Very nice guide for people who haven't played a lot of DoTA, or those who played but are still not so great at it.

Awesome Guide Bumblebee, what a gentleman and a scholar. I think something that is underrated is really watching the minimap, as if it's Broodwar you're playing. Especially in pub games, you have to pay attention yourself not everyone always calls missing and its a good habit to get used to.

A pretty decent guide, maybe a bit too concise, but overall decent.

Loved the blog! I'm dying to get into DotA 2. I have friends who said they'd teach me how to play. =]

Oh my gawd, good to see all these guides showing up, obvious that it will help grow the scene ^.^
A game where the first thing you do is scout with a “worker”. Does that make any sense? Who scouts with a “worker”? That’s like sending out the janitor to perform recon, what general would do that? Retarded game.

I think positioning should be stressed from an early time. Positioning is what typically keeps a person from being okay to good, from good to great, and from great to pro, etc. It's like Macro in SC2, it should be a basic that is worked on from the very beginning so it will be a mechanical process in your head, you're always aware of your position, even when you're actually not aware of it. Too many times I've seen bad positioning throw away a lane, or even a game.

Yep. This actually can't be stressed enough, especially for new players who simply can't understand why they are being ganked and losing games, even when they are farming decently. Get it in your head that if you die, it is YOUR fault for being in the wrong place relative to your enemies' map presence.

Being constantly aware of not only your positioning, but the enemies - and the opportunities that presents - is a big part of what makes the difference between "decent" and having the potential to go pro.

Thanks for the guide. I never realized that you could double-pull as radiant. I played dota for along time and never knew that. The guide was short and sweet -- the best way to write a guide.

Haven't ever played DotA but I've played LoL. Thanks for this guide! Explains the differences between DotA and LoL to me more!
I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be outworked. You may be more talented than me. You might be smarter than me. And you may be better looking than me. But if we get on a treadmill together you are going to get off first or I’m going to

Nice read, though I'm only doing this for the key, I kinda feel bad.
I miss playing Dota with my friends, LoL and HoN are good but just... Not the same.

Thanks for the guide basics guides like this are useful to even veteran hon players as over the years S2 had made so many minor tweaks to the basics information like this makes me go "oh yah thats how it works in dota, I remmeber now"

Good easy read. The one thing I'm not thrilled about is going back to the 0 minute runes of DotA after the removal in HoN. That was an amazing change for pub games and, in my opinion, made the game more accessible to new players.

The first thing to learn is that playable characters are called heroes in DotA and not champions. Secondly, explaining what heroes go into certain lanes is challenging. The nuances of each hero make it difficult to categorize past support, carry, and jungler while those don't explain what lane they'll go in. You need to view the two full team lineups. Thirdly, it would be a lot of work to cover the "core item setup on every type of hero" because there are over a hundred heroes. You should look up each one individually rather than one gigantic guide.
