It's been awesome to read Flamewheel and Bumblebee's Dota2 blogs, but there's one problem. I don't understand half of it. Prior to getting a beta key from Heyoka with a promise to blog about it, I had never played a single game of Dota. My entire experience with the game—and the genre as a whole—was watching The Invitational and ESWC, and talking with some more experienced friends about it.

My first and only hero so far has been Nature's Prophet. Immediately, Bumblebee let me know that this was a poor choice; Nature's Prophet is considered among the harder heroes to learn at the beginning. But Nature's Prophet appeals to me for two reasons, first, he's a tree hugger, and second he left a strong impression on me in The Invitational, as iceiceice seemed to dominate with him in an overall losing effort. Many dota heroes look like they take themselves too seriously, but Nature's Prophet just looks like he doesn't give a damn.

My first few games were custom games, first with no computer heroes, and then with full computer heroes once I figured out how to add them in. After playing a bunch of those games, I finally was brave enough to try the custom games. My first four times, we lost, but in the fifth, I played decently, and had the fortune of excellent allies. Our team dominated, losing only one tower and securing my first ever dota2 victory.

This blog is a strategy guide, but it's for people who are new to the game, who perhaps know how dota works in general terms (for some more help, check out Bumblebee's basics blog), but have no idea of how to really play it. It addresses five really important—but by no means intuitive—concepts that I've learned in playing my handful of custom games and ranked matches. But I think this might also be a good read for more experienced players. To the outsider, Dota2 looks impossibly hard. There are infinity heroes, infinity items for those heroes, infinity random stats, and a notoriously angry and noob-unfriendly community. For a new Sc2 player, you have Day9, the TL strategy forum, and bronze league. In Dota2, it's impossible to know where to begin. That's where veterans need to come in to create that content. But sometimes when you're on the inside, it's hard to know what is and isn't apparent to a new player. And that's where this blog might be helpful.

Oh, and I have a key to give out. See the end of the thread for details!

Here's what I've learned so far:
#1. You don't want your creep to "win"
#2. Spending your money well is important
#3. The minimap is your friend
#4. Pay attention to the chat... sometimes
#5. HOLY FUCK DON'T DIE

#1. You don't want your creep to "win"
In my first custom game without computers, I charged out of the gate with my Nature's Prophet, picked a lane, and started killing stuff. It took a couple waves, but we overcame the first tier one tower and started pushing to the tier two tower. We killed that and then I ported to a different lane and repeated the process. After all the towers were down, I wasted no time in charging into the opponent's base and attacking those towers. And eventually, piece by piece, I led my swarming creep minions to victory.

Sadly for me, that's not really how dota works. One important thing I didn't realize for a long time was that it's never important for the minions ("creeps") in your part of the map ("lane") to win their little battle. In fact, you'd much prefer them to draw. That's because early game, it's much more important that you use the opening skirmishes to gain experience and gold, not to kill a tower. The faster and more efficiently you gain experience and gold from these battles, the stronger you'll become in a shorter amount of time, and the faster the opponents towers will fall in the long run.

What that means, is disabling auto-attack in your settings, and instead just sitting behind creep battles doing nothing. The important thing that I didn't realize was that the only hit that counts on an enemy unit is the last hit. It's much better to wait around until an enemy unit gets low, and then to time it so that your blow is the killing one. If you auto-attack or do damage outside of the final hit, than your minions will win the battle more decisively, run forward, and get slaughtered by the enemy tower and the next group of creep from the opponent. When you add the enemy heroes into the equation, the importance is obvious. If you stray too far from the safety of your own tower and begin to push into your opponent's territory, than you stand a much greater chance of being surprised and killed off.

A second thing to mention, something that really drives this point home, is the idea of denying creep. Your opponent is also hoping to get experience and gold by killing your creeps. So because you basically have no sympathy for your own troops, it's a clever trick to make sure to get the last hit on your own minions as well. Doing this denies (that's what it's called) your opponent from getting the gold and experience they need. Therefore, playing effectively in a lane means more than just finishing off your opponent's minions, it also means cruelly killing your own to deny them to the enemy.

#2. Spending your money properly is really important
In starcraft, the best way to improve your game, almost no matter what level you play at, is to spend your money better. In my first few games of dota, I had no idea of what items to buy, and so I just bought random ones, or else saved up absurd amounts of gold for a cool looking item I had spotted in the shop. This strategy lead me to being terribly equipped at some stage of the game; either in the beginning if I was saving, or in the end if I had bought too much.

In dota, item purchases are similar to a build order in starcraft. There's at least a loose progression that needs to be followed, and not doing so will give you issues. These builds are not things you'll find on your own, find someone who knows what they're talking about and consult them about this. Dota2 has a recommended items feature, accessed by clicking the side-ways question mark when you open the shop, but that can only get you so far. Guides like Flamewheel's are particularly useful in that regard. But in general in the early game, you need to be buying items so that you can keep pace and collect more gold in the late game, and then buy the better items.

It took me a while to get into the mindset of even remembering my gold. I would get caught up in running around the map killing stuff, that I wouldn't usually remember to check how much gold I had. The same is often true of beginners in starcraft. But with dota, I had to retrain the mentality that I was getting gold to buy a specific thing, and then to remember to buy that thing the moment I had the right amount.

One final note is about town portal scrolls. Playing NP, I don't really need a TP scroll. But if you don't play NP, I understand these are pretty important! Mobility is always a good thing to have. Plan on spending at least some of your early game money on health and mana regen items, and then remember to buy TP scrolls in the midgame.

#3. The minimap is your friend
Another starcraft skill that needs to be remembered in dota is paying close attention to the minimap. In my first couple games, I didn't really have a use for the minimap. Dota2 can often feel more like an individual game. When you're focusing on doing your little thing on your part of the map, casting spells and killing creep, earning gold and leveling up, it's not obvious that you need to be also paying attention to your faraway teammates.

But because dota is a team game, the minimap is your connection to your team. It's constantly telling you important details like how different lanes are doing, which enemy heroes your team can see, and the placement of your own team. Keeping an eye on the minimap will let you know when you need to be worried about getting ambushed ("ganked") because the opposing heroes are gone from the map. It lets you know if and where your teammates are gathering, or whether they're pushing a lane, killing randomly generated creeps in the forest ("jungle"), purchasing items and recouping health back home, or attempting to gank an opposing player.

It's also really important to be aware when a player pings a place on the map. This is done by holding down Alt and Left Clicking a location on the map or the minimap. When you do this, it makes a sound for your teammates and calls attention to the pinged area with a little exclamation point graphic. Usually, allies ping places to point out lanes of yours that are losing badly, or to point out that Roshan (see Bumblebee's blog) should be killed, or might be in the process of being killed by the opposing side.

Finally, the minimap is useful to move around. Dota is played on a large map, and to navigate your camera around it, it's necessary to use the minimap. I've found it useful to remember to take a second to check out what the minimap is telling me every time I use it to teleport somewhere or move to a far away location.

#4. Pay attention to the chat... sometimes
When I played my first ranked matches, I was oddly nervous about the reaction I would get. I knew I would not play well; I had no build, no real idea what other heroes did, and no sense of how to play my character. I mentioned before that the dota community is somewhat infamous for being unwelcoming and cranky. So my resolution was to simply ignore the chat entirely, not to read the comments or respond to them. I quickly discovered that this was a smart decision, but it did have it's disadvantages which caused me to modify my perspective. Chat is just as important as the minimap in communicating with your teammates. If you're not part of an established team talking over the internet, it's important to be in touch about basic things.

The two chat messages I came across immediately were "b" and "ss", neither of which made any sense to me at first. But after asking around, and seeing them multiple times in context, both became clear. "b" is shorthand for "back", as in "run away from the fight". It could mean that the other team has more heroes close by, or that your team has accomplished all it can and to press on would be a big risk. For a new player, it's useful to treat this message as a command, because the player who says it is likely to know something you don't. But for most players, it's an important warning to heed, because it means that at the very least that the player who called "b" is retreating, and thus you can't count on his support.

The other mysterious chat message; "ss" is shorthand for "missing", as in "a lane is missing a player". This goes two ways, and it's important to make sure you know which one it is. If one of the opposing heroes is pushing a lane uncontested, than someone who notices this might type "ss" as a reminder to the player who has that lane as their responsibility. But if an opposing hero is noticeably missing from their lane, someone might also type "ss" to alert the team that there is an un-accounted for hero. The other hero might simply be back at their base, or they might be setting up a gank. This is another chat warning you need to act on. Especially as NP, I can potentially fill the gap caused by the other player if it's convenient. I can also teleport quickly to someone's aid if necessary. But also, that missing player could be me, or could be coming after me, and if you've left your lane for whatever reason, or are all alone and not in the safety of your own tower, this is something to be aware of. These two messages test your situational awareness, and force you to look at the bigger picture.

All of this said, it's also really useful to filter out any messages longer than a few letters. There doesn't seem to be a large community of players interested in giving constructive advice in dota, even in a closed beta where your ranking is really pretty meaningless. I've found dota to be a fun game to play and lose, as well as a fun game to play and win. When players BM you, it definitely takes away from that experience, and it's worthwhile to remember that the simple negative thought that leads to BM has already taken away from their experience. Don't feed the haters by responding, or even reading what they right. Focus on your own game and at getting better instead.

#5. DON'T DIE
This, it turns out, is the real art of dota. You can forget all of that pushing lanes, farming the jungle, leveling up, and buying items nonsense, because the main point of dota is to not die. In my first couple games it wasn't obvious to me what distinguished me as a new player; were people checking my items, where they seeing how poorly I was spending my money, were they seeing that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Maybe all of these things, but above all, I was dying way too much. In watching the best dota players on stream, I had completely missed one of the signature features of those games, which is narrow escapes. The players on Na'Vi, or EHOME, or the other top teams have escaping narrowly down to a science. I've gotten much better at this in just five games. In my first ever win, I died only twice, and one of those was after the game was essentially over.

I've learned a few crucial things about not dying. The first is that there's no shame in running away. If you're on low health, or if the other team has several heroes chasing you, don't try to be cute. Just book it away. You do more harm to your team by dying than you do taking a risk and trying to get an extra kill or finishing off a tower. This even includes running away from team fights, which is something I had problems with before. If my allies got into combat somewhere on the map, I'd immediately teleport in, usually without assessing whether the battle was winnable, or whether my allies were fighting or running away. Some thing happened to me on multiple occasions was that I would teleport in to help two allies under attack, only to die myself and have them somehow live. By in large, unless you're playing certain heroes, you and you alone are responsible for your safety, nor are you responsible for the safety of others. It's great if you can help on in that regard, but it is by no means your responsibility.

Dying is bad because it loses you gold and takes you out of the game for a long time; time that could be used to keep farming. It also gives your opponents gold, and a lot of experience. The time that your team is shorthanded because of your death is time that they cannot farm as effectively. It's hard to put this any other way. Don't die.

No seriously, don't die.

There's one more piece of advice I have. Ask for advice. Dota2 really is insanely complex, if these really important parts of the game weren't obvious to a new player, than the pros and cons of one pair of boots over another will be even more obtuse. Find a friend who has more dota experience than you, and ask questions. Get them to give you early item builds, explain the mentality of certain characters, and get them to show some of what they mean in games. Read the blogs that've been posted on TL. You can't learn dota on your own.

Now about that beta key. I want to give this beta key to someone who is new to dota. I have no real way to figure out if you are or aren't, but hopefully the honor system is good enough. If you're new to dota, just reply in this thread that you'd like to be considered for the beta key. If you have a friend who's new to dota, point them to this blog and get them to reply! After a couple days, I'll pick a winner!

Thanks for reading!

Very nice blog.

About the key, I'm new to DOTA, but not new to this genre of games in general so I don't know if it's possible for me to be considered.

Great read! :D I'm not really new to DotA, have played around 20 games, but a heap of HoN/LoL. I figured I'd post anyways though, you be the judge of whether I'm new or not. (Have also read through the playdota.com/heroes a hundred times, so I know every hero, I suppose that means I'm not new. :3) Good article! :D

Nice blog! Was a fun read. I pretty much understood everything and all i know about this kind of games is from 30min stream watching when beta came out. Would be real nice to get a key so i can mix it up with my SC2. Might switch fully.

furion is an amazing hero. one of best utilities in the game.

#1 is better understood as controlling the lane flow, pushing the lane can be quite important, as long as you know what you're doing. the lane shouldnt push when you need exp/gold, rather it should come to you, but when push you get the tower and more map control along with it.

When I read this I could feel the connection I feel just like you, I don't get all the things in these guys blogs either still I love them and all the streams that are going on, but i am new to genre and the game and I would very much like a key because the game starts to appeal to me, a lot!

I appreciated this guide/blog very much and would love to see more of those even if it doesn't have beta keys or anything, I just love hearing about the game!

Don't die becomes number one thing quickly, the rest you just don't have to think about after playing for some time.

I'm glad to see new people enjoy dota, keep it up and good luck in the learning process(read all heroes skils fast, it's really important to have just a basic idea what they can do to you, play one empty game with them to see how they work, no need to know how to play them, you need to know how to play against them thou)

I don't know if I qualify as "being new to DotA" because I've been playing LoL casually since launch, but if I do, I'd be more than happy to take that key off your hands

I've only tried DoTA once back back in the day on WC3. Back then I didn't understand it at all. Watching that big DoTA 2 tournament, things are a bit more clear and I think I understand the point of the game now. I would love to give it a try! I hope people don't mind playing with a complete newbie.

Great guide, looking forward to more of yours. My only DotA experience was watching The Invitational, and despite not knowing anything I found it really entertaining, so it's nice to have your view as someone totally new just learning the game from scratch. I don't want a beta key, though, just wanted to say great guide :-p

Hey, I've been trying to get into Dota for a long time now, and I've always been deterred by the skill level required for Dota and the "old" look that it presents :/ I tried LoL but found it a bit lacking when compared to Dota, and simply never got into HoN. Dota2 seems to be MUCH more appealing and inviting to new players. Dota2 also integrates many new MatchMaking algorithms to pair newer players (such as myself) to other newer players so as to present a combined learning experience for newcomers. I also have a passion for beta-testing, and have tested many games before from various publishers; I also belong to some 3rd party testing groups where many publishers go to test their games. I would very much like to try and test Dota2, first and foremost for the sake of testing, and secondly to advance my experience with the Dota-genre of games.

Thank you!

Well this blog makes a lot more sense to me than most of the others did, in the eye opening kind of way. I never really had a good grasp of these games, and actually the thing that put me off the most was that it's both a team based game, but also looked like most people are just doing their own thing for the most part of the game.

I'd like to try it eventually, but since Skyrim is bound to take up most of my time in the near future, I guess it isn't fair to ask for the key now. I'll keep an eye out for your blogs if you ever make any in the future though.

I've been after a key really to see what everyone is so interested in. I spend a lot of time watching sc2 coverage but I also like to broaden my esports horizons by checking out other games. In doing this I've watched quake live, counterstrike and even street fighter and bloodline champions whilst on a trip at dreamhack.

When I saw the prize money valve announced for the international and the teams who would be attending I was really interested. I ended up watching just about all of the games whilst trying to pick up what I could about the teams themselves and the game. Despite some of the initial lag problems which weren't too fun from a viewer perspective.. I really enjoyed the way the game flowed and the build up and tension you could get when a team would suddenly go on a ganking mission. As a result i've been incredibly excited about trying it out in the beta and seeing if it's the kind of game I'd enjoy playing as well as watching. I really like the direction valve are taking with the spectating options too and hopefully that will have a big impact on a lot of other games in the coming years to make everything better to watch.

Really enjoying all the articles on dota that keep popping up here in the blogs. It helps take the edge off not having any luck getting into the beta yet

Thanks for the tips! I'm in a similar position to you (hadn't really encountered the genre at all until the invitational) but it is something that I am really looking forward to getting in to.

I especially like the "don't die" point, I must admit that in other games I usually have a knack for grossly underestimating my chances of death and charging headlong in to the fray - I believe that such a heroic act is called 'feeding' in this game

I keep having that dream of Bee playing in the same team with rip, heyoka, treehuggy and keit.
It ends with decapitations and sodomy.

Never played DOTA before but have tried a bit of starcraft 2 DOTA (SOTIS) and it was pretty fun. Would really love to play a competitive team game again.

I've played HoN, not the actual DotA though. Don't know if that's good enough. ^^)
Been watching streams of DotA2 for a while now, it looks totally awesome, I'm always trying to recognise the heroes from HoN. Anyways, thanks, I liked the guide!

Hi

I'll be honest here and say that I'm not new (unless you could dota 2 cause I haven't played that ^^). I read your bit about a friend and I do have one that has played dota a bit, but considers himself very noob even though he isn't too bad & probably just needs to read a few guides from guys like you. Because of this I'd still consider him 'new' as he doesn't actively play the game, if this isn't allowed or you don't trust me to hand the key to him I understand but I thought it was worth a shot as he wouldn't sign up himself.

Thanks for the hard work you do, hope to see you in dota 2! (it rhymes, hehe)

Excellent read, I honestly never realized that you actually don't want to be pushing their towers as soon as possible. I'm completely new to dota have admittedly played a little LoL, but I'd life to join the beta because of the insane skill cap and competitiveness of the game.

I'm not new to Dota or Mobas (except Dota 2 ), but i'll comment anyway.

About the "#2. Spending your money properly is really important", if you don't know what to buy, use the recommended section in the shop. It's better to at least buy something useful to the hero you are playing than just randomly buying something. Basic knowledge but worth mentioning i think.

About the starting items, especially for supports i suggest to check Bumblebees amazing blog. Usually some of the tips here are good for other than support heroes also.

Great read, Great to see TLers sharing the keys with the community. Congrats whoever gets the key!

Really nice and informative blog man, keep up the good work.
I'm not sure if me playing league of legends disqualifies me from your beta key give-away but I really want to try DOTA2.
If it helps I've never played the original DOTA and I'm pretty bad at LoL too :D

That is quite a nice guide.
I've never played, or even watched DotA, but I have played LoL.
A beta key would be nice to try it out. Looking for something new to play.

Would love to be considered for the key :o Great to see that the nubs get a chance around here! And I love the content that's geared towards newbies - there does not seem to be quite enough of that out there. A personal hope of mine is to be able to get into the beta, and possibly use that to produce write-ups on the general roles of each hero that's currently up and the ins and outs of each that I can gather. Kind of like mini-guides I guess.

Thanks for the article ^^

As a dota veteran I can say that tip number 5 is good at first but as you progresses you will learn that you can be much more aggressive with your hero.

Lesson one: don't die
Lesson two: be aggressive
Lesson three: don't be overaggressive

At the top level you have learned the fine balance between passivity and aggression.

I have never played DotA before, but I really want to, lol! I watch linklink's stream every now and then and it looks really fun.

Thanks for a newb friendly guide too! I have been trying to follow some different conversations and threads in the DotA subforum but I get so lost cause I never played it before at all. I think you are probably right-- these are things that an experienced player doesn't even think about!

Don't die is so much easier said than done, once someone sniffs out a bad player and they're ahead, they're going to farm you through two towers. If you're new, tell your teammates and ask for ganks on your lane or you won't survive even if you play carefully.

I'm a pretty experienced player 5 or 6 years now, but i wanted to say this is a very nice intro guide. Going along with the post above teams like Na'Vi are known for their very aggressive play style. One of the best ways to help your DotA performances is to be able to accurately assess battles to determine not just if they are winnable, but also if there is a way you can save a teammate w/o dying.

I would love a beta key. Never played dota before, but I can tell that this game will immediately be one of my favorites. I have played about 200 games of LoL, and watched enough dota2 to know that I would enjoy dota immensely because it seems to take a lot more skill. So hopefully that counts as being new
Great tips, I've learned most of them from LoL but those are probably the most important of any dota-like game.

Good read, interesting reading from a newbies experience.

- Don't consider me for the key, I've been playing dota on and off for the past year or so . And yes Furion is a terrible first hero to play :D.

Also I'm loving all these new dota blogs, I'm considering writing a guide for something... But I don't think I'm good enough to do so and don't want to look like an idiot :D

Well I guess I'm almost exactly like you: I didn't watch the international, but I watched ESWC and have been watching linklink stream quite a lot. I've downloaded DOTA and am trying to get better. I would really appreciate a beta key <3.

I'd love the key. I played a little bit of DotA with my wife, as she was an avid dota gamer, but I never was able to get good at it because the shop system is very complicated. Once I got the mechanics, I had no idea how to build the items I needed, and which shop to get them from.

I got good at LoL after that and then started playing HoN, which I am very competant at.

I'd love me some DotA 2!

Also it was my birthday yesterday, and it'd be the best gift ever.
Thanks man

Good guide tree.hugger, i think this one will be very useful to the new people jumping on the DotA genre. Pretty much all you said is very true, but i disagree with you in disabling autoattack to last hit better. I think the better way to do it is just spam move comands (click around) so you dont attack, or spamming the hold positions/stop/whatever command, that cancels your attack, because you may need to autoattack later on to push or something and it could be annoying for newer players to be clicking everytime to attack fast (not taking animation cancels in here).

I would also love that key, i have like 30-40 dota games played, but i guess my experience in HoN and LoL pretty much get me out of chances right?

Really nice blog. Feels really heartwarming and nostalgic to read this as I am remembering how i tried to learn Dota in the first place. Years later and I still have much more to learn and so do you and everyone else. Also, I can definitely relate to this as I am sharing my account with my friends who is basically new to the game. Seeing them progress makes me ( and them) feels happy and accomplished. It's fun to see a lot of people basically starting from scratch together.

Good luck on your progress and hope you are having fun!

Got to agree with your first statement there, haven't played Dota nor any of it's genre ever before and it can be really overwhelming to read certain guides. >.<
I actually got into contact with Dota 2 through these forums. So I hope to get a key from this. ^ ^

But even without getting one, checking out this guide has been anything but a waste for me, so I can't complain either way.

Also, I can advice people who are completely new to the game to watch a Dota 2 stream here and there.
Even without any commentary of the streamer and his/her skill being way above what yours will be when you start playing, you will get a good feel of how a game flows and goes. You will probably pick up a few things here and there as well and, believe it or not, the Dota 2 stream chats are often enough filled with a decent amount of pretty good people who don't mind answering a question or two instead of flaming your ass for asking them.

At least, that works for me, everytime I watch a Dota 2 stream I happen to learn a few things from which at least 1-2 stick with me. Downside is that you are watching a game you... want to play, but can't. >.<

Anyways, guides like these will certainly help me get more easily into the game when I finally have a Beta Key or (more likely), when the game is free to play for the public. So, big thanks for the guide Tree and don't give up on Prophet. ^ ^

Also good luck to everyone else who's hoping for a Beta Key.

I'm new to Dota, but I've watched The International with great interest. I've always been a CS player and teamgames appeal to me more than soloplay (though I love to watch SC2, just don't like to play it). Having a new view on the game, you give very insightful comments which can come in handy if I ever get my hands on a key (or until release :p). This combined with Bumblebee's blog will surely help me a bit, so thanks for the effort.

Cool. I'm not new to the game but I support these dota blogs that you guys are doing.

In a sense, the first four tips are there to make number five a reality. You don't want your creeps to be 'winning', you want them to be closer to your tower so that you have an escape route + no space for an enemy gank. You spend money so that your hero keeps up with everyone else, survival items are almost always the first few items to get (if you're a noob, getting 2 bracers at the start with every hero is a sure way to reduce deaths). Minimap awareness keeps you mindful of ganks, especially in pubs where people 'forget' to warn. The chat should signal any possible ganks, both from the enemy and from your team.

tl;dr don't die

also, many years of pub dota has taught me that you should never ever ever ever ever rely on your teammates, if you put yourself in a situation where you need a teammate to help you then you are doing it wrong (this does NOT apply if you have people you trust on your team)

another thing i learnt is that if you want to make some friends through dota, be a bitch and support them and/or save them all the time even if you think you can't. most people that play dota are faggots and bm the shit out of you once they realise you suck so get them to like you before you start feeding

Great blog!

I guess i could be considered a noob when it comes to DotA, i played very few dota1 games and played some LoL and HoN casually for 1-2 months. But I've always been interested in the genre, and i think the release of DotA2 will be the time i really get into it. Having early beta access would be great to try it out and I'll try to not ruin any of your games.
Thanks a lot for the guide again, a lot of people need this kind of guide when it comes to DotA-style games.

Well, I'm not into DotA (yet), and I'm not into the genre either. Actually I am mostly a fighting game competitive player, never get to play DotA or any other of the kind. Just like you, I have a friend who plays it and we get to talk and watch about it some times. He knows that I'm really in the mood to start into DotA 2 and he gives me some advices on some of his knowledge from the first game pointing some things to me. And to be honest, the more I learn/theorize about that game THE MORE I want to play it! Thats it, hope I get some chance D:

Btw I'm new here, I've been participating on every single contest I know to get the chance to win a key... Hope I can make it some time down the road. Thanks for your time, chance and sharing, appreciated.

Here are my very limited (14 games) hon stats to prove my nubness. The account is a little old but the mac client didn't work well (thus the crash and my disconnect) and had no sound for a while so I had to wait till I got windows running on boot camp to try again. Thanks for the blog.

im confused, why are you trying to give your key to someone new to DotA? they have a high chance of wasting the key. Im a long time player so i dont qualify.

Anyway it was a nice read on someone's perspective who's kind of new to the game.
One important thing I didn't realize for a long time was that it's never important for the minions ("creeps") in your part of the map ("lane") to win their little battle.

I understand where you come from. I'm checking up Dota 2 streams atm because I'm afraid I'll be flamed up too much if I would get a key and would go playing without any knowledge of the game. Even in the chat there I get random flames when I tell them I never played dota in my life. I did try HoN but was gone after 2 games because I was flamed on so much...

I got loads of experience with League of Legends but this is like a total new game. I would be really honored to be able to try this game out and see what it actually is. It looks like alot of fun in the streams and hell, I might even try to setup a stream might I win a key somewhere so people can see my mistakes and help me learn more about the game.

Good to know there are more people involved that aren't all PRO dota veterans.. I already kinda felt lost.

Awesome blog. Totally linking this to friends once DotA2 comes out/they get a beta key. I figured most of these were self-explanatory so I never thought of mentioning them. It's hard to remember your first few games in a genre.

I play HoN so I'm not new to DotA but it's nice of you to have the contest!

Well nice post. I played LoL for a bit so some things are not that new to me but it's nice to have a quick reminder and some other explanations about the game (and your experience with learning Dota which is a thing i liked quite a bit). I'm new to Dota but, as i said, i have played a little bit of LoL (something around 500 games, not sure) so i dunno if i can qualify for the contest but if i am i would really like this beta key

And about the newbie thing learning i hope to play with plenty ppl from TL so they might be a little less unforgiving with me

But pls keep making this posts and telling us about your Dota Experience! Even if it's not top pro strats it's always nice to hear about ppl having fun XD

I had a brief spat with Dota back in the "golden" days of Dota here in Denmark. There was a time it was played in every LAN center and known to all. Today, LoL and other games seems to have taken over the scene here, as well as myself.

I'm hoping Dota2 will be a great revival for the game. It has definately caught my attention, and I hope that many new players will be swept up by all this betakey hype. Just look at me, posting in all these threads and f5ing my gmail in my pursuit one of the coveted keys.

I have no idea why i only just stumbled upon this.

I have a friend that is new to dota so i am posting on his behalf I tried to get him to play against AI in DotA 1 and it was pretty hilarious to watch I'd love to get him into DotA2 so he can get a good start in this genre

So many DotA guides on TL :D.. makes me want to write one. haha

All 5 of your tips are good. For a beginner DotA player, its always important to be active or if not at least look active. Spam your spells on the enemy, last hit and deny creeps, ask your teammates if they want you to gank their lane, ALWAYS be involved in clashes. Once your teammates warm up to you and see that you are going out of your way to ask what you need to do, they will give you advice on what to do and not do in crucial points of the game.

Oh yeah, and last tip. Always bring a town portal.
I know where my towel is.

Unless it's first blood or pre-3 minutes, it is not worth sacrificing yourself for the kill, you rather send an enemy back to fountain or force a salve.

- Check your opponents mana constantly. There are times you might be facing a WW/Blink hero and you dont want to engage because he will just blink/ww away, but he may have no mana which opens up an opportunity window, similarly applies to stunners. This leads on to...

- Keep a tag on your opponents skill cooldowns, situation where your enemy (eg: crystal maiden) uses frostbite, this gives you approx 8.5 seconds without the fear of being disabled. Obviously you keep a rough count the cooldowns of big ultimates (eg: ravage, overgrowth), but I've gone down to the level of if a Weaver popped out of shukuchi 1 or 2 seconds faster than they should of.

- Sometimes you get a feeling that your opponent suddenly became more confident (start approaching you), most likely a gank is coming your way.

I started playing dota a couple months ago so I'd be ready for dota2 ^^

I've streamed every game of dota I've ever played. The audience effect kept me motivated to play through the brutal learning phase and learn hero/item builds. The people love me. ;p It definitely helped me become a better player faster, and I'm now at the level where I can teach anyone pretty much anything about the game

Are you doing jungle furion? Sidelane furion is counterproductive to the hero, middle is a lot of responsibility for a new player, and jungle isolates you and keeps you from learning important mechanics. Furion truly is a bad choice for learning dota. :p

Hey, I'm a Starcraft 2 player, never played DotA but wanna see how it is. Nice blog, seems like a fun and complex game.

Well I'd like a key for to put on my spare account so my brother and cousin can play, they would be considered noobs in the grand scheme of the competitive scene, but I'll leave the decision up to you.

The day I learned about the small things like never auto attacking but once per enemy creepy and to try to get two hits on your own creep (once at 50%, once to deny) the world just changes lol, the creep push because really important. Also if working in the long lane, pulling or double pulling creep waves is a great way to 1) set up potential ganks on enemy heroes that push too far and 2) get a bit of experience and gold farm for yourself while a carry role can get solo exp.

There are a lot more small things such as ward placement (Don't just throw it up on the cliff by rune, worst place to put it in my opinion, there are always better places, especially for the Radiant side.)

It's really tough to choose a winner. I should've come up with some creative contest for it, too many deserving people this way. T_T

To make me feel less guilty, I made a list of all the candidates, and RNG'd winner. And that winner is....
Gurrgeh!

Congrats to him! Hopefully he becomes pro at DotA so I can take the credit!

Hi, I got into Dota just as the hype-up for The International started since then ive been playing the dota copy mod Storm of the Imperial Sanctum on sc2 and like the feel and the type of gameplay and the community of flaming and raging, laughing and joking all in good fun. (its not that i dont like the sotis community its just after playing it for a few weeks i feel that Dota2 is calling me home to the mothership so to speak :D). And since then ive been trying to read up more on dota 1 to be prepared for dota2, i feel now as i been reading some guides (including yours ofc) that id very much like to get actual game experience and would therefore appriciate a beta-key greatly

great guide, nice and easy, keep it up!

edit: great tips from the rest of the crowd who keeps handing them out like halloweend candy, cheers.

Thanks tree.hugger for the beta key! I had a chance to install it last night and die to some bots. I took a look at the guide to antimage and played him for a few games to try and put some of the build/item suggestions to use and it was good fun. I felt like he was perhaps a little hard as a starting character because he needs to be last hitting like a boss but his blink was a very welcome button for helping me to not die.

After a few games I was able to farm up quite well and become a proper hard-carry and start slaughtering the enemy. I often found myself standing at a shop to buy something only to have it go into a stash somewhere else.. and certainly my courier usage was more counter-productive than helpful.. but I was very much learning. Not quite sure how ready I am to step into games with people but i'll give it a go sometime very soon.

actually it is ok to die in the early stages of the game sometimes.

Because the time wasted running back to heal and stuff and then getting back to battle is much longer than the respawn time. Ie, the exp/gold gain of the enemy hero(es) is lesser than your exp/gold loss from not being in the lane for X amount of time. This is really situational though and you should usually have healing items to prevent these situations.
