Good evening teamliquid,
I am once again in dire help and your opinion for those artistically talented as well as those who may not necessarily have a trained eye.
Simply state, the first thing that looks funny about her face. And say if you think she's considered pretty/average/ugly
I've been trying to fix her face for a while now, and i'm not quite what it is thats bothering so much. After a lot of careful consideration, i figured that it might be her...
-lip orientation : not turned to the side enough? -chin orientation : maybe, grab the outside of her face, rotate to the left a bit, and move it to the right -eyes : i wanted them to look like their kind of open, no idea how to achieve this
Anyways, i need your opinions in this. Planning on finishing up the background this weekend and publishing it to my DA so final corrections would be great :D
edit: if you have a tablet, drawing red line corrections on top of the image would be greatly greatly appreciated <3
Edit the following morning: Thank you all for your time and your input. i read over all of your responses and tried doing a rough correction this morning before i left for work. Is this a bit better than before?
After looking at it flipped horizontally like some of you did i was in agreement that she looked like a neandertal. her jaw was coming out way too much, and she had a massive brow crest that we absolved 20,000 years ago. I brought the jaw line out a bit more, receded the neck, moved her left eye closer to the nose, followed the sketch suggestion and made her right eye concave (convex, in retrospect, was really a "why the hell did i do that" moment). Gave a little bump back her nose following alffla. i changed her upper lip a little bit too. is this a bit better now?

I thought you meant you wanted us to turn that D: into a :D lool
I cannot help you, but I agree that something looks sort of off...ish.
|
Try messing with: -Jaw line -How far out the neck is -How far the lips come out into the cheek -How close her left eye is to the bridge of her nose
|
hmm. my initial though to her is that the neck is too...thick? Possibly you need to trim back the front of her neck, which will make her chin slightly more prominent. The only other thing I can put my finger on is her left eye which seems to be misplaced too far from her nose a bit. Not an artist and don't have the best eye for this stuff so take it with a grain of salt!
^magus saw the same stuff as me so I think that means I'm not crazy ^.^ (or we both are...)

The shape of her neck seems a bit weird. You might also want to emphasize her jawline a bit more- it looks almost as if her face kind of just blends into her neck.
I think the face itself is okay- check the eyelid that's turned away from us... seems a bit big.
If that confused you I could try giving you a redline haha... not sure how much that would help.

The right eye(her right eye, that is) and the part of her forehead above it just seem to jut out and make her look slightly like a neanderthal if you look at that spot on her face. Other than that I can't really seem to be able to see much wrong with it aside from her jowl(the part of her neck right under her jaw) seems a little bit big/too far forward. But I'm not really sure on that last one, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. I also have little to no idea what I'm doing so please feel free to ignore me

In my opinion the problem is clearly with the left eye, which should be a lot closer to the nose top. It's defintely too far here (over an eye length !)

Well, your proportions of the face are right, so that's a good start. It seems to me that maybe the proportion of the head to the rest of her is a little off-- but that might be because she seems very thin rather than because her features are smushed together. (Her head seems a tiny bit large for the arm.)
Something that started bothering me right off is the neck. The way it comes up from her back combined with the turn of her head seems off. It seems that her head is too far forward in space compared to where her neck is. Part of this is because even though her chin should be closer to us than her ear, her head seems to be more parallel to me than receding. So right there it seems to me that some of that perspective is off in the turn of the head.
I try to figure out what seems wrong by holding up my hand to block out different portions of the work to see what seems right and when it starts to go wrong. As far as I can tell, the neck/spine connection seems a little funky, and either you need to push back the right side of her head so it recedes, or you need to change her features to be looking more towards him and less towards us. If you hold up your hand to cover first one side and then the other, you will see that your mind expects something other than what you have.
You said you couldn't figure out how to draw her eyes a bit opened. I like browsing the stock photo section on DA for references. Here is a picture of a girl with her eyes half closed. You will note that that the muscles under the eyes contract slightly and so the very bottom of the iris is covered. The lid drops down to right about midpoint at the pupil.
Edit: Yes, as others have pointed out, her eye seems a bit off compared to her nose. Feel your own face where your eye is, and you will notice the inner edge is directly at the base of the nose ridge, while yours appears to have some space between the base of the nose and the eye.
Also found this and this on dA, which are sort of similar poses that may help you as references.

The left eye is set deep in the face, the right eye is jutting out.

It does look a little off. Oftentimes when everything looks off, the slightest change could fix everything.
The eye on the left is too bulged out. Her nose and eyes are pointing at a 10 degree angle towards us, but her eyes are pointing like 15. Her face also looks to be wide.

I've never been good with drawing people but this clearly stood out to me.
I also really dislike the noses, though that is more preference. Way too straight.

Oh I found one more thing. See the part of her forehead that is connected to her nose? The lighting angle is a bit off, so it looks like something that's jutting out of her skull.
|
There is only one problem here: Eye alignment. The right eye is too high and out while the left eye is too far off the center. Fix that and profit. There are others but they can be ignored once you fix the eyes.

Sorry to ask this. Is this a guy?

as someone who isnt an artist, I want to say your art looks really good regardless =]

first thing that struck me was the right eyelid sticking out a bit too much.

The eyelid and the neck is what makes it seem, weird. The neck tells that she is turned the other way around the the body, and the eyelid seems like it's popped out almost. The right eye that is. Otherwise I would say it seems fine

i did it with a mouse, so its kinda fucked up still lol.
but i drew in a skull of what i thought ur head was positioned like
so i felt like it should look more like the left side one/ lol sorry i mirrored the pic backwards as well
i think in the original her far-side eye looks weird cuz her eyebrow is slanting upwards?

Fix the jutting out eye, make the neck thnner ffor sure
