hm yeah I've never heard of that either. every professional runner breathes through the mouth when competing. it's pretty indisputable that breathing through the mouth can more easily move volume of air than breathing through the nose. and it's equally clear that it's possible to breathe through the mouth without gasping. i can agree that a runner, no matter the distance, should not attempt a pace that causes the "out of breath" feeling before the end of the race. but i have no doubt that breathing through the mouth with proper control and rhythm will delay the "out of breath" feeling longer than breathing through the nose. i've done some nose breathing (with both "stomach breathing" and "chest breathing") and the best pace i could hold is around 7 minute miles. any faster and i start accumulating some oxygen debt and breathing through the mouth would relieve that pretty quickly. i understand that some extremely aerobically fit people, with some really efficient muscles, can run 6 minute miles with nose breathing. that's not very fast though for a serious runner. but again i've never heard of anyone being able to run faster for longer with nose breathing than with mouth breathing

Well yeah, it may just have been set by the trainers for the level of athletic ability, I mean i didnt continue after highschool and I broke my leg pretty badly playing varsity soccer so I couldnt even if I wanted to, obviously you let the accumulation escape through the mouth at regular intervals, but maintaining the rhythm for me personally after being taught this was alot easier. I mean I wasnt particularly prolific but I could hold down 6-7 minutes easy with it. My point being after hearing what you have to say and you could just call it a theory (since I dont care enough to actually research this and just have experience to back it up) is that there is probably a sweet spot somewhere. I mean its possible over a certain short distance 5-10k where you can probably exceed your normal pace with nasal breath. But again its just a personal experience.
