Haha. It was very fun, and I loved your long answers. I did remove some thought words, such as "like" and "um", but I had permission to rewrite history, so it's fine.

I hope we have reason to do this again some day.

Great work at MLG <3

really awesome interview, and I agree with Day9's views on how SC2 Zerg should feel like, I miss Lurkers, Scourges and the swarm-like feel from BW as well

It was definitely a different kind of Zerg.

For me, Zerg had two fundemental identities in Brood War

One was space control. I could plant Lurkers here, and nothing could cross not only things that could out-range it but also detection. I had Scourge that could lock down air space, in a limited sense. I had Mutalisks that were fast, that made you feel very very very defensive. I had Overlords that once I got the speed upgrade I could cover the whole map. I could see everything you could do, and I could lock down air and ground and I could be very aggressive with harassment. So I had heavy space control. What do they do in StarCraft II? Well they make these slow mud units that though they're pretty good -- there are plenty of people who will win with roaches and baneling drops -- but my army is a blob! My army isn't supposed to be a blob! How do you control space? By having like 40 roaches. If you want to control space, you send them there!

In Brood War, the second characteristic was masses of units. Masses and masses, endless streams, the Zerg Swarm! But in StarCraft II Zerg has no 1 food units, except for a drone, but that's not a real unit! I guess you have an Overseer that's a 0 food unit, but still I want Zerg to just feel way different than it does feel. That's purely from my historical perspective, not from a balance perspective. I want something that feels really really Zergy.

i've been waiting for you to say this more specifically for a very long time, even though i know you said ti many times but in pieces, and yes Zerg does not feel zergy... ]=

it seems so strange that currently in sc2, zerg is the easiest race to re-macro an army and just launch hordes of units at people, yet day9 says they are not zergy with the swarm... mind blown

great interview!

Really like that Day went into greater detail on the argument he had with IdrA, especially because I agree with IdrA wholeheartedly (at least on the things from SotG #37).

The one thing I would like to add to the conversation is that there's a basic difference in the arguments.

Day9 is talking about strategies, which are constantly and forever in flux (PvZ is a great reflection of that). Hence the BW example. He's right that there can't really be any final conclusion about balance with respect to strategies, people are too creative and the game has too many options.

IdrA, however, is talking about tools. His point on SotG #37 was that Zerg didn't have the tools to scout or react appropriately to 1 base attacks, which invalidates all but the riskiest strategies. Which not far disconnected from a strategy discussion, it's still a point about in-game tools. These can certainly be balanced or imbalanced, just consider that warping-in psy storms was deemed an imbalanced ability.

So, essentially, Day's point is a fantastic one and is the reason you can't say '4gate is imbalanced' or '2rax is imbalanced' or 'spine rushes are imbalanced', but it doesn't actually speak to the point that IdrA was trying to make.

Day[9] is the man, awesome interview. And personally I agree with most everything that he said here, especially concerning balance.

Awesome interview!

Not that it makes sense for you to do this from a competitors standpoint, but I think I can speak for all zergs when I say we would love to watch you contribute to refining our race!

Great interview day9 is awesome :D

My only question is, with the part about blizzard adding / removing units... Was it actually confirmed that they were going to do that? I thought it was just confirmed that they were open to adding/changing/removing units in the next expansion, but didnt actually comment on what they were doing.

Like I said though, great interview I enjoyed reading it :DDD

It's located in that thread, in the Q&A section. Specifically, the blizzard rep (can't remember who) discusses units that are just kind of boring that may be removed, for instance the Overseer.

I honestly believe this is the situation in which the Spanishiwa would be most useful. It's one of the safest plays I've ever seen. IdrA mentioned the "all-purpose defense"? Well the Spanishiwa is as close as you'll ever get. The tools are there. They're just different than T/P tools.
