Well i just started actually caring about using photoshop and its utilities that allow you to make awesome stuff, but i am really new to this, I wanted to know where can i start learning photoshop from, i know there are classes you can take in school which i will do in a couple of weeks, but how can you learn from home while your not at school? Please don't say Youtube because most of the stuff there are from previous versions and are all over the place / disorganized. I have made a couple of things so far, faily simple, im sure almost everyone can even do this in paint but still

If you are super serious you can go to sites like Lynda.com and get alot of good tutorials, but it costs money. Honestly, even though you said you don't want to, i think all you really need is youtube and just messing around yourself to learn it. Even if stuff on youtube is from previous versions it really doesnt matter at all. Adobe is notorious for basically not changing anything for the last 10 years in most of their programs...

You can learn a lot by doing random tutorials for signatures and banners and just effects in general. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with all of the tools and uses as well as find nice texts/brushes that you will want to use again in the future.

So I recommend you google "photoshop tutorials" or "photoshop cs5 tutorials" also if I recall correctly DeviantArt has sections dedicated to Photoshop Tutorials as well as Brushes, all good things to have. Another thing I recommend is joining a GFX site and participating and asking for help there. It's been awhile since I have done anything with graphics so I can't recommend any in specific, but a simple google will get you to one and if it looks good and polished, chances are the members will be very good.

What do you want to do? Get a goal and a specific question and we can help you.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Going to play devils advocate here, but unless you're touching up photographs, you won't find much use for Photoshop, at least where you ought not be using other programs. Your first two examples would have been better made in Illustrator (for vector graphic scalability and customization) or Indesign (for typography purposes.) The third one, well, I guess its kind of photoshop but I'd say you need to apply yourself a little more.

Most people only use Photoshop for touching up photos, to which they will then import to other programs. The only exception to this is Digital Painting, where photoshop simply provides the brush and canvas. If you're looking to progress in graphic design, I suggest you explore the other adobe programs before you get too attached. Too many people get stuck on using photoshop for what it's not meant for and pay the price. Once you learn Illustrator, it is shameful to use anything else for Logos, and the same for InDesign/typography.

It depends on your goals, though. I merely offer words without knowing your intents.

...That's a very broad subject to cover -.-....

Start googling tutorials. that is basically how you learn, even in college classes the majority of the time the teach will tell you to google it.

Graphic Design != only typography and Logos...

Photoshop is very useful for many things, including making banners, poster, web layouts, etc, in fact way better at it than Illustrator.

Also a lot of Art is done via photo shop and has stuff imported from Illustrator...

As much as i hate PS (I use After Effects instead of it for graphic stuff now mainly) its pretty essential for graphic design if you want the fullest options, though i agree the examples he showed could just be Illustrator. Illustrator is great for the vectors and type and such, but in most cases you cant get by without PS as the foundation.

Well aware of what graphic design is, my point is that what he's showed us really isn't photoshops job. I use photoshop for many things, web graphics included. I was simply tryingi to inform him of uses for other programs and not to limit yourself to photoshop only.

Logos you will need to get Adobe Illustrator CS5, as other stated nothing will compare to it, also vector graphics are the preferred format for logos, since they re size without pixelation.

For banner etc Photoshop is the general mainstay, again this is probably best done googling as there are thousands of different ways to make your banner looks. Retro, Sleek,etc..

However to get yourself started, the biggest thing to learn about is most likely Quick Mask and clipping mask, as well as the Pen tool. Those 3 things are some of the most used in a lot of graphics. Pen Tool = Life

For logos you will be forced to use Illustrator in any professional setting. Don't think you can take a shortcut on this. The reason for this is that illustrator creates vector graphics which can scale up and down with no distortion, and logos need to be able to fit on something as small as business cards or as large as billboards.

As Phtes has said, Pen Tool = Life. It is a foreign object when you first weild it, but it is a GDers most trusted tool.
