I've been banned before, and temp banned as well. First time was because I posted a comment in the "post a picture of you and your boyfriend/girlfriend" thread that a guy's fiancée looked like a dude. I believe my exact words were "Dude that's a dude" while quoting his post. That got me a perma ban. I appealed and eventually got my account back.
I see how that was wrong. And very mean. While I regret saying that. It did made me learn that TL wasn't no normal forum. Coming from Playdota.com where you have to be a little more extreme to be banned, Or get on the nerves of the moderators. I had become accustomed to a more lax and troll friendly posting style. Seeing as my humour can be quite "base" at times.
Lately I have been temp banned for posting Image Macros. I still feel image macros have their place. I like being able to sum up how I feel in a simple image macro. Thou I can see how it does dirty's up a forum and devolves the communication level of the members to that of the common 4chan poster.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now, what I'd like to know is What makes an Ideal TL.net poster? and maybe even get community feedback on my posting, to know what others think of my posting.
On to good posters. Now I've seen some excellent posters.
Like:
CaucasianAsian and his A Picture Says 1,000 Words thread comes to mind. It has spawned many fantastic heart wrenching/thought provoking/moving images. Really great thread that has improved TL for me. Since it has such emotional appeal.
Another is Coagulation and his Blue Creature Thread. Fantastic work done. Amazing creatures. And a awesome way to connect with other forums!
But then I also think, the "bad" posters make TL.net so beautiful. Why else would Grobyc The Automated Ban List thread be so popular? There is some joy in seeing the stupidity, trolling and "terrible-ness" of some posters.
TL I believe has found a good ground of strictness. That has fostered IMO one of the very best forums on the internet.
I'm curious to know what others think. Can you link me some fantastic posters and fantastic threads? I'll update this post.
Cheers all

Mods are pretty strict and I personally thing that's a downside to TL.
On the other hand at least you dont get banned for dropping the f bomb so I guess that's an improvement over some forums.
|
TL mods closed my thread about wiping my butt, I am still unhappy about it
|
I think its just not possible for everybody to become 'an ideal poster'. It should be mentioned though that lurker's are also somewhat ideal: they know their position and realize that they are not able to produce quality content and refrain from trolling/flaming.
|
If you abide by the rules, it's really not that hard to stay unbanned. Putting a little effort into your posts will keep you from being warned. Putting a lot of effort will probably make you an ideal poster.
|
Just like any situation in life, approach the board with intelligence and with a mannerism of treating others the way you would like to be treated.
I like that TL is moderated the way it is. It is the first forum I feel I've been able to get involved with. The range of content on this website is unbelievable, with some truly unique threads.
Try to post with your head not your heart. It's OK to disagree with someone but the way I see some people do it is just rude. If I feel I'm going to become like that, I just don't participate.
My take on this.

Check out some of SirJolt's blogs. They're fantastic.

They may be strict, but I often feel that they are policing the wrong issues, placing harmonious coexistence + Show Spoiler +(Jesus Christ, is there no proper term for "harmonisches Miteinander" in English? My vocab is failing me again) above intellectual rigor, which does of course make sense if you want to maintain popularity among a large community of people, but continuously angers me a lot, got me 2 temp bans, after which I took notice of this prioritization, and keeps it from being an even better forum for honest discussion. Unfortunately this is their house and you can't do much about it other than to learn the rules or to get lost, voluntarily or forcefully, take your pick.
That's how I see it.
Discouragement of overly short posts or image macros simply seems to be the compromise they felt most comfortable with, or the one which promised them the most utility.
That last line made me angry again. I can't stand people who put social peace before honesty. D:

look up my_digital_toss aka MDT
quite possibly the greatest poster ever to post on these fine forums
in general though, since the majority of us cannot be that awesome we are stuck with the necessity for wittiness, intelligence, kindness (not always applicable but generally good to have) as well as effort placed into each post (this one is really hard to do, and i try my best to do so however its not always possible for me :'( ) you should be a good poster if you just follow the rules though, they make a pretty good guideline for this

I think it's definitely better; if you look at any other forums there's often very little quality posts; it's just people using memes and etc.
That being said, once you contribute enough, you can post very low quality posts and the mods will be okay with it because you've already proven yourself to not be a retard. This is basically the treatment that experienced members get.
When people make joke posts and don't get banned for it, often times it's subtle humor, or humor that isn't like "stupid" jokes (unless you're baller).
That's why I think TL is awesome; the average post is of higher quality, the trolls have to be subtle and intelligent, and the mods have pronounced personalities.

I like chef's blogs, he's a good poster. If you haven't seen this blog I think its tl canon. This and obviously this. Oh and every rekrul blog starting from the beginning... Here this thread has a lot of classics

I like being able to sum up how I feel in a simple image macro. The problem is nobody cares how you feel if it can be summed up in a simple image macro. Think about what other posters want to read, and you will be an ok poster. It's not about expressing yourself, it's about writing something someone else might be interested in, or at least showing a vague attempt to do so. Nobody is entertained or intrigued by seeing a face palm macro for the millionth time.
|
the ideal posters posts tend to add something original/unsaid to each thread while maintaining respect for other posters and maintaining a unique personality/posting style
i mean simply following the rules doesn't make you a good poster
|
making image macros against the rules is the best decision tl staff ever made

how is vgl-cow not the number one response in this thread? Damnit TL.

I think it's just common sense. Like, if you are in the SFW pics thread, don't post NSFW pics, don't argue about God, don't be racist, etc.
|
I know that I make terrible posts and do nothing to contribute to the community here. I simply try to do my best to say rational things and not argue about senseless things like imbalance.
|
I just try to be as helpful as possible around the Zerg help me thread, simple questions simple answers, help threads in the strat section etc. As well as stay away from threads that may provoke me to post something flammable, such as the balance discussion thread. I'm glad it exists because it funnels all that balance whine somewhere else, but I'd never post in it because I'm willing to bet that no one who posts there actually cares about anyone else's opinion.
