So there have been a lot of complaints about LoL taking the main stage in the IPL. Basically, IGN is hoping that by showing the game at its best between its best players, it can pique enough interest from the larger SC2 fanbase to try out LoL.
Did it work?

Honest answers please!
Personally, I thought it was pretty terrible that they decided to merge LoL and SC2 on the same channel. LoL looks completely baffling to the casual viewer. I cannot for the life of me see how someone can become interested in a game like that from just looking at it being played. But that's just my opinion.

I don't have a gaming rig to play LoL. But I answered no-indifferent.
|
I don't get why people have LoL and SC2 hate. LoL doesn't care about SC2 and we shouldn't care. We should be respectful cause they are still pros TT.
|
SC2 is completely baffling to the casual viewer as well as lol

I don't hate LoL, I just don't want to watch it during a Starcraft tournament just like I don't want to watch baseball in during March Madness. I think this whole eSports cross-over that we're seeing more and more often is just stupid.
More tournaments should be like MLG. They can have multiple games being played if they want to, but run them on separate streams with separate schedules ffs.

I agree to some degree. SC2 is a hugely complex game. In order to understand all of the nuances you'd have to play for at least several months.
LoL is far MORE baffling than Starcraft 2 though. You can tell a casual viewer "Competitive Starcraft 2 is a game where two players harvest resources to construct armies with the end goal of destroying the other player". The casual viewer should then easily be able to see this unfold, and by looking at the amount of red/blue on the minimap, be able to guess at who is winning.
For LoL, you can tell the viewer "the goal is for one team to destroy the other's main building", but the progression of the game is so roundabout that you have no idea what is going on. The hundreds abilities and items of the game are also completely unintelligible for a casual viewer, while in Starcraft a viewer can look at a tank, or a blinking stalker, and pick up very quickly on what each unit is capable of.

I like LoL, but I don't really care for it as an eSport. All the ARTS games are really hard to watch if you don't play them (actually the easiest to understand as a spectator that does not play is Dota2, but thats not out yet). Was a bad call to put it on the SC2 stream, it is kind of a bad call to support LoL as an eSport. Its got the fanbase to support one, but it doesn't take as much skill as any of its direct competitors in my opinion as someone who has played all of them.

I liked the finals. Allz I gotta say is LOL @ QTPie. I haven't laughed that long in a long time.
|
I play League of Legends but I honestly can't watch it. It's 1- 1.5 hours a match and it has maybe MAYBE 10-15 exciting moments. It's pretty dreadful to watch much more fun to play.
|
LoL is actually a lot more boring to watch than HoN or DOTA. Just the way it is set up doesn't lend to the games to be particularly exciting.

LoL sucks.
HoN / DotA >>>>>>>>>> LoL

I think your OP is kinda misinformed...LoL actually has a far larger player base than SC2 (its comparable to, and will probably exceed the WoW player base). What Riot is trying to do is increase LoL competitive exposure and give it "E-SPORTS" legitimacy. I'm not sure what the complaints are against, given that the two games are so dissimilar. IMO more competitive, potential e-sports type games can only be good for sc2 as it gives legitimacy to the entire progaming concept.

indifferent to it as an esport, but I enjoy playing it with friends...although to be honest I'd rather play Dota with them...
|
dota 2 should crush LoL once it comes out in the competitive scene. It's incredibly obvious to everyone, and everyone that plays LoL that dota 2 takes a lot more skill. Even if it does have a lot of casual fans the players just aren't as talented.
|
I played LoL/HoN/DotA, but it'll be difficult to have it as an esport simply because of the difficulty of having it as a spectator sport. It won't be as popular as something like SC2, simply because there are so many items and abilities you need to know beforehand to be able to enjoy it. Also, with 10 people running around the map, it's hard to keep track of all the action. MOBA games can be an esport, but it would simply be much more harder because of spectating difficulties.
|
all I have to say on this matter is that I am eagerly waiting for Dota 2 release.
|
I play it from time to time with friends but truthfully none of us think it's a very good spectator game. The IPL finals didn't really change that opinion.
|
I think that the casters made a mistake by continuing to cast the same way they had previously, ie assuming the audience all played the game. LoL is a game that you have to actually know something about in order to enjoy watching, so the lot of people who didn't know the game would obviously have gotten nothing from watching.
|
i think the difficulty in making LoL a credible esport is trying to balance the game between the constant 3 week new champion release cycle. also having a better (or dedicated) in game observer would probably help too, as often the observer for LoL misses a lot of action.
|
As long as it doesnt take anything away from sc2, I would be more than happen to see lol on the stage.
|
I don't think MOBA-type games lend themselves to broadcasting as well as say SC2. The games can often be ridiculously long and go for long periods w/o any action.
-I played Dota for 6-7 yrs hon from beta till release and same for LoL(perspective)
Edit: These games are often amazingly fun to play especially w/ friends on vent but can be difficult to watch even for fans of the game. I would compare it to some sports(basketball for me, can't watch that shit omfg its boring-love playing though).

Should have watched the devastation stream during the downtime of IPL
I don't mind it, but I would hate it being on stream if I had never played the game. To be honest, 90% of the sc2 related filler they had was annoying to me. I fell asleep at one point during a joke match. Boxer BW matches were awesome, though!

Yea, you don't hear entire crowds regularly clapping at key points in the game in starcraft 2, ever....ever.
....
Starcraft is infinitely more spectator/visual-friendly.

I introduced my girlfriend to watching competitive SC2 and she didn't understand the units / counters / strategies etc. but she still understood when key plays happened ("The shooting lasers just killed all the small guys! He must be winning after that." - Collossi killing marines) and enjoyed watching it. Now that she knows the game in general she likes it more.
As for LoL.... I just watched and it was a clusterfuck, even though I have an understanding of MOBA games (played HoN, DoTA). I was indifferent about LoL until I actually watched it, now I dislike it. The only real reason I can see it being treated so seriously as an e-sport must be the huge injection of cash by the production company.

doesn't really matter because LoL has a shitload of money in it and is slowly going to take over e-sports outside of korea. It will continue to be everywhere whether you like it or not.
P.S. the OP is so biased here that it is impossible to take this seriously.
starcraft 2 is definitely not easier to understand then LoL, I play both and they are equally boring and confusing to watch. Stop being homers.

Actually all the money Riot is pumping into trying to create an esports scene is what is probably going to kill competitive LoL eventually. The thing is that all of that money isn't coming from third party sponsors and the like the way it is with SC2, it's coming directly from the dev company itself. Even for a company as financially successful as Riot this is simply unsustainable, especially considering the amount of money that Riot's throwing at their pro scene. I could be wrong but I would be extremely surprised if they could maintain or grow the size of their prize pools for an extended period of time. Riot is throwing huge sums of money at the scene right away, historically we've seen that any reduction in the size of prize pools and things like that tend to have disastrous results on competitive scenes (Although, tbh, the prize money they're offering is significantly better than even CS or Warcraft 3 at their respective heights so they have that going for themselves at least).
Also I don't buy that LoL is taking over the esports scene nonsense. If that was the case you would see sponsors for teams and events starting to shift from other games. We haven't really seen that, there's still tons of money in the SC2 scene, the fighting game scene and in other MOBA games like HoN and now DOTA2. I would be somewhat surprised if in a year LoL's is still the primary competitive game in it's own genre much less dominating the entire esports scene.

lol Riot is basically throwing all of their money to create a real esport scene about their game but it's clearly not working well. They know that when Dota 2 is released it will overtake them in the Moba scene especially esport wise because Dota 2 has Valve backing them and they already have a more established scene then LoL ever will.
