton as my default anti-virus and firewall protection and I was wondering if there's a better free option out there. I already downloaded Malwarebytes for some malware protection, but I don't know if that is my best option for that category or if it is particularly up to date.

I was hoping the TL community could give me some savvy advice and point me toward some good comprehensive free security software, it would really help me out a lot.

Thanks!

There's a tech support forum that's more appropriate for these kind of questions. That said, I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

I've run all sorts of antivirus, and its been completely innefective

For the last 5 years I have run no antivirus whatsoever, and have my windows install on a small harddrive with all data on the other. I had one spyware infection about 2 years ago, which I resolved by reformatting the small harddrive and upgrading to windows 7. Other than that I have had no viruses.

If you have some basic common sense with what .exe's you run, getting stuff is very rare.

In my experience it doesnt really matter what you run, if you get something just google how to remove it and follow the instructions
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a pretty good one, and it's free if you have genuine windows.

The latest norton is better than MSE. Norton used to be really terrible but now it's really quite good. I would say, use your norton subscription first, and then if you want a free one go for MSE.

if you are sitting behind a NAT router and you are able to control which sites you go on (aka don't klick on links the spambots send you etc, you do need some computer-related brains for this!), you can actually just go without firewall and antivirus. That's what i've been doing on my home machine for .. 3 years now? maybe a bit longer even. Never had a single problem.

On my notebook, i run microsoft security essentials too though cause that one get's hooked up to university wireless every now and then.
