People are fooled into thinking pro gamers worked hard when SC2 came out for a year when in fact just about all of them have been playing other RTS games at high levels for many, many years.

I totally agree with the OP. Starcraft and work/school go hand in hand. Doesn't Polt go to the best school in Korea? And he is still a great player.

Stable? Like there is ANYTHING stable anymore. relationships last shorter than ever, Banks going bancrupt, people loosing their jobs...
This includes Progaming, and its sort of easy to notice: take a look at how many diffrent sponsors are out there, how offten they change... you get the picture.
The only thing STABLE is death, one way or another :D.

Congratulations, you've discovered nihilism. I should warn you that this phase is basically intolerable to your friends and family. Soon you will figure out hedonism, your casual friends will approve, but your friends and family will still be upset. Finally you will move on to secular humanism and be awesome again.

i think the disconnect is more so in a persons inability to know his limits. this is prop an upbringing or social environment kinda thing.

i also think there is a sort of beauty to the thought of anything being possible that im somewhat jealous of... i say anything that isnt detrimental to ones life which is basically anything when you are only in HS and as long as that thing doesnt include dropping out i say go for it.

the act of FAILING will teach you about yourself and your limits and is a great lesson to have now rather then later. as said before there are only 3 things in life that are certain, death taxes and terran being op

The delusions of grandeur in e-sports is pretty big. I was thinking of replying something similar to your post to some of the posters who are thinking of trying to be pro or people trying to figure out how to make money off of e-sports. A lot of people have this dream of becoming a pro, I did, but I quickly realised I would never have the time to devote to becoming pro. I just watch others be good at the game and enjoy the game as a game and play it for fun.

If you arent dedicated, focused or determined, you will not get anywhere. I wonder how all of those people claiming to go pro are, curious as to what their progress looks like

It seems there's a lot of hardworking, wise and experienced people in this blog. Unfortunately I'm not one of them, so all I can say is: Go ahead and save the world!

What I've always said to people... Try a progamer schedule on your winter/summer vacation. Did you like it? Did you improve tremendously? If yes, keep practicing, but don't quit your job/dropout. If no, just play like you did before.

People think it's fun because they like the game, but like many things you like, you will probably get tired of it if you just play it too much.

I've seen this happen 3 times on Reddit from around Dia/Master leagued players.

What happened?

First one: Polylol

Was in Master League, said he'd be practicing his arse off to hit GM and eventually become pro. First day, gets demoted to Diamond League after many games of flawed play. 4 days later, stops streaming.

Second one: Lobber

I think he was Diamond or low Masters but he actually made progress. He got to GM, he made it into a professional team (I don't think it's a salaried position but it's still something) and he seems dedicated.

Third one: Lobber's roommate

I dunno what progress he's made but Lobber discouraged him to take that road unless he was absolutely sure he had the willpower and the mindset to do it.

word to the wise. when the economy is bad you must CREATE to get ahead. and the okurwrong rule of making money is what do you do when your country is NOT ahead? get more ahead by creating something new. being a pro gamer just doenst pay much unless you are such a low percentage of player and you WOULD know you are of that quality.

do you think the pro gamers currently are going to last? the answers 90 percent will not. newer younger MUCH better players will take down the pros you look up to now within a few years and you will never hear from those pros again TRUST that. are you going to be able to CRUSH your current idol? because thats what it will take

People think it's fun because they like the game, but like many things you like, you will probably get tired of it if you just play it too much.

An issue with this is:
  • Many people don't really know what a "progamer schedule" is. Sure at its most primative level it's "Playing Starcraft II for 8 hours straight per day" but many pros probably practice more intelligently than just grinding out ladder games or customs. Look at Stephano for instance. 4 hours a day yet his practice must be so well thought-out that he could beat Korean pros that practice 10 - 12 hours a day.

  • In a summer vacation, you could probably get a fucktonne done in 6 - 10 weeks depending on how long it is. However, winter vacations are usually only 2 weeks and that's not really enough time to show results. Yes, you could maybe hit a league ahead of you if you did that (if you're in the low leagues and desire to get good at SC2) but it's doubtful.

  • Practicing mechanics is a lot harder than it looks. It requires a colossal amount of repetition. I once tried a day where I grinded out around 14 PvZs (in a row and all practice games vs Easy AI) where I merely practiced FFE openings and either transitioned into 5 Gate Robo or 1 Gate Stargate to try and perfect the build. Even with this, identifying mistakes is easy but correcting them requires a great deal of thought, timing and willpower to do things over and over again. Even after repeating this for what seemed like almost 2 hours, I still don't feel that confident when opening up FFE..All that really changed about my play was that I changed the rally point of my 8th Probe to the natural instead of manually moved it from the minerals to there.

  • Can you really practice when you have a tonne of work to do? Maybe so in the first year of university/college but work does pile up a tonne in the later years.

this also isnt true on one point. practice does not make perfect. my brother and me can shoot 90 percent from the free throw line 4 years after we stopped playing ball. my old teamates older brother whos in the NBA cant shoot 90 percent from anywhere on the court and the reason is some ppl are just not gifted in certain aspects of life. there will be people who just are damn good and you dont know why. people will say oh he doesnt practice as much blah blah. at the end of the day ppl also have MMR and ELO and guess what, you cant increase it and its most certainly a hidden rating that you will never get past no matter how hard you try. genes determine this stuff and it sucks but thats life

Oh really?

Then again, it is possible he could have lost GM status in these last 30 days, but that usually involves inactivity and not being plain bad. He's actually won one or two small tournaments though.

EDIT: There was apparently a bug that made it easier to hit GM than usual (which he didn't abuse but it got him there anyway.) He lost it after that but could have kept GM status if he played more.

I always had a feeling that genes and genetics would have had a huge impact on how one improves at SC2.

GM is a step in the right direction, but it's hardly pro status, especially on anything but KR and even then there's a lot of teamless guys there.
