I'm still trying to learn how to draw realistic portraits. The progress is coming along quite nicely, so far I've finished two portraits since my last blog (you can see it here: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=298915) and done a few smaller things.
Still don't have a scanner, so crappy phone pictures will have to do, but I'm planning on buying one. I also bought a tablet today so I'm going to try to do some digital drawings as well. It's really really hard to get used to drawing on a tablet though, I thought it would be a lot more like drawing on paper but it's completely different lol. I guess I just have to practice more.
The first portrait is of NaNi.
Original picture and my portrait in two steps:
Not very happy with this picture, at least not as a whole. I did however learn a lot of stuff from drawing the whole thing despite not being happy with it from start to finish. Most important thing: don't draw such hard edges around everything. It looks very weird and unnatural.
Second picture is of Hyuna from 4minute in three steps:
A lot happier with this one, even though I think the first picture looks better than the last one lol. Was fun drawing with very light shadows as well, but hard at the same time. I thought it would be easier but it leaves less room for errors.
Like before, constructive criticism and just general comments are very very appreciated and welcome! :D

I see lines. Human faces don't have lines on the edges, unlike a cartoon character. You did a pretty good job with the blurring and shading and such, but you need to take that extra steps to make it not seem like a five year old drew it. (Not bashing here, but you should picture liney eyes, liney chin and nose, liney head and such.) Like under the girl's chin, or on the edge near her right eye. (HER right eye.) The nose is horrible with the line. That dude's lips, those lines... Get them outta there.

I love the realistic shading but the faces feel cartooney. Especially the lips. It's like there is 2 ways of drawning mixed in one. To be honest I'm trying to learn drawing too so I probably wouldn't do any better ! Keep your blog updated with your progress, it's motivating me to try that stuff.

Wow, those are really good. You should keep going with these progess blogs, and plus, more sc2 player and kpop girl drawings please! ^^

I think in the second picture you did a better job with the lines overall, but the skin folds below the eyes and the lower lip still seem a bit too strong. Very good overall though. That's way better then I could do.

I agree with the comments about the lines, however as someone who has done pencil drawings for a long time, this was definitely a difficult step to overcome I found.
One thing that you really have to conciously focus on is drawing what is actually there and actually see, and not what you think is there or what you think you see (if youre going for photo realism of course, but the same sort of "rules" apply when you stylize your art).
As a child, did you ever have those puzzles where it gives you two pictures that are similar, but 5 differences that you have to find? Do that with your drawing and the actual photo, find as many as you can, and next time your drawing, try to remove as many as possible.
The Naniwa picture for example, if you look at his eyes, you can see the whites of his eyes all the way around the bottoms of the iris', however in your drawings the iris makes contact with the bottom eye lid.
Its really not an easy thing to overcome, but getting all of the angles and proportions and all of that really go a long way in capturing the essences of drawing someones face.

Looks pretty good! Makes me want to get back into drawing too since I haven't done one in a year now.
In the second drawing, you should really darken the shading for the teeth; it's always going to seem relatively light in color compared to the surrounding blackness and having them that light just makes them stand out even more in a bad way. It's also why I don't really like drawing portraits with teeth showing lol.
By the way, are you using any grid lines to guide your outlines or are you just doing it freehand and considering whether the proportions look right?

You don't have to use tablets. Some people (like me) are better at drawing on real paper, while some people are good at drawing with tablets, some are good with both, while most people are good at drawing with one and not the other. So if you don't like using tablets, don't.

Wow! This is some really really good criticism, thanks! I fully agree with everything that has been said. Coming from not drawing any realistic drawings at all, having very defining lines on everything has just become an habit to the point where it feels more wrong to not have those lines than to have them lol. But from now on I'll try my hardest to not draw any hard lines. I sketched a really fast drawing of IU based on the criticism I got, just to see if I'm going in the right direction. Basically I tried to draw no hard lines, but I found it very hard when drawing the eyes. Are these okay or do they need even lighter?
Haven't done the mouth yet but I'll do it in a sec.

Yeah that's probably true. I find it more fun to draw complete portraits instead of practicing smaller things over and over though. But I guess it might not be the best practice.
Maybe I should read up on things and practice more before I continue drawing complete portraits. So far I'm completely self taught and barely have any idea what I'm doing, only drawing what "feels" right, so reading up on stuff instead of just drawing might be good practice as well.

I find it kind of funny how people are criticizing the lines / not being real enough.
I learned how to draw "realistic" so young, that I have a hard time drawing anything cartoon-like -- even stick figures. Not joking. I actually envy people who draw cartoony.

^ If you're having fun, then ok, but making progressing in art is like progressing in learning to play an instrument. Not every session is fun, and hard sometimes boring work is required to train hands, eyes and brain to work together. Spend your time how you see fit, there's nothing wrong with enjoying oneself from time to time. If you're really into portraits give this guy a watch: http://www.youtube.com/user/deekay130?feature=watch He's pretty good at it, maybe you might learn a thing or too from watching, though personally I'm more into concept art (like this: http://www.mattmatters.com/ ).
