Not only I began to discover that Ultralisk is a fantastic unit but I've also played some interesting games, be it an insanely long ZvZ or a ZvP which could be put into textbooks - a rather uncommon thing to say about my games.

We'll have a look at all three Zerg matchups today, fasten your seatbelts and let's get going.

1. The Swarm vs. The Swarm - 41:33

My ZvZs are usually very short and I usually win. However this case was quite different. We spawned on close air positions @Shattered Temple and I made some mistakes in my field of expertise, ZvZ decision making before the 10th minute mark.

The game then got insane a bit - my opponent went for Mutas, I covered them; my opponent made Broodlords, I covered them too; I tried to counterattack and got repelled and so on. The game went on and on with both of us trying to expand and many funny situations like him having the main at 3 o'clock and me having the natural, both not knowing about it.

I think we used every unit Zerg has except the Ultralisk and even though in retrospect I think I should have won, games like these where you're way out of your usual routine are the very best to actually improve because when it happens next time, you'll remember such a remarkable game. Enjoy!

Well Played
  • covered Mutas & Broodlords
  • Creep Spread (for vision)
  • upgrades
  • general decision making

Mistakes
  • lousy micro at times
  • improper unit composition
  • should have made Ultralisks (at least a few)
  • poor map control
  • no ambushes or harass

2. Hello, Ultralisks!

This is one of the first games where I tried this magnificent unit and I have nothing but praise for it ever since. Terran and Protoss deathballs can go to hell - when these guys are tanking the damage from Tanks, Thors or Collossi, everything is going to be OK.

But to the game itself - a classic macro game where I've taken my third rather quickly and instead of pressing my economical advantage further, I tried to be nasty and attacked a bit - it's just that Lings alone aren't that good against Thors once their number exceeds the magical digit: 1.

My opponent was going for Mech and I greeted it with Ultralisks, Roaches and Zerglings. It was my inexperience with this style, as well as lack of proper upgrades that eventually lost me the game (I also left somewhat prematurely).

Well Played
  • initial macro
  • unit composition
  • Creep spread

Mistakes
  • pushed too hard for nothing
  • poor upgrades
  • bad surround
  • left too early

3. Textbook ZvP

I am particularly proud on this one. My opponent was crazy enough to actually try 3g FE on Xel'Naga Caverns, there's hardly a map where you would have a harder time defending it. I took my toll via my favorite pressure and killed quite a few Probes, but to the credit of my opponent he actually held and the game went on.

I took my third and was happily macroing while trying to be annoying at the same time and it all came to one major engagement near one of the Xel'Naga Towers. My army composition, a bit of a surround and Infestors who have gotten out just in time to add some Fungals to the fun were more than enough to seize this game.

Well Played

  • initial pressure
  • macro
  • unit composition

Mistakes
  • poor Creep spread
  • wasted a lot of units
  • low upgrades

I came here thinking that an SC2 player decided to try out BW.

Thanks for making my hopes crash'n burn.

Btw upgrades are important. It makes you win a lost game or the complete opposite. Fuck creep spread, fuck micro, fuck initial pressure, fuck anything. Upgrades are a part of macro, which means that they're on top priority. At least in my view.

I think chances of SC2 players testing out BW are far less probable than the other way around, although it's not unheard of (I think there's some thread here on TL of one guy guiding SC2 people through Brood War).

Regarding Upgrades - I don't know, I've been often neglecting them and still won with ease through unit composition, superior micro&macro etc. But I assume when I get to Masters, your statement will be more accurate.
